Thunderclouds and princesses don’t typically go together, but that didn’t stop Royce Hutain from turning his daughter into “Princess Cumulus.”
The dad, who makes costumes for his daughter with LED lights, used spray adhesive to glue polyester fiber to a white blow-up suit for his 4-and-a-half-year-old, Zoey. He then programmed lightning effects to LED strips, which he added to the suit, to mimic lightning strikes. In true princess fashion, Zoey also wore a crown.
Hutain told The Huffington Post that the costume he made for Zoey last year inspired this year’s idea.
“Last year I came up with an El Niño-inspired costume since that was all the talk at that time. That costume was just a cloud on her head,” he said. “This year I wanted her to be the entire cloud.”
After checking that Zoey was cool with “being a giant cloud,” Hutain went to work. Zoey didn’t have a chance to see herself as Princess Cumulus until her dad showed her a video he had taken of her in the costume, which he has since posted on YouTube. In the video, she stuck her tongue out to make thunder sounds and couldn’t stop giggling.
“She was cracking up,” Hutain said. “She was really excited when I made her the light-up crown to top it off.”
Hutain, who shares his projects and sells costumes with LED lights on his site called Glowy Zoey, said he and his daughter “have so much fun” working on her costumes together. At the end of the video though, little Zoey does admit she’d like to be Wonder Woman for Halloween instead.
“She’s awesome,” she said.
We still think Princess Cumulus is pretty rad.
