Democratic Party Poll: Gallup Sees Rise In Unfavorable Rating

Posted: 08/29/2012 3:34 pm

Today's Gallup Poll, "GOP Favorability Matches 2008 Pre-Convention Level," shows the pre-convention favorability ratings of the two Parties going back as far as 1992. For the very first time, the favorable/unfavorable ratios are now higher for the Republican Party than for the Democratic Party. For the first time ever, the Democratic favorability ratio, which has always been within the range of 1.20 to 1.56, is now below 1. It is a stunningly low .83, which is 31% lower than the prior Democratic Party low of 1.20, which was reached in 2004.

By contrast, the Republican ratio is now .88, which compares with the 2008 ratio of .80, which was that Party's lowest-ever ratio, reached at the end of the Bush Presidency. Prior to 2008, the ratio was 1.16 in 2004, 1.41 in 2000, 1.16 in 1996, and 1.36 in 1992.

Those figures compare with the Democratic ratios of 1.38 in 2008 (compared with the Republican .80), 1.20 in 2004 (vs. 1.16), 1.56 in 2000 (vs. 1.41), 1.50 in 1996 (vs. 1.16), and 1.42 in 1992 (vs. 1.36).

Under President Obama, there has been an unprecedentedly sharp and first-ever switch to preferring the Republican Party over the Democratic Party.

In fact, the damage that has been done to the Democratic brand under the Obama Presidency, going from a historically normal Democratic ratio of 1.38 in 2008, down 39% to the present .83, compares with the Republican fall-offs under George W. Bush's Presidency, which declined from the Republican ratio of 1.41 in 2000, down 18% to 1.16 in 2004, and then down yet another 31% to .80 in 2008, when the Republican Party hit its all-time (back until 1992) pre-convention low - which virtually doomed the campaign of Presidential candidate John McCain and made Obama's win almost inevitable.

The Democratic brand has thus suffered more (down 39%) under Obama than the Republican brand suffered under either of George W. Bush's two terms (-16%, then -31%).

Though George W. Bush did major harm to the Republican brand, Barack Obama is out-doing him, hurting even steeper the Democratic brand, which historically (until now) has always been higher-valued than the Republican brand, not just in these pre-convention polls, but for decades in Party-allegiance.

The fact that Mitt Romney is now merely tied with Obama suggests that the American people are profoundly dissatisfied with him as a Presidential prospect, because his opponent is already extremely damaged goods.

The prospects for a Republican takeover of Congress would appear to be unprecedentedly high on the basis of the Republican favorability ratio now being higher than the Democratic, for the first time ever: .88/.83. The last time that the Parties were this close was in 2004, when the ratio was 1.16/1.20 - a 3% Democratic edge then, as compared to the 6% Republican edge now, which is a history-making reversal of the two Parties' brand-values: Republicans at last on top as the more-valued brand.

George W. Bush drove Americans away from conservatism, but Barack Obama is even more rapidly driving Americans away from liberalism.

If the favorability ratios of the two Parties are added together, the 2012 total (.88+.83) is an unprecedentedly low 1.71. Earlier totals were: 2.18 in 2008, 2.36 in 2004, 3.07 in 2000, 2.66 in 1996, and 2.78 in 1992. The current 1.71 total is 22% below the previous all-time low of 2.18, reached in 2008. What this shows is unprecedented alienation towards the government.

A different Gallup poll, which showed the ideological schizophrenia of the American electorate, was analyzed by me at businessinsider.com on August 27th, under the headline "Americans Think Policies That Are Good For The Country Would Be Bad For Themselves." It seeks to explain Americans' political disgust, and the causes of voters' post-1980 increasing alienation from government, starting with Ronald Reagan's First Inaugural Address saying, "Government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem." Barack Obama is climaxing Reagan's work. That essay also explains the current Gallup Poll's finding of a plunge in favorability-rating of the Democratic Party, because it shows why this country has been moving politically to the right. However, the sharpness of that rightward turn since the start of the Obama Presidency is unprecedented. America is entering new political territory.

FYI: The respondents in this poll were asked about how effective CONGRESS has been since 2008. Congressional numbers for both sides right now are at the LOWEST IN HISTORY (or at least since they began recording stats on this).

Also, I found no indication that respondents were contacted by cell phone, as well as by landline. Polling done solely through landlines skews heavily towards Republicans.

And finally, the article positing that the results of this poll are indicative of who will win the election is being framed by a very conservative writer whose past work has laid claim to the efficacy of Republican economy ideology.

Translation: Take it with a grain of salt, folks. We're on the right track so keep doing what you're doing. Volunteer, phone bank, donate, keep yourself informed about the issues and talk to your friends and neighbors.

It is amusing to see the excuses posted by the leftists in these comments. It must be hate, racism and conservative bias from Gallup!
Could it be that Americans oppose a $5 trillion dollar increase in the debt during Obama's 3.5 years in office which sells out our children and grandchildren? Perhaps opposition to Obama when the Justice Department sued Arizona for protecting their borders? Maybe forcing the largest entitlement program down the throat of Americans on a pure party line vote? The 8.3% unemployment after a failed stimulus program of $800 billion dollars which paid off labor unions for their blind allegiance?
I recommend that people listen to both sides of an issue before they make claims. Watch the speeches from Ann Romney and Chris Christie and determine if there is a shred of racism, hate, sexism or intolerance.

Obama has not done this. Those propagating hatred toward Obama have done this. It has been a full-time, four-year assault complete with a TV network and an insular hemisphere of he web to keep people on a constant drip of rage.

We are simply more divided as a people, now that the GOP has direct access to the fear centers of people's brains.

Google conservative brains and fear.

This is what I have been arguing. Utilizing hate and division will not work with people that jumped on the positive hope and change bus.
It can only work to move polls for short periods of time. It will alienate people over the long term. Without "hope" of a better future, people get depressed.
A campaign of "your life will suck more if you vote for THEM" does not have legs.

Obama chose what he wanted to do, and he did everything he wanted to do, except get his budget passed, and even his own party voted him down. But when Obama wanted to circumvent congress and pass his own version of Dream Act, he did it. When he wanted to shove Obamacare down our throats, he did it. When he wanted to cover up the Justice Department's role in Fast & Furious, he did it. When he wanted to pass that failed stimulus, he did it. When Obama wanted to repeal DADT, he did it. He seems very capable of doing what he wants to do. And when it is pointed out that he didn't address what mattered most, it all of a sudden becomes someone else's fault. He didn't cut the deficit in half. He increased it. He didn't fix the economy. He made it worse. He ostracized anyone who didn't share his politics, and blames them when he is the king of "my way or the highway." He calls for transparency and then cloaks himself in secrecy. The list goes on and on. I don't care what your bias tells you that the GOP will do. I care what Obama has and hasn't done. I concur with the findings. I know 1 person who hates GOP enough to vote for Obama, again, using the blame game. I know hundreds who will not vote for Obama, again.

"but Barack Obama is even more rapidly driving Americans away from liberalism."
How can that be when Obama has NEVER acted like a liberal? From the start, he's been a gutless moderate and practically a center-right moderate who's caved to the Right at every opportunity while being arrogantly dismissive towards what was assumed to be his base of progressives.
If there is a lesson learned is that Americans appreciate those politicians who are steadfast in what they believe, no matter how misguided or dishonest those politicians are.
Every since those opportunistic, "power at all costs" moderate dullards in Clinton's Democratic Leadership Council came about, the Democratic party no longer can be counted on as the party of the people but a smoke and mirrors party that purports to care, but is actually trying its best to be the Republican's tag-along little brother.

I've never agreed more with at post! Obama has beaten and abused his liberal base to the likes of which I have never seen before. He was a corporate plant that fooled us all. I can't believe he actually ran on "Hope" and "Change". It's ironic because he is the one politician who has stripped me of ALL hope for any change.

America needs a new party, one that appropriately limits government while providing a much more secure safety net than the unsustainable Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security regimes.

The .88 and .83 ratings show a significant reduction in the brand equity of BOTH parties, and appropriately so. Sadly, the nation is too steeped in the current paradigm to allow a 3rd party to rise nationally. Therefore, this new party would need to "prove itself" by governing and succeeding in a state.

No two states need such a party more than CA and IL.

"The Democratic brand has thus suffered more (down 39%) under Obama than the Republican brand suffered under either of George W. Bush's two terms (-16%, then -31%)."

Obama is toast. All of the Presidential polling is skewed to reflect the Democratic turnout numbers of 2008. This favor-ability poll suggests they just may not show up in the droves this November as they did then. Those on the fence, the .88 to .83 would suggest a slim margin, but a win by the GOP nonetheless.

Why? Even with those numbers and Romney's giant lead in cash, the Republican candidate is only either tied in the polls or down a few points.

The public did this during summer of 2008 too. The media walks them to the edge of rage falls, and then pushes them over the edge as they turn back around to supporting rationality.
