Why the 'Bernie outperforms Hillary against Trump' Argument is the Wrong Argument

As Donald Trump has increased his support amongst Republican voters to over 80%, he has pulled into a statistical dead heat with Hillary Clinton in several national polls, including a WSJ/NBC poll.

Berniecrats are quick to point out that Bernie beats Trump by over 10 points in several polls and that's why he should be awarded the nomination in Philadelphia. But that's the wrong argument to make. It's almost the same fear mongering the DNC is using, 'nominate our candidate because if you don't, it's going to be your fault Donald got elected'. Don't let the DNC bring you down to their level. Just because the system is rigged doesn't mean you need to get in the gutter with them.

It's also the wrong argument to posit that people don't like Hillary, that she thinks the rules don't apply to her, that she's about to be indicted, that she's 5 points behind Trump in trustworthiness or that she's beholden to big moneyed interests.

The argument that should be made here is this; of the remaining three candidates, Bernie is the best choice for our future. The argument to be made here is that Bernie should be the nominee because that is the will of the people. Just look at this comparison in the enthusiasm of Bernie and Hillary supporters:

What do these two photos tell us about the will of the people? Just look at the excitement and joy in Bernie's crowd above. Now look at slumped shoulders of these people below, they don't even look like they want to be there. This photo taken May 23rd, 2016 in Detroit at the SEIU convention as she's using fear mongering to try to scare people into voting for her instead of Trump.

The media never gave Bernie any serious respect, and yet here he is. The DNC did everything they could to thwart his candidacy and yet here he is. There are reports that in almost every individual State Democratic primary, there were irregularities that seemed to unilaterally benefit Hillary and yet, here he is. Bernie is still here with a legitmate possibility of winning the nomination in spite of the fact that nobody gave him a fighting chance. This is truly astonishing.

Sure, Hillary may be up by 3 million votes, but how do you glean any meaningful information from that? Where would the vote tallies be had the press been fair and balanced? Where would the vote count be had the DNC not coronated Hillary 2 years ago? Where would the vote count be had all the voter suppression, purging of voters, long lines at polling stations and other suspected tampering not happened? The point is that we'll never know but it's not unreasonable to think that if this were actually a fair contest from the start, it might be Bernie who'd be up by 3 million votes right now.

This is a corrupted system and the results are somewhat undemocratic, not unlike ballot box stuffing for the MLB All-Star game in Baseball. That 3 million vote differential is meaningless and Hillary knows it, but she keeps repeating the narrative any chance she gets.

It's not unreasonable to think that had the press and the DNC been honest and unbiased that the result of the primaries would have been a resounding thumbs-up in favor of Sanders. But because the system is completely rigged, the actual will of the people is, for all intents and purposes, completely unknown.

Bernie wants money out of politics. He wants tuition free colleges. He wants tax reform so wealthy people and corporations pay their share. He wants a nationwide minimum wage of $15. He wants paid family leave and universal healthcare. He wants to end fracking and to implement a carbon tax so we can immediately begin to counteract climate change. He wants prison reform. He wants police forces across the country demilitarized. He wants to fix our broken $3T Healthcare system. He wants a political revolution and to bring millions of new voters into the election process. He wants Wasserman Schultz out of the DNC!! This is what the argument for his nomination should be about, not about how well he does against Trump.

That's what makes Bernie the best candidate for our future and why he should be the nominee. That's what democracy is supposed to be about; determining the will of the people to select the candidate they think is best for our future.

So what exactly do Trump and Hillary want (except not to lose)?
