Most of us probably have a routine when we go to the gym. We get comfortable with that routine and feel good about being able to stick to it. Unfortunately, that routine often leaves the gym’s rowing machine sitting in the corner all by itself. This really isn’t fair to the rowing machine, especially since it’s actually one of the more useful machines at the gym. Here are a few reasons why you should stop ignoring the rowing machine and make it part of your workout routine.

Great Aerobic Workout

You have a lot of options when it comes to getting an aerobic workout, and the rowing machine shouldn’t be overlooked as one of them. On most rowing machines, the resistance can be adjusted to help you reach your desired heart rate. You can then turn down the resistance so you can gradually slow down your pace and heart rate towards the end of your workout. If you’re tired of your current aerobics routine or don’t think it’s as efficient as it could be, the rowing machine may be worth a try.

Efficient Calorie Burner

The rowing machine is one of the most efficient ways to burn calories and lose weight. The average workout on a rowing machine burns 600 calories per hour, which is more than you would burn after an hour on a stationary bike or one of the other machines at your gym. With the efficiency of the rowing machine, you can actually spend less time at the gym without losing any of the benefits of being there.

Low Impact Workout

Compared to other options, rowing machines offer a low-impact workout. This can be beneficial for people who have joint problems or those who are battling weight issues and may not be able to jog or hike as a way to get in shape. Rowing is a natural motion for the body, so there’s no unnecessary stress put on the body. At the same time, it works out a variety of muscle groups, both in the lower and upper parts of the body, so it’s a good way to get started for someone who’s trying to ease into regular exercise with a low-impact workout.

Boosts Endurance

One reason many people shy away from the rowing machine or give up on it quickly after trying it out is because of how exhausting it can be. Of course, the machine is exhausting, but in the long run it helps to increase your endurance. If you keep using the rowing machine, your body will adapt to the rigors of using so many muscle groups at once and the fatigue you feel after your workout will slowly dissipate and be replaced with impressive amounts of stamina. Once you’ve built up that stamina, you’ll be amazed at what you can accomplish at the gym.

Minimizes Injury Risk

One of the best benefits of the rowing machine is that it reduces the chance of suffering an injury at the gym. It’s hard to fall off the machine, so there’s no risk there, and while your muscles may be screaming, the machine takes it easy on your joints. There’s some risk to your back, but as long as you maintain proper form, you should be fine and have a low risk of suffering an injury while using your gym’s rowing machine.
