I'll try to be brief. People should do whatever they choose. Get married, get divorced. Run for office, resign from office. Volunteer to clean up a highway, run screaming naked down the street. Have your fun, baby, and don't let no one keep you from it.
What people should not do is have their fun, all the while insisting they're doing it for someone else's benefit.
Deep within her rambling and disjointed "announcement" Friday morning, Sarah Palin stated that she's not going to seek reelection as Governor of Alaska. Then, she went on to say she'll be leaving office before her term is up because serving out the term she was elected to serve wouldn't be best for the people who voted her in. In other words, I'm leaving you -- but only because it's the best thing I can do for you.
It's easy to criticize, I know. But today I feel qualified. Because this is the identical excuse I gave to every girlfriend I broke up with in my twenties and thirties. I don't think many of them fell for it back then. I know they've all wised up since.
The question on my mind today is, how many of Sarah's millions of admirers will feel flattered by her most recent selfless and beneficent decision?
You can fool all of the people some of the time.
And you can fool some of the people all of the time.
And you can fool some of the people all of the time.
And you can fool some of the people all of the time...

What a political 2 weeks! Sanford of SC admits to an affair in a long, rambling press conference, goes on to confess in an ABC interview all sorts of behavior like a 13 year old, but wants to hang on to his governorship.
Palin hits a few bumps on the road & she's packing up and leaving.
Maybe they could trade places?
Just for a reference, Tom Pawlenty annouced a few weeks he wasn't going to run for reelection, but decided that as a "lame duck" governor there was still work to do. Good to know there are a few "normal" people left in the Republican Party.
Palin may appeal to her base, but everyone else is fed up with this drama queen.
Miss Sarah knows she can make oodles of money as a newscaster for Fox while continuing diatribe against the current White House administration. She wants Rush Limbaugh's job ! Better look out Rush, Sarah is a comin' and she's gonna take over conservative tv.
Good point!
Another article pointed out that:
"And, Cook noted, there is little political upside to being a governor during difficult economic times, when the options usually range from tax or fee increases to budget cuts.
“Bailing out early may avoid making some of those tough decisions,” said Cook.

SO, conservatives admit these are tough times to govern, because you must either raise taxes or cut spending or borrow to keep afloat -- and while they criticize Obama for this constantly, ,their own "governors" apparently can't even handle making the tough decisions, so they BAIL.
Failin' Palin Bailin'. Again. Also, too.
Rush LImbaugh has proven that if you can only fool 10% of the people all the time you can make a very comfortable living. Sarah will be joining the rest of the media lunatic fringe and make a very comfortable living without the legal worries and responsibilities of being Governor. Her lips will forever spout the conservative/neo-con lines for a fee. Thank the Lord I don't have to listen to her stick.
This is the really infuriating part of all this Palin bs. She's going to become a multi-millionaire celebrity with her own tv or radio show, and rake in the cash giving speeches to the far right robots.
While the rest of us struggle to keep afloat in this terrible economy, she'll be on easy street fighting against health care, the environment and any other policy designed to help the average person and the planet. This country has gone bat sh#t crazy.
There must be a psychological term to describe a person who can construct an alternate reality to justify any position, no matter how bizarre, then buy into it wholeheartedly, then have the ability to abandon THAT one for another another equally bizarre justification, when it is exposed or when she wants to change course without seeming to change course, all while claiming to be doing it in the best interests of someone else!
Wow, and I just constructed a rambling, run-on sentence worthy of soon-to-be-ex-Gov SP! Can I be a candidate for Prez too?
"There must be a psychological term to describe a person who can construct an alternate reality to justify any position, no matter how bizarre, then buy into it wholeheartedly, then have the ability to abandon THAT one for another another equally bizarre justification, when it is exposed or when she wants to change course without seeming to change course, all while claiming to be doing it in the best interests of someone else!"
There is. It's called 'my sister-in-law Kelly'
Errrr............ ." Don't get fooled again...."
Sarah Palin is the perfect match for what's left of the Republican base: ignorant and proud of it. Republicans with brains have fled the party to become Blue Dog Dems or Libertarians. The remainder is a laughing stock.
I enjoyed your article.
And while some of the people are fools all of the time, some of the time some people are always foolish: Governor Palin, yes, you are, you really, really are, you betcha also!
I loved that: essentially, I resign as governor because that's what's best for you-- in other words, I suck at it.
...and some poeple can fool themselves all of the time.
She's sparing the people of Alaska from her doing a bad job as a lame-duck governor. Instead of, for instance, just trying to do her best at the job she was elected to do. "I was just going to phone it in anyway, so I might as well just quit now."
Under her definition, isn't one a "lame duck" governor on about Day Six of your term?
And since she COULD have run for a second term, how is it that she's suddenly a "lame duck" only half way through her FIRST term???
Never mind: "Sarah Reasoning."
Well she was just awarded the ' Lame Duck Award ' from the Press Corps or newswriters.
She just took the award too literally. Gov... the Award is a Joke.. but then so are You!
Sarah is not a "lame duck" but more like a "blame duck"---always blaming someone else for her problems.
She wasn't obligated to do a bad job, either. I can't figure that one out.
Don't hurt yourself by trying to figure her out! LOL
Like Dubbya said, " . . . . . uh, won't be fooled again!"
Great post, and something to keep in mind that I heard on of the many analyses of Madam Governor's announcement. If there is bad news that has to be announced, it's best to do in on Friday, late in the day, when most "regular" media types are getting ready to disappear for the weekend. A holiday weekend is an even better time because it's 3 or 4 days of down time. It's the start of the July 4th weekend, and here we are dealing with this tidbit of news. Hmm!
I wonder who will be blamed first, Obama or Letterman?
Liberal media, pj clad bloggers, . . . . .
And the Alaska blogger Celtic Diva just sent and mailed in the $5000 check to get those emails she was ' hiding ' from everyone. I wonder what was in those emails. We'll soon find out.
I give up, I'm one of those pj wearing bloggers in the basement.
Don't blame me, I sleep in the nude.
No basement, either.
Well...let's see....Rush already blamed Obama for Gov Sanford so I guess it's Letterman's turn again.
You can be sure Rush Limbaugh will blame Obama. After all, he blamed Obama for Governor Sanford's meltdown, didn't he?
