Erica Wides
Erica Wides is the host and co-creator of "Let’s Get Real with Erica Wides™: The Cooking Show About Finding, Preparing and Eating Food" on the Heritage Radio Network.

Known for her sarcasm, wit, and matchless knowledge, Erica is a national authority on how to find, afford, cook, and eat real food.

Known as the “Jon Stewart of Food” she takes the snootiness out of the food conversation and explains how to tell real food from “Foodiness™,” which is the gray area between real food and junk food, but often is masquerading as "healthy" food. Foodiness is a term she coined in homage to Stephen Colbert’s “truthiness.”

On Let’s Get Real, Erica clears a realistic path for anyone to have access to real, minimally processed foods that are good for them—but with no chicken coop, kraut crock, bee-hive, or home-grown vegetables required.

She was also a featured speaker at TedX Berkeley in April 2013, has appeared as a guest expert on The Dr. Oz Show, PBS’s Stress Free Cooking, Martha Stewart Morning Living, the Food Network’s Chopped and Top Five, and has sold useless stuff on The Home Shopping Network. She's been a guest on NPR’s All Things Considered; and is a featured culinary expert for Erica also writes a twice-monthly column for Nutrisystem's NuMi, and contributes to Recipe Corner, and other media outlets.

Erica also works as a commercial actor and
voiceover artist.

Is It Food, or Is It Foodiness? Well, Let's Go Back to the Prairie, Yet Again, and Discuss It With Laura

Who do I love to talk about the most, other than myself? Just take a guess. Correct. Laura. As in, Laura Ingalls Wilder! Only my imaginary best friend in the whole world, and yes, I know she was a real person, but she also became my pretend BFF...

Is It Food, or Is It Foodiness? Well, What If Your Valentine Gave It to You?

Valentine's Day isn't a day to worry about sugar, because technically, it's one of the few days a year when you should be eating a big pile of sugar. Valentine's Day, Easter, Halloween. Not every day, as in, not in a big bowl of miniature fake french toast cereal at...

Down here in the Foodiness fallout shelter, we're very busy getting ready for the great American holiday devoted to overeating. We've got our turkey all picked out from the wild flock that just "wanders" onto the property right around this time every year, the cranberries have been harvested from the...

Sniff ... sniff ... what's that warm smell floating on the cooling October air? Is it one of the classic aromatic harbingers of fall? Wood smoke, gently decaying leaves, crisp fresh apples? No wait, it's spicier, sweeter, more evocative of something ... else. Something freshly baked, vaguely vegetal, not quite...

Is It Food, or Is It Foodiness? Let's Ask Platina, the 15th Century Vatican Librarian

(0) Comments | Posted September 18, 2014 | 2:25 PM

Who, you ask? You know, Platina! The guy who wrote what is considered the first cookbook...?

Oh come on, you don't know who Platina was? The Italian Renaissance humanist writer and gastronomist? Really? Where've you been?

Well, neither did I until I had to start teaching all...

Let's talk about non-butter butters. Since my last post was about non-milk milks and English as a flawed language, it seems a logical progression. Obviously I don't mean real, delicious, actual dairy butter made from cream, nor am I discussing unspeakably disgusting margarine and other non-dairy spreads which...

I've been with Adam, my husband, for 13 years. Well, we're not actually really married, per se, but I consider him my husband, and I refer to him as such. When you're an almost 50-year-old woman it sounds really stupid to use the word boyfriend, or for him to use...

Down here in the Foodiness Fallout Shelter, we really enjoy thrift. As an avowed thrift lover and general cheapskate, I'm always looking for free stuff to fill the shelter with. Free castoff furniture, free magazines from the recycling bin, and free food (in the wild) when I find it.

Greetings from the Foodiness fallout shelter, where we are spending the summer months, and where we work hard to help you see your way out of the Foodiness rabbit hole. It's easy to fall way down the rabbit hole to that deep, dark place where food manufacturers and marketers like...

Picture a 9-year-old girl in the suburbs of Long Island, short for her age, sporting brown aviator glasses on her round face, cute but overweight by 1970s standards, wearing homemade pants with a fake patched-denim print, that sit high over her little belly. She's idly riding her little Schwinn bicycle...

I've come to a major realization. Want to know what it is? OK. It is that after all this talking and reading and learning and figuring stuff out about food, and nutrition and health and everything, that it turns out that A. we still don't really know what we're supposed...

What is breakfast cereal? No, I'm asking you, you tell me. What's the first thing you think of when I ask you that question, the first mental image that comes up? For me, it's bowl of multicolored puffy sweet things, or a pile of mealy brown flakes, maybe with some...

The spring holidays have ended, the last bit of stale matzo has been choked down, and we Hebraic types can all go back to eating bread again, although I never stop eating bread at Passover. In fact, I probably ate MORE bread last week then I normally do any other...

There's Cheese... and then there's cheese, and then, if the cheese is in your snax, it's probably cheeze.

Cheeze isn't Cheese, or cheese. It's those cheeses' evil doppelganger. It's the devil's cheeze. El Queso del Diablo. Yikes! Scary. The devil runs the factory that makes all the processed, industrial,...

What's food? Well, I'd say anything edible that walked, swam, flew, or grew from the ground is food (except people, but I'll get to that shortly). Cook, bake, dehydrate, pickle, salt, can or smoke it? It's still food.

But if it walked, swam, flew or grew but...
