Patriarchy:1000, Hillary:0

digg Share this on Facebook Huffpost - stumble reddit del.ico.us RSS

Ever since I wrote an article in the Washington Post ten days ago, I've been getting love letters from women and super-smart men and brickbats from the Hillary-Haters. Unfortunately the Hillary-Haters are in charge. They monopolize the networks, the newspapers, the talk shows -- both radio and TV. They are crossing their legs for fear of castration. They are wearing the body armor our troops never got. Or got too late to matter. They are determined that a woman will not prove herself competent as Commander in Chief.

What's their ammunition? Oh, it's simple. They call her Mrs. Clinton, not Ms. or Senator. They pull out those nutcrackers in the shape of her supposed thighs. They complain about her ankles -- too thick. They complain on Fox TV that "White women are the problem" -- (idiot boy Kristol, the brain-damaged scion of Irving who rose through nepotism like our unelected "president"). Then they say she has "baggage" -- which could mean wrinkles, or her husband, or her daughter Chelsea whom they say she is "pimping." Then they say she never divorced Bill -- as if it's anyone's business. Then they moon over Obama's rhetorical style. Then they make it appear that she's a drone or a worker bee and has no royal jelly. Or else she has royal jelly and is queen bee. And that's her problem.

If Bill defends her, he's a pimp. If he doesn't, he's a creep. If Chelsea campaigns, it's cynical. If Obama trots out those cute little girls Michelle gave birth to, he's a family man. If Michelle attacks Hillary, it's news. If Hillary attacks Michelle -- well she can't because that would be racist. All we need now is a black woman in this race -- Maya or Oprah or Toni or Gayle or Donna -- any of whom would be a far better president than the one we've still got (not to mention his surrogate Dad, Dick Cheney, his co war-criminal). You couldn't attack Oprah or Maya or Toni or Gayle or Donna because of their color. Wow -- what an idea! Oprah for President. I'd definitely vote for that. I adore Maya Angelou as both person and poet. Toni Morrison is a genius and a true progressive. Gayle King is an executive, mother, communicator. Donna B. is a spokeswoman on CNN. Oprah -- well, she's Oprah -- way beyond having a last name.

Let me tell you about the Hillary-Haters who fill my inbox, they can't spell. They also believe in witchcraft. They believe HRC boils eye of newt with unborn baby's hair and little Jewish children not yet circumcised. They think she had a child with Vince Foster (even though Chelsea looks much like Bill and even his mother), then murdered him. They think she will leave Iraq, not leave Iraq, give us universal health care, not give us universal health care, sanction the killing of fetuses, not sanction the killing of fetuses, defend Israel, not defend Israel, end the Death Tax, not end the Death tax.

Honey, they are all mixed up. But they know they hate. And not just her -- but lots of people and things and ideas.

Ho hum. We've seen this all before in the United States of Amnesia (Gore Vidal's brilliant phrase). Remember Geraldine Ferraro -- tarred with the brush of her Italian-American husband, whom they claimed was a mafioso? Remember Bella Abzug, attacked for her hats (which covered too large a brain)? Remember Eleanor Roosevelt, attacked for her teeth? Remember Victoria Woodhull (the first woman to run for president) "hanged" as a whore? Remember Emma Goldman rode out of town on a rail -- for being Jewish, liking to dance and supporting the rights of the working classes?

Perhaps you know the history. Most likely you don't. They'd rather you didn't know it. Hence trillions for guns and pennies for education. The military industrial complex needs your boys and your girls in Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan. But there's no one to guard the "homeland" -- a nice Hitlerian locution. Perhaps they'd rather you didn't know that every great empire -- from Persia to Greece to Rome -- fell when it spent more on war than on its people. This is history, kids. But we don't read history any more. History begins with Britney and ends with Paris.

I give up. If I have to watch another great American woman thrown in the dustbin of history to please the patriarchy, I'll move to Canada -- where they live four years longer than we because they have universal health care. Or Italy -- where Berlusconi played at being Mussolini but life is sweet anyway and people take vacations in August and at Chanukah (Christmas or Diwali or Kwaanza) and Passover (Easter).

Ok folks, stick your heads in the sand like Maureen Dowd who thinks we're not against women but just against Clinton "baggage." Or Barbara Walters who seems to have forgotten how viciously she was attacked when she got her first million dollar contract -- worth only half a million in Euros today.

Or Oprah who forgets she wasn't always Oprah -- I knew her when she had two names. She was always really smart, but she used to identify with women. And now she's joined the Obamarama. I get it. I understand. People want their own color in the White House (pun intended). And nobody said Barack wasn't brilliant.

But the truth is, we have no idea what he stands for. At least I don't. All we have are soundbites and attacks on "the" Clintons. But I guess the great American Amnesiate prefers it that way. And they always get what they deserve in the White House. Last time it was Dubya -- the dumb son of the CIA who showed them by never heeding their warnings. We lost Al Gore to sound bites about his nerdiness. Then we lost him again to hanging chads in Florida. We lost Adlai for being too intellectual. They used to say "egghead" in the olden days. And we lost Kerry to touch screens in Ohio and to election officials later indicted and tried and convicted. I didn't like him anyway. I especially hated his not returning fire at the Swiftboaters, and that stupid salute at the Democratic convention where Barack was born from the head of Athena.

Flip Flop, Flop Flip. This is the nature of our political dialogue. Might as well vote Repugnican as Democratic -- though I never have in my whole life. They're all just pols who secretly pledge to ignore fifty three percent of the population. And guess what? The fifty three percent is resigned to it. We don't like it. We wish it were otherwise. But we adore our sons and grandsons and husbands and fathers and grandfathers -- not to mention our nephews whom we happily nepotize.

One of my nephews works for Hillary. I bet his heart is breaking too.

What's been proved here, 1,400 posts and counting later, is that honeyed words, well massaged, can turn the heads of a thousand posters from the Brittney and OJ blogs where they would otherwise be engaged.

This blog, opinion--not journalism--does nothing to advance Hillary's cause, or the cause of Feminism. It does not add to the civil discourse of a divisive and hotly contested race. Nor does it offer facts backed by journalistic standards, but rather, weak opinion backed by railing. As a good writer, Gertrude Stein, once remarked; "There is no there there." It screams out for a good editor to try and harness so many disparate notions into some kind of cohesive whole.

Jong writes, "But the truth is, we have no idea what he stands for. At least I don't." A thought that might encourage someone with at least a modicum of interest in fair play and accuracy to do just a little research. But no. We are subjected to only more opinion, which as the sage said, "Opinions are like rectums, everybody has one." Only most people don't flaunt theirs on the internet.

Some facts: Today more American service people will die in Iraq. Today more women will be used as the tools of war in Africa and raped and mutilated. Today the Bush Administration will continue its dismantling of our Constitution (abetted by Congress, including many Democrats) and looting of our economy, with the help of the Fed and Corporate Finance. And here's another fact: Some of our public servants won't be present to vote against these things, as they were not on Tuesday during the vote on telcom immunity and illegal spying!

pt 2
My hopes for president were eliminated by the MSM, so I have no dog in this hunt. What concerns me is the obvious misuse of a widely regarded talent; going from respected novelist to pitch-women for a political product and offering in her ad the same sort of psychographic sales babble you would find on the front of a box of soap.

The internet offers us freedom of speech--at least until the next session of Congress. And there are so many systemic horrors to be attacked, that affect All of us, and that threaten the existence of this Country. Drawing this tattered version of the cloak of feminism around a presidential candidate does both her and the voters a disservice; It makes her appear weak and in need of protecting, and it once more distracts us from the substance of her Candidacy. I learned nothing about Senator Clinton, but a great deal about her supporters.

For those hungry for issues and answers, I suggest Naomi Wolf's book, "The End of America," which will give you the critical information necessary to make a truly informed decision on who we believe would best lead us into our very uncertain future.

Let me ask you this:
If you object to Erica Jong, as a novelist, speaking out for her preferred candidate, do you object to Oprah, as a TV commentater, promoting her choice?
If you don't, then that smacks of hypocrisy on your part. Freedom of speech should apply to all, shouldn't it?

Barack knows lots about missing votes. The idea that you have the standing to critique Erica Jong, is ludicrous, with or without the gratuitous Gertrude Stein reference. This blog is all about opinion, but countering Jong's "opinion" with your own opinion isn't journalism, either. As to your "facts," you surely don't mean to suggest that Hillary Clinton supports any of the tragic consequences of the Bush administration. Come back to planet earth, Rule of Law.

First, and get this, I support neither candidate! Second as a mere poster I am not held to any journalistic standard--from a Blogger, and a celebrity of Jong's stature I believe we have the right to expect more--more rational thought, more coherence, and certainly more substance. My post is a critique, not a rebuttal of any of her statements, however lazy and flacid they may be.

And, most importantly, I Will Not debate Hillary's merit or demerit or relative ability vis a vis Obama or any other candidate. That is precisely the point of my posting in the first place, at all. This ridiculous exercise that almost 1,600 posts have engaged in, that only stoke the fires of more partisan warfare, is based on what? Jong's poorly constructed opinion regarding the tenuous link between feminism and Hillary's candidacy? Do you really believe that you are arguing "politics," or are you just being handled?

This sort of blogging is the internet's version of reality tv, and as long as there are people like you who take it seriously, to the exclusion of the events and issues that really threaten this country, I can sleep at night knowing that the fascist march to dominate us proceeds, while you all are duped and distracted once more into expending energy on non-issues, like this Blog.

I am amazed at how deaf these old "feminists" are.

I am African-American and female, and grew up at the tail-end of the so-called feminist movement, right around the time that these so-called progressive women decided to abandon the grassroots struggle and cuddle up to the K Street Lobbyists and politicians. The whole movement was all about the promotion of white middle-class women, and NOBODY else. That agenda seeps like snake venom out of every word written about this campaign from Ms. Jong and her uglier sister, Gloria Steinem.

What really happened - bam, every so-called progress that was made went straight down the toilet.

I am not supporting Hillary, I don't care who runs against her if she wins the nomination. I made this decision long before Obama was even mentioned as a candidate. She supported terrible policies and I don't believe in monarchies/dynasties. What nexy, Chelsea in '16?

her handling of the Paula Jones/Monica Lewisnky mess - she went straight to women like Ms. Jong and asked them not to criticize her lurid husband, to defend his actions as "vast right-wing conspiracy", putting the last nail in the coffin of the so-called American Feminist movement. She voted fot the war, and has voted for every war-funding measure. She has never admitted to her mistakes.

Also, I do not owe Hillary (or any white woman for that matter) a job. Now that's true feminism - i cant hink for myself, stand by my decisions.

BTW, if Hillary is elected, she will throw all of you "bleeding heart liberals" and "feminists" under the bus, as Billary did the gays with Don't Ask Don't Tell and blacks and the poor with the extension of draconian drug laws ann welfare reform. Oh, and I also want to know where were these "it's our turn now" crones when Carol Moseley Braun ran for president?

Good luck, suckers.

Great post Ali,

The true suckers of the democratic party are the sellouts that went along to get along. The ones who have no true faith in the convictions.

The ones who polished the turd of NAFTA, knowing full well the working men and women of this country couldnt compete will $1 dollar labor in china and mexico. Tell that to the textile mill workers in the carolinas to the auto worker in Michigan. You know the ones without a job. Now you ask working union democrats for Clintons vote again.

The chicken doves afraid of voting against the Iraq war resolution. That sold Iraq, a country with no weapons of mass destruction, no navy, no air force was somehow an immenent threat to the worlds only superpower. No I will go with Obama remembering the courage it took. To be against the war in 02-03 was a lonely place, it took conviction. Obama knew he was a Democrat, didnt go along with the neo-cons. He isnt the policy wonk Hillary is trying to spin her vote both ways and still cannot admit it was a mistake. More experience in Washington, no thanks.

The feminists that sold out, that looked the other way while Bill was "respecting" women and his wife, while engaged in trysts with Monica, Flowers, the beaty pageant queen, Jones, etc. The same feminists now that were all too quick then to label Bill as the victim and the women as the predators.

Obama democrats are true to this party ideals. We havent sold out to the Dick Morris strategy of triangulation. Were about growing the message we believe in to reach Independents and moderate Republicans.

Thank you, Erica, for your comments regarding the media. Is there anything to be done to mainstream and highly publicize the skewering of Hillary Clinton by the press? It is probably not obvious to many, unimportant to others. But it is critical to our democracy to let the voters decide this nomination, not the media. Al gore was "gored" by the media in 2000, we can all now only dream of what might have been had he been elected. I feel the same about Hillary Clinton. She is a very competent candidate, who with the help of a Democratic Congress, will accomplish great works for this country. Let's do everything possible in an effective way, to make the public aware of the media's objective to destroy Hillary Clinton's bid for the presidency.

I'm rather depressed that Senator Clinton has not been successful in showing how Senator Obama - with the corporate media on his side - has created a horribly successful black propaganda campaign against the Senator from New York. When she tried to counter his half truths and not truths - the media ruthlessly attacked her. As one person said the media will attack a woman, but dare not attack a black man. The corporate media, and the young and uninformed (or informed only by the Obama negative propaganda machine)are choosing our president, and are going to decide who will fight movement conservatism and lead us into a more sane future. My husband and I follow current affairs and politics closely and we are amazed at how ignorant voters seem to be. What a mess.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:33 AM on 02/15/2008

I am young, informed, and I voted for Obama. I don't think you should discount what the young people want. They are the ones who will have to clean up this mess. The earlier they get involved in politics, the better. I see what we got with 7/8 years of Bush. Should the voting be kept only to the mature and "informed"?

Great response, neepagirl!
To Anjisan: Do not call the people who are voting for Obama uninformed and ignorant unless you, yourself, have read his books. The first, "Dreams from My Father," was written long before he had any political aspirations. He was the first black president of the Harvard Law Review, and a publisher asked him to write a book, due to that notoriety. If you read that book and still dislike him, let me know. For the record, I am a white, middle-aged female.

I am more than happy that the young are getting involved - we needed the young vote so much in the last election, which was stolen from us. It dpoes sound like you have bought into the slogans that imply that Hillary is Bush/Cheney light -actually, she is the strong, smart woman who is best able to fight the right wing, and no-one is more qualified at this point. Do you know about the vast money machine of the right wing, the think tanks, the corporate media! For all of our sakes I hope that a Clinton/Obama ticket can be brokered that would give us democrats at least 16 years in the White House. Obama no doubt will be awesome with eight years of VP experience behind him. Neither candidate will get enough delegates to win, and don't forget that if Florida were counted Hillary would be ahead.
I agree with Paul Krugman in "The Conscience of a Liberal" says:
"The progressive agenda is clear and achievable, but it will face fierce opposition. The central fact of modern American political life is the control of the Republic Party by movement conservatives, who's vision of what America should be is completely antithetical to that of the progressive movement. Because of that control, the notion, beloved of polital pundits, that we can make progress through bipartisan consensus is simply foolish."

When you have turned more pages in the book of life - you will without a doubt realize the value of experience and age.

Can any Obama supporters tell me why Obama always shows off his "SPIRIT" ties with his father and stepfather who both left him when he was very young, yet talks about his mom and his grandparents on his mom's side very little? Even though it was his mom and his grandparents who raised him.

Isn't it obvious that the story about a black father and an Asian stepfather can gain much more points than a white female and her boring white old folks?!!! What kind of human nature for a "UINTER"!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:12 AM on 02/15/2008

Senator Obama's stepfather did not leave him; his mother left his stepfather. She had married him when Obama was about 6, and they moved to his home in Indonesia. He went to a Catholic school for a few years, and then a local, public school for a few. However, his mother wanted a better education for him, so she sent him back to Hawaii, to live with his grandparents. A few years after that, his mother divorced her husband.
He spends a great deal of time in both books talking about his white mother and his white grandparents. He dedicated his second book "The Audacity of Hope" to them both.

My opinion on this is that there is no way any one running for this office can be informative.
What we are hearing are airy fairy fluffy cloudy intentions.
It is not until a person sits in the chair of this office that the reality of the thickets pressing him/her? into the shape they will become hits home. The 'winner' of this chair has, for one, the Senate to cope with... not to mention the already established power factions... e.g. the Military for instance. I figure my vote for hope and intelligence is the next best thing to JFK.

Erica Jong certainly knows the Hillary-haters. Just read through some of these totally irrational rants, Bettysdad comes to mind instantly. The past 20 years, or the past 7 years, seem to have just bypassed some of the posters. But in the long run Obama isn't going to win the presidency. There won't be small caucuses and mobs of young people out there voting. Obama's lack of record, lack of experience, lack of substantive policies, will be grist for McCain's professionals.

As bad as it is for men to be attacking Hillary, women are their own worst enemy. Even my own sister said she reminds her of all the bitchy women bosses she ever had. Strength and brains in a woman is never looked upon too kindly. She has the answers but will never get the opportunity to state them because this is a media war and she is losing. If Barack gets the nomination, the media won it for him. Just today the Governor of Wisconsin was asked to name Barack's accomplishments and he really couldn't come up with anything of substance except the ethics reform bill which allows entertainment with lobbists only if one remains standing (very comprehensive) and the fact he has run a good campaign. How about some substance? I must applaud the black community that has stood by their candidate. That is alot more than the women of this nation who are too afraid to stand up and be counted. Imagine if the suffragettes acted then the way women are acting today, we wouldn't have to worry because we still wouldn't have the right to vote.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:16 AM on 02/15/2008

Don't forget that the great suffragette Elizabeth Cady Stanton had to suck it up as Blacks got the vote (technically) before women.
I believe America is ready for a woman president, and I will certainly vote for Hillary if she is nominated.
The problem is Barack has caught up and inspired millions of new and old voters to rally to a new vision of our world, much like RFK did for me in the sixties. It isn't about sex. Women heads of state are not new in this world and I don't believe that is why she is not winning (at the moment). Magaret Thatcher, Indira Gandih, Eva Peron, Golda Mier the list is not short. Women have been ruling since the beginning of time.
The Obama candidacy is like a tidal wave. If he can beat Hillary he certainly will have no trouble with Mccain.

You can't compare Emma Goldman or Eleanor Roosevelt with Hilary Clinton, or even Bella Abzug, that's the trouble. She isn't a great woman. Geraldine Ferraro, ok, she's on par with her. Nothing special about her, except she was a woman running for VP. I hate when they make fun of her legs or make-up too, but have you seen the cartoons of Obama? Not too kind. And Cuomo talking about shuckin and jivin. Saying he is an empty suit, just some preaching black guy? Be fair. They are both getting it. The problem for Hilary is that, besides being a woman and married to Bill Clinton, she has nothing to put her into a class of greatness. She doesn't stand for anything. She doesn't lead. Read Harriet Wright Edelman's comments about her and the Welfare Reform Act she so readily approved. Edelman calls it an "abomination." Eleanor really fought for the oppressed. She went into the coal mines. She had a personna apart from her husband. Hilary doesn't. Obama is a true phenomenon; someone that comes along once in several generations, someone you cannot ignore. Hilary is just another Geraldine Ferraro. She doesn't represent anyone but herself, she hasn't accomplished anything of substance in her time in elected office. She gave us NAFTA and Welfare Reform, which are responsible for the poverty and despair of more women since the Great Depression. Erica, the empress has no clothes.

You don;t think that is a distinct possibility? Well, we ran from South Vietnam and the North Vietnamese murdered about 1 million people. Do you remember the boat people?

We were wining in Vietnam. The NVA Tet Offensive was a disaster for them. Our press was a disaster for us, turning victory into defeat.

I won't vote for Hillary or Barak because neither of them talk about winning in Iraq (or Afghanistan), only about quitting, not caring what happens, not caring if Iran gets nukes, not caring about anything but more welfare and socialism.

Al Qaida had nothing to do with Iraq before we invaded Iraq.

Except for NOT being in the senate when the war stuff came up (so we REALLY do not know how he would have voted; when he became a senator he voted for all, all the funding, etc. that Senator Clinton did. Fact check this!

Uhhh, Obama's voted to continue war funding as well...when he showed up for any controversial votes, that is.

Clinton allies like the author need to be a bit less glum and a lot more serious.

The only thing you need to know about Obama is that his, ahem, questionable relationship to international organized crime figure Tony Rezko MAKES HIM UNELECTABLE, regardless of his facial pigmentation.

The Rezko dossier has already surfaced in the British press.

US Corporate Media are, for the moment, awaiting the convention or shortly thereafter to turn on their flavor-of-the-month Rock-Star Barry Obama.

Rezko goes on trial March 3 in Chicago–-prosecuted by the meticulous Patrick Fitzgerald.

A vote for Obama at this point–is really a vote for the independent candidacy of Mussolini Mike Bloomberg–or for a McCain-Bloomberg ticket with the sick old man from Arizona the junior partner.

Bloomberg is the new Cheney, only worse.

I hope Democrats can abandon their media-induced fantasies and handle the truth.

The Clintons were involved with Rezco too. Did you see the picture. Obama has not been accused of any wrong doing. He gave to charity the $150,000 Rezco donated to his state senate campaign. If you are looking for scandals, just look to the Clintons they have a whole closet full.

He gave to charity the money donated by a criminal, so that shows he's innocent? Do you remember those GOP crooks in congress gave the money they received from Tom DeLay?
Of course Obama doesn't need Rezco's money received during early his career. He has hundreds of millions in pocket now. Who cares it was Rezco's money that put him in today's position.

I felt this video did a very good job explaining why I greatly favor Obama over Hillary.

We will not have a change from the last seven years if we allow ourselves to be swept away in mania, i.e., I won't be drinking kool-aid for Obama and throw the country away. I will use my brain and stick with Senator Hillary Clinton.

Very, very smug aren't you. Why is it that the more highly educated demographic are overwhelmingly going for Obama? Do you think they are not as smart as you?

Are Democrats so used to voting against republicans regardless of their candidate's lack of charisma or likability that they see people supporting a smart, charismatic, and effective politician as mania? Do Clinton supporters really want to grow the democratic party or alienate what could be the new demographics to help solve problems in a progressive way?

As a Obama supporter do not assume you know my intelligence level, lack of wisdom, or loyalty to progressive causes. You do not know me or my fellow Obama supporters.

Well said. I had serious questions about Senator Clinton because of her record. However, I have been turned into an avid supporter because of the un-adulterated hate and misogyny thrown her way. I admire her strength in the face of over a decade of such treatment. The truth is that Bill Clinton has never been hated as much as "Hillary". As I have said before, in this race sexism has trumped racism.

It is not Obama that is throwing this mud, it is the media. Obama treats her with respect and dignity always.

You don't treat somebody with respect by calling her a Bush type Washington insider if that person has campaigned for you.

Which is why he said that "periodically" she battles depression and lashes out irrationally?

Sound familiar? It might be something someone has said to you about once a month from the time you were around 12 years old.

And his comment about her "claws" coming out?

Sounding familiar once again?

Please, women! Stop ignoring the fact that sexism is here and it's happening - regardless of which candidate you'd like to see in office.
