Posted: 12/15/10 10:59 AM ET

Freedom to Marry spent 2010 ramping up and reinventing itself to be the national campaign the movement needs to get the job done. Working together in this campaign, we can make 2011, like 2010, another winning year for the freedom to marry.

10. President Obama moves in the right direction on the journey to marriage
1 of 12
At a October 27th meeting with progressive bloggers in October, President Obama signaled that he, like President Clinton before him, is making progress on his personal journey to supporting the freedom to marry. A question from AmericaBlog's Joe Sudbay prompted President Obama to talk about couples and say, "Attitudes evolve, including mine." (AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite)

Evan, how come you didn't include this news? Do you not think it is important? Or do you think it is important? Do you think there is a right to try to create humans with two fathers? Today? When?

Scientists breed mice with two fathers

A refined method could help gay men have children, researchers said.

Scientists have created mice with two fathers, suggesting that technology could one day be used to allow gay male couples the chance to have children with genes from both parents.

Researchers at the MD Anderson Cancer Centre in Texas used a series of steps to create the mice.

I wouldn't say I support gay marriage as much as I oppose laws preventing it. That's where the argument needs to be framed. Supporters aren't going to win by cursing out people who don't like the idea of gay marriage, they need to address the legal aspect.

Fanned and faved! And so many right wingers HATE that term because it reminds them that they are discriminating against fellow Americans. Good. Maybe some of them will grow a conscience.

That's fine Bishop... I wouldn't expect that everyone WOULD support this, nor do they need to.   But I do admire that you oppose laws preventing it.  It's a step in the right direction.

There are so many kids out there that need a family, need love, we should not deny them. I am a 58 yr old mother, wife of 38 yrs to a great guy, and grandma, I want kids to be in a loving family, it makes no difference whether it's from 2 moms, 2 dads, or one of each. Every person deserves to marry who they love, if you want to commit to another in marriage, I welcome all. Everyone take a deep breath, and keep your fingers crossed for the DADT repeal vote tomorrow, it's time.

Government should get out of the marriage business.

Maybe so, but it's unlikely to happen. And as long as they are in the business they need to treat everyone equally.

I've always wondered about the "Right to Marry". The First Amendment gives us the right to associate with who we choose and marriage is a specific association. So why do we even need the governments permission to marry? The government should treat everyone equally wether they are straight, gay, married, single, or living together. We should write our own contracts with our partner rather than a one size fits all marriage that has a 50% failure rate.
06:38 PM on 12/15/2010
So, you're saying that marriage, by its design, is the reason for the "50% failure rate"? Please connect the dots for me.
07:55 PM on 12/15/2010
The original, patriarchial "marriages" that the West modeled "marriage" after were property agreements where the women and all of their property became the property of men.

Those pressures still exist at the subconscious level. (for lack of a better phrase).
It's been a slow shedding of those types of beliefs.

Gender roles have changed as societies have changed.

The institution of marriage is will either evolve or die.

If it's not by design, then what's the reason? Are the millions of people in the US who get divorced are simply flawed? They're bad people? There's something wrong with them? Marriage doesn't work for them, and marriage is only the way it is because of the way it was designed. It's not up to others to connect the dots when there's really only one thing to blame.

If you don't want to marry, fine, then don't. But that doesn't mean that those who do shouldn't be able to.

Happy that despite all the roadblocks we made SOME progress this year.

I wish one of the issues we could have progressed on was the UAFA bill. I wish more of the GLBT community and our straight allies would talk about this. It seems to go almost unnoticed and yet the harm due to the lack of UAFA is tremendous. Our government makes you choose between your partner or your country. No one should ever be in that position.

The government should just get out of the marriage business altogether. There is no reason why we need marriages to be regulated by the state.

I don't really care if they are in the marriage business or not so long as they apply the rules fairly and not actively discriminate against GLBT tax paying American citizens.

The problem is that you have families and children to consider.
