The Mary Poppins Syndrome
I always suspected the first woman to achieve high office in the United States would come from the right not the left. Like Margaret Thatcher, Sarah Palin calls up memories of tough nannies, nurses, governesses and mommies. This flank of Momism doesn't threaten like Hillary Clinton or Gloria Steinem. The populace loves Mommy squared.
There's a photo of Sarah Palin in a stars and stripes bikini, toting an automatic weapon. It says more than any Op-Ed or blog. Hot broad with cool weapon. Every school shooter's dream of womanhood. Alas, the photo is photoshopped, but true in spirit.
Liberal women might change our country from a teenage boy's dream to an adult republic of laws. Aw, no fair. If you think the real America means guns and motorcycles, snowmobiles and beauty contests, this pistol-packin' Momma's for you.
Irving Berlin was wrong: you can get a man with a gun.
Not that I think Sarah Palin will make it to VP. But given the repugnicans' habit of caging votes, it's certainly one horrid possibility.
White trash America certainly has allure for voters. Some people think rednecks are more American than Harvard educated intellectuals of mixed race. God help us in the next election. The NRA and the oil industry sure won't.

Erica, you and I are on the same side, but our side has a problem - it's no use fighting for the masses' rights if our spokespeople appear to have contempt for them. And that's exactly what's happening with Sarah Palin. Read your Max Weber - people's honour is often more important to them than their relationship to the means of production - and the Republicans are geniuses at appearing to respect the people their real power base wants to continue underpaying, underinsuring, using as cannon fodder, and generally exploiting. Perhaps one way we can begin to change this is to stop using words like "redneck" and showing the attitudes that go with such words in our communications.
I still believe that the first female president will come from the Democratic Party. We have a much deeper bench with demonstrably more talent. Independent women with conviction would never make it past the GOP primaries which are skewed silghtly to the right of King George the Third.
That will be Hillary Clinton; love her or not, she has earned our respect.
Clinton while some people might not have liked her is intelligent and has an encyclopedic knowledge of the facts and issues (health care etc...) that politicians have to deal with. I think that she has a deep and sincere desire to help all people, not just those that agree with her. Palin is a right-wing creationist, who wanted to have the library ban books.
The only thing that Palin has in common with Hillary is that both are women and both have children. The resemblance ends there.
Yes, it's the election thievery that bothers me the most. There are still 110,000 unopened ballots in Ohio. Where Bush supposedly "won". Rove's all over this. It's very disturbing.
What people fail to realize is that the same Oil Companys that support Stevens are the same ones who got Palin to wherre she is today.
The Oil Companys got their man/woman in charge of the state government they have the most problems with and have to pay the most for.
Joe Lieberman is going to stand behind John McCain and Sarah Palin during future press conferences to whisper the correct answers in their ears but Sarah Palin is younger and will be able to remember her briefings.
Watch for the "box" on McCain's back in the debates. We really need to screech if that's there this time!

Joe Lieberman has a 10 week shelf life of value for anyone after last night. NOBODY will ever be able to trust him again -- right or left. Nobody likes a traiter.
John McCain will use him until 11/4/08 -- and that day their fusion will end.
John McCain used to call the PRESS his "base." Now, he hates them because he cannot manipulate them any longer and they are asking tough questions, finally.
John McCain will toss ANYONE who is no longer useful. Joe Lieberman will be first when he finishes campaigning for a Cabinet position he will never get -- Secy of Defense or State.
