You Betcha She's Doggone Cute

digg Share this on Facebook Huffpost - stumble reddit del.ico.us RSS

Sarah Palin is a character out of Lewis Carroll. No one can translate that smile. She's the Cheshire Cat.

She says nothing and she grins triumphantly. Her smile lingers when the words have gone.

Nothing she says makes sense but the eyelashes never stop batting. Catch phrases and buzz words bounce in the air above her head. She adores the word "also." Also, she adores herself. She is so doggone cute she turns herself on.

She is the woman politician advertisers have been waiting for -- all style and no substance. Full of confidence and full of beans, the walk of feminism without the talk. Nobody can object because there's nothing to object to. Hillary Clinton and Geraldine Ferraro had ideas you could disagree with. But Sarah Palin is perky and inscrutable at once, you betcha. She talks. We listen but we have no idea what's been said.

She is the female candidate of GOP dreams. She talks, she smiles, she flirts, she never opposes. She makes mistakes but nobody seems to care. We watch her lips go up, go down, go sideways. We watch her eyes glisten behind rimless glasses. The beauty pageant promoters removed her soul so it wouldn't get in the way. How can we dismiss her or debate her? She's a bubble. She's fizz.

She is the perfection of beauty pageant womanhood. All image, no ideas. Camera-ready for hair and lipstick commercials. Her patriotism is of the Fourth of July variety. Let's eat a heck of a lot of hot dogs, pun intended.

She's pure as a sex-phone operator. You can fantasize but not touch. The bill comes later.

She reminds me of Paris Hilton -- who once tried to trademark the expression "That's hot." Will Palin trademark "You betcha"? Or "doggone"? Or "team of mavericks"? I wouldn't put it past her. Whatever happens with the "election" the endorsements will come flooding in. Maybelline will want her. And Kellogg's. And Wal-Mart. Some publisher must already have an offer on the table.

Sarah Palin has already won the Olympics of reality TV. She'll do just fine. As for the rest of us -- I'm not so sure.

Sarah Palin had nowhere to go but up. She was the one that was sexist and rude last night. She has a Barbie doll personality, but underneath all the folksy, cutesy stuff is someone dangerously ignorant, but very ambitious. Was I the only one that caught the reference she made about a constitutional change to give more power to the vice president, and she admired? Dick Chaney?? She is dangerous folks, because she believes she has been sent to this position by God. I have been around people like that.. She believes she is right and has the power to do what she see fit. She didn't even have a clue what Joe Biden was talking about when he was talking about the middle east. We are living in a dangerous world right now, on all sorts of levels, we do not need "Joe six pack" running the country. What an insult to the American people..Let's all give a "shout out" Were is Hilary Clinton, Condoleeza Rice, Kay Barnes, Kathleen Sebelius???, we need dignity back!!!!

She's already told us how she will govern. Remember her statement that she will only answers what she wants to answer? Palin is narcisstic. She thinks the world revolves around her and that she is truly special.

Thursday morning Pat Robertson, head of CBN and host of the 700 club prayed that God would support Sarah Palin in the V.P. debate. I've seldom agreed with Pat, but I would have sworn he was smarter than support someone so lacking in basic intellect as Palin. It makes me wonder how low Christians are willing to set the bar just to get a professed Christian, and certified witch hunter, elected.

"The mediocrity of everything in the great world of today is simply appalling. We live in intellectual slums." George Santayana, 6 Nov. 1934.

Santayana would be even more appalled were he here today

"Sarah Palin has already won the Olympics of reality TV. She'll do just fine"

And this six college attending, moose hunting, rape kit charging, Governor of a state the size of Memphis, anti-choice, winking, abstinence preaching, witchdoctor soliciting....former beauty pageant contestant turned REALITY STAR is about to become a millionaire. Selling a book on nothingness! Appearances on talk shows talking about nothingness!

This is just shameful!!

Everyone keeps calling her "folksy."

I'm from Iowa. That's pretty much the capitol of "Folksy". That being said, when I heard Sarah Palin and all of her little "folksy" sayings, I actually said out loud, "Who talks like that?"

I'm not sure who she was trying to appeal to with this strange vernacular, but it certainly didn't resonate with this "folksy" Midwesterner.

That would be folksy out of central casting, as portrayed in an MGM movie from the 1930s. It was fake then; it is fake now. (I grew up in the Midwest, and I know no one who talks like that, not even the folks I knew in small-town Nebraska 25 years ago.)

We wait 24 years to see another woman on the ticket and we get.....Palin.

I'm sickened by McCain, who insulted us all by putting her on the ticket. With her gollys, and hecks, and shucks, McCain THOUGHT men would vote for McPalin because they would just see how gosh darn cute she is, so would not be threatened by her or pay too much attention to what she actually says (or doesn't say) and women would vote for her, because, well, she's a woman. He insulted both genders, and put himself first and the country a very far second, in choosing someone so obviously ill-prepared and unqualified to serve as VP, much less, possibly the president.

Because he is intelligent and has a decent knowledge of every issue facing america. She had no ideas of the issues facing 'the lower 48'. He has the charisma to lead the nation and the attitude to get things done. He has served on multiple important committees in the senate. Including Ethics, homeland security, and foreign relations committees. He has visted and actually talked at length with foreign leaders and the rest of the world doesn't hate him.

Abraham Lincoln was a first time State Representative when he won the presidency. Greatest president we ever had. Experience doesn't matter nearly as much as a good message and intelligence.

You mean besides being a Harvard Law grad and a teacher of Constitutional Law and a state senator and a US Senator and the author of two books where he laid out his opinions on matters quite candidly? He has done countless interviews and press conferences on every network. He has demonstrated a grasp of the issues.

I do not understand why the Presidency is the only important job where its ok to be unintellectual and not curious. I can't be a neurosurgeon based on my ability to be relatable and cute, but Palin gets the ability to nuke other countries because she winked during the debate?

The dems introduced the sex-over-substance technique when JFK's appealing, but vapid, virile-man style was pitted against, and trumped, Nixon's substance in the first TV debate. Why complain when the repubs have borrowed, and perfected, the technique?

The dividing line in American politics is 1960, when Kennedy used his looks and "hale fellow well met' persona to great effect during the campaign and in the 1000 days that followed his inauguration.

The idea that we Democrats are immune from this, and that we would criticize a woman (but a man) for using it, is HIGHLY sexist. Were John Edwards a 5' 7", 200 pound, pot-bellied trial lawyer (made good) from North Carolina, he never would have been the Vice Presidential choice by our party. Obama has similarly benefited from his good looks and deep resonant voice. It is rather amazing, on this site, for thinking Democrats to be denying their own infatuation with looks - from Kennedy to Obama - but making fun of it when it happens to be a woman (who can't be taken seriously because she is attractive).

Her appeal (non-physical) is bound up with her ability to be glib, in her own folksy way. We all prefer someone who is more attractive, has a nicer sounding voice, and other features that have nothing to do with judgment or intellect. That Democrats - liberal Democrats - would not recognize this about themselves, and would use it as a basis to critique a woman, is quite offensive. Apparently we are in some sort of tangled set of emotions, self-denial and self-righteous about sexual equality.

Oh, and I know Ted Sorensen, Ted Sorensen is a friend of mine, and JFK was no Ted Sorensen.

Kennedy's self-awareness, and use, of his sex-appeal in the 1960 campaign has been well-documented. In this regard, Obama has taken a page from the Kennedy play book, but he has had to dial it back with the SNL lampooning earlier this year.

I could go on and on with the Edward's haircuts, etc., and don't even get me started on the embarrassing attempts to spruce up the candidate's spouses.

Palin's just following in a long tradition that dates back to Kennedy.

Sex sells--you betcha!

She is the female version of Peter Seller's Chance the Gardener character from 'Being There'.

Its both compelling and frightening to see people fill the vacuum she creates with her imponderable, ambiguous comments with whatever they most want to hear.

I pity the poor news interns tasked with preparing transcripts of the debate - just imagine trying to figure out how to punctuate it!
