Watch Women Struggle To Use Vintage Period Belts

You'll never be more grateful for your tampons.

Before the momentous invention of the adhesive sanitary pad in the 1970s, women were stuck with the period belt -- a jock strap-looking nightmare that wrapped around a woman's waist and clipped a sanitary pad between her legs.

The ladies of BuzzFeed's new video series "Ladylike," had some fun testing the antiquated contraptions.

Not only do the period belts look ridiculous -- one woman referred to hers as a "a jock strap with a little tuft at the end" -- but they really could not have been very effective.

"Imagine being on the toilet, unfastening from the back, pulling it out, and just being like 'Hmm, let me grab another one of those,'" one woman said. Another woman described the whole process as "a lot of work."

While the women in the video wore the belts outside their clothes, they are obviously meant to be worn underneath. The thought of donning a belt while simultaneously dealing with Aunt Flo is truly terrifying, and the women who wore the belts had nothing but respect for our foremothers, who often didn't have another choice.
