The Most Important Treaty You've Never Heard of and How the NRA Wants It Dead

(568) Comments | Posted May 25, 2012 | 3:27 PM

There are currently no international laws or treaties regulating the international sale of conventional weapons. You read that right. There is more international oversight of the sale of bananas and iPods than grenade launchers and AK-47s. As a result, the bullets killing our troops in Afghanistan and the weapons used...

Why Our Blunt Narrative Doesn't Win

(92) Comments | Posted March 1, 2012 | 3:35 PM

Democrats and progressives need to change the way we're talking about the recent birth control brouhaha. By making this about women and contraception -- instead of couples being able to decide when to start a family -- we're focusing on the short-term policy goals instead of long-term political narratives, limiting...

How might the Sermon on the Mount have been different if Jesus was in the Tea Party? That is the question at the heart of a campaign launched yesterday (Jan. 17) by American Values Network that will culminate in the release of our first animated video...

We all know the age-old philosophical question: If a tree falls in the woods and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound? Here's an updated one: If a floundering and desperate politician tries to pick a fight but no one takes his bait, does it...

Why Super Committee Failure Is Good

(23) Comments | Posted October 27, 2011 | 2:13 PM

When I was in college, there was a saying everyone on my football team knew because our fullback repeated it any chance he got: "You can wish in one hand and [crap] in the other. See which hand fills up first." Democrats and progressives would be wise to heed the...

Rick Perry's Church-Giving Hypocrisy

(321) Comments | Posted September 23, 2011 | 8:00 AM

There has been a great deal of talk lately about Rick Perry's belief in God, much of it by Rick Perry.

But belief in God is not the same as following God. The Book of James illustrates that point with a message politicians (and many on the right) should...

Christian Right Says Ayn Rand Could Split GOP

(32) Comments | Posted July 8, 2011 | 10:53 AM

"For nearly a decade Democrats have sought a religious wedge issue that could separate big chunks of white evangelical voters from their Republican home. Now they've found it, and are thrusting at the Social Darwinist/Ayn Rand underbelly of American conservatism."

This is how Marvin Olasky -- icon of the...

(189) Comments | Posted June 13, 2011 | 5:45 PM

Perhaps the cold spell we're experiencing in DC originated from a realm much farther down beneath the earth that just froze over today. Glenn Beck just changed his mind on Ayn Rand! This was Beck back in June 2010: "Ayn Rand, you've got to love Ayn Rand. She's...

(1069) Comments | Posted May 27, 2011 | 12:25 PM

I recently wrote on why Democrats and progressives need to take some time studying Ayn Rand to fully understand the political significance of all the GOP leaders lining up to praise her. The GOP has a huge problem if their conservative religious base finds out what Rand really...

Ayn Rand's novel Atlas Shrugged has been among Amazon's top 20 bestsellers for much of the past year. This year she's outsold the Rev. Billy Graham, the Rev. Joel Osteen, and the Rev. Rick Warren's The Purpose Driven Life combined! There's even a new Atlas Shrugged movie playing in 300...

How to Shut Down the King Hearings

(6) Comments | Posted March 10, 2011 | 11:13 AM

The upcoming McCarthyesque hearings by Rep. King into whether American Muslims are anti-American have been met with cheers from racists/xenophobic elements within the Tea Party/GOP base and with cries of outrage from the left. There is value in the unified voice being lifted by progressives, faith leaders, and others of...

It's politics 101. If you don't spend time talking to a group of voters, engaging them, or showing them they matter, you tend to struggle with them on election day. And you struggle all the more when the group you ignore are faith and values voters because they make up...
