Obama Campaign Raises Money With Hemp Products While Administration Is Banning Farmers From Growing Hemp

Posted: 07/31/2012 4:14 pm

The 2012 election campaign is in full swing and President Obama's campaign is hard at work raising money to fund his reelection effort. The campaign even has an online store featuring a wide variety of items for sale. One of the items offered is a beautiful hemp and organic cotton scarf made by fashion designer Monique Péan.

The scarf is listed as "made in the USA." What the Obama store doesn't tell you is that the scarf is made from imported hemp blend fabric made in China. Unfortunately the Obama administration has confused non-drug industrial hemp with marijuana and blocked American farmers from growing the crop. This outrageous policy has forced American companies to import hemp textiles, auto parts, building materials, nutritious foods and more from overseas increasing our trade deficit and offshoring farming and manufacturing jobs.

The world's largest market for hemp products is the United States with retail sales estimated to be $419 million in 2010 and growing annually at around 10 percent. All of these hemp products must be imported from the dozens of countries that allow hemp farming. Chinese farmers are growing 150,000 acres of hemp and planning to expand to more than a million acres due to demand. Farmers in Canada report turning a solid profit on their hemp crops and are expanding their hemp acreage. European farmers are selling their hemp fiber for use by Ford, Daimler Chrysler and BMW for door panels and interior parts.

American farmers want to grow hemp too and 10 states have removed barriers to its production or research. The National Farmers Union has passed a resolution asking for a policy change. State governments have tried to work with the Obama administration to implement their state hemp farming laws but they refused to even meet. President Obama's drug czar recently rejected an industrial hemp petition signed by 28,000 supporters and justified the response by conflating hemp and marijuana.

How is it that President Obama can sell hemp in his campaign store but doesn't get that importing it from China makes no sense? Our founding fathers George Washington and Thomas Jefferson grew hemp on their farms and promoted its benefits. Banning hemp farming is sending jobs overseas and increasing our trade deficit. It's past time for some common sense policy on industrial hemp from President Obama.

Let's let President Obama know how we feel.

Never let it be said that our President lacks a deeply sardonic wit.

Hemp products are differant from Mexican weed ( majuana) although they appear identical , Majuarana plants are short & bushy ... American Hemp are tall like maïs and can be grown in tight rows . Hemp provides fiber for cloths , paper , interior finishings for automobiles , but do not produce the grains loaded with the chemicals used to get high like in the Mexican weed ...mixed pollinisation is possible but degrades the quality of the pot ...lol so bongers and investors take note !! §;-))

Plus, when children grow up and see others smoking pot and they do not freak out or do crazy things, then try it themselves, they realize they have been lied to in DARE. Then it leads to them wondering what else their government has lied to them about! Just saying...Obama admitted in his book to smoking regularly and "DOING A LITTLE BLOW"! Yet the laws and standards that the average American is held to,would guarantee NO COLLEGE EDUCATION,NO BEAUTIFUL WIFE AND NO JOB,MUCH LESS BECOMING THE PRESIDENT OF THE US. I can't stand this "caste" system. One set of laws for the average citizen and a differing more lenient set of laws for the Government people!

Also, note that a lot of the DARE kids were forced to take speed for their "ADD". Three million kids are prescribed ADD drugs, which the government classifies as dangerous, addictive drugs. Kids learn to spot hypocrisy at a very early age.

I'm voting for Gary Johnson because Obama is anti-cannabis and Romney only cares about Rmoney, not "our money".

Good question. Will people like you resist his wrongs, his atrocities, and his wrong headed policies? If so, then it may be best that he wins. With this President, you all sit back and praise his wrongs rather than resist them.

I run a US-based hemp skincare company and I am personally affected by hypocrisy such as this on a daily basis. Although hemp is a non-psychoactive durable and useful plant, the social stigma in this country against the plant prevents the dissemination of truthful information about hemp's benefits.

Hemp is biodegradable, sustainable, and grows naturally without pesticides. Hemp fiber is durable, long lasting and resits rot. Hemp seed oil is an anti-oxidant, reduces inflammation, hydrates, and heals skin. Hemp has been used as a healing agent, industrial fiber, and food for all of recorded history.
Hemp biofuel is sustainable, low-priced, and is not environmentally destructive. Biofuel production and subsequent use would be a closed-loop system and there would be no net increase in CO2 levels.
Unlike other plants that require pesticides which affect nitrogen fixation, hemp needs little-to-no pesticides and is essentially impact-neutral. Additionally, the extensive root system and plant material will loosen compact fields and provide additional nutrients to the soil.

It is BEYOND time for this travesty to end. We lifted the ban on hemp farming during WW2 ("Hemp For Victory") so we could make rope and other textiles to aide and save Allied lives, but because of extreme pressure from timber and cotton lobbies we can't develop this tremendous resource. That, and the fact that morons conflate hemp with cannabis and thus demonize a viable textile with no more a resource for smoking than a tree or cotton ball. Hemp's also much more earth-friendly than wood pulp and cotton (can be bleached with hydrogen peroxide vs. chlorine bleach), produces more yield per acre than trees and can have multiple growing seasons per year. But no, we're not going there. Let's continue to import what we could easily produce ourselves. Let's continue to pay farmers to NOT grow crops. Let's continue to throw common sense to the wind for fear of fear itself. SMH.

This is the first I've heard of this one but it is just crazy. Obama's administration is cracking down harder than ever before on marijuana for no reason at all considering 3 states will be legalizing it this year and our "war on drugs" is no more than a waste of taxpayer money. Now they are selling things made in other countries from hemp to get campaign money while keeping it illegal to actually grow or make these products in the US. That is just wrong. So many American jobs could be made and we would actually see things really made in America if this plant our President consumed mass amounts of in his youth were just made legal. Every argument they have against it has been proven wrong by science or other examples of contries that have done the same but Obama just refuses to acknowledge it all. And that is after making promises to stay out of states rights to sell medical and to have a real debate on the issue. Both promises he ignores and laughs about if someone asks.
03:59 PM on 08/01/2012
Make no mistake, there is no mistake. Psychoactive Cannabis is not the reason for prohibiting the plant. The rich white lumber/newspaper/petrochemical owning men that demonized this plant didn't want to compete with hemp after the decoritor was introduced to the US.

People should read about biodegradable hemp plastics and hemp biofuels. Make the farmers rich, not Koch industries!

It is just so hard to get people educated on the truth of this plant since the government tries so hard to keep it illegal. Hopefully things will change when the 3 states vote it legal once more this year.

As I always say: Hemp's not illegal because marijuana's a drug. Marijuana's illegal because hemp is an oil.

We all know Obama is a hypocrite. Not like this is a news story unless you are telling all the people who want hemp legal to go support, donate, and vote for Gary Johnson for President.
