Yesterday I pleaded that Barack Obama might begin the process of framing, or labeling, his opponent in all the ways Republican candidates have successfully done to recent Democrats. Instead, he did more. His approach, to this point, was more subtle than what I suggested. But his speech was more masterful and encompassing than any suggestion I could have made. His passion, his eloquence, his substantiveness, and his compassion were all forcefully delivered. I still fear that vast swaths of society will be more moved by the negativity, churlishness, and character assassination that will continue to come from the other side. But if Barack Obama can become president of the United States in the way he proposes to do so, resisting the baser techniques of his rivals, he'll have done something truly incredible. Add that to his already extraordinary accomplishments in defying age-old limitations, and we could find ourselves in the presence of an even more historical figure than the mere facts already indicate. Bravo, Barack. I hope you bring it home. For all of us.
