I am having Sarah Palin nightmares. I dreamt last night that she was a member of a club where they rode snowmobiles and wore the claws of drowned and starved polar bears around their necks. I have a particular thing for Polar Bears. Maybe it's their snowy whiteness or their bigness or the fact that they live in the arctic or that I have never seen one in person or touched one. Maybe it is the fact that they live so comfortably on ice. Whatever it is, I need the polar bears.
I don't like raging at women. I am a Feminist and have spent my life trying to build community, help empower women and stop violence against them. It is hard to write about Sarah Palin. This is why the Sarah Palin choice was all the more insidious and cynical. The people who made this choice count on the goodness and solidarity of Feminists.
But everything Sarah Palin believes in and practices is antithetical to Feminism which for me is part of one story -- connected to saving the earth, ending racism, empowering women, giving young girls options, opening our minds, deepening tolerance, and ending violence and war.
I believe that the McCain/Palin ticket is one of the most dangerous choices of my lifetime, and should this country chose those candidates the fall-out may be so great, the destruction so vast in so many areas that America may never recover. But what is equally disturbing is the impact that duo would have on the rest of the world. Unfortunately, this is not a joke. In my lifetime I have seen the clownish, the inept, the bizarre be elected to the presidency with regularity.
Sarah Palin does not believe in evolution. I take this as a metaphor. In her world and the world of Fundamentalists nothing changes or gets better or evolves. She does not believe in global warming. The melting of the arctic, the storms that are destroying our cities, the pollution and rise of cancers, are all part of God's plan. She is fighting to take the polar bears off the endangered species list. The earth, in Palin's view, is here to be taken and plundered. The wolves and the bears are here to be shot and plundered. The oil is here to be taken and plundered. Iraq is here to be taken and plundered. As she said herself of the Iraqi war, "It was a task from God."
Sarah Palin does not believe in abortion. She does not believe women who are raped and incested and ripped open against their will should have a right to determine whether they have their rapist's baby or not.
She obviously does not believe in sex education or birth control. I imagine her daughter was practicing abstinence and we know how many babies that makes.
Sarah Palin does not much believe in thinking. From what I gather she has tried to ban books from the library, has a tendency to dispense with people who think independently. She cannot tolerate an environment of ambiguity and difference. This is a woman who could and might very well be the next president of the United States. She would govern one of the most diverse populations on the earth.
Sarah believes in guns. She has her own custom Austrian hunting rifle. She has been known to kill 40 caribou at a clip. She has shot hundreds of wolves from the air.
Sarah believes in God. That is of course her right, her private right. But when God and Guns come together in the public sector, when war is declared in God's name, when the rights of women are denied in his name, that is the end of separation of church and state and the undoing of everything America has ever tried to be.
I write to my sisters. I write because I believe we hold this election in our hands. This vote is a vote that will determine the future not just of the U.S., but of the planet. It will determine whether we create policies to save the earth or make it forever uninhabitable for humans. It will determine whether we move towards dialogue and diplomacy in the world or whether we escalate violence through invasion, undermining and attack. It will determine whether we go for oil, strip mining, coal burning or invest our money in alternatives that will free us from dependency and destruction. It will determine if money gets spent on education and healthcare or whether we build more and more methods of killing. It will determine whether America is a free open tolerant society or a closed place of fear, fundamentalism and aggression.
If the Polar Bears don't move you to go and do everything in your power to get Obama elected then consider the chant that filled the hall after Palin spoke at the RNC, "Drill Drill Drill." I think of teeth when I think of drills. I think of rape. I think of destruction. I think of domination. I think of military exercises that force mindless repetition, emptying the brain of analysis, doubt, ambiguity or dissent. I think of pain.
Do we want a future of drilling? More holes in the ozone, in the floor of the sea, more holes in our thinking, in the trust between nations and peoples, more holes in the fabric of this precious thing we call life?

So I should vote for Obama based on . . what? . . .polar bears?? He'll spend $50 billion of the tax money YOU pay to support impoverished nations. What about the impoverished in this nation? The ANWR drilling project is in an area that is quite small and will in no way affect wild life. Conceding that would mean that motor mouthes like Al Gore and Eve Ensler would not have some "issues" to rant about from their feeble soapbox. The spotlights would move on to someone else.
I don't get it. How can you fight for years for women's rights and then turn against someone who's living it? She's successful. She's a leader. The husband shares the weight of responsibility in the home. She makes the same money that the previous "man" in her position made. Wasn't "equal rights for women" the mantra that Feminists started with?
Obama has stated his intent to sit down and "talk" with Muslim leaders. What you don't understand is the very root of Islam is that they convert you or kill you. It's in the Quran. The potential for women's rights to be set back 200 years is what will be on the table if Obama is elected. If you really believed in feminism.... if you really understood what Islam teaches......if you could step back and look at the scenario without chanting the party line or spouting what someone else has said.....if you really used your brain..........you'd recognize Obama's the most destructive
Sarah Palin is not a role model for women's rights. She is a former beauty queen who believes in over-turning Roe V. Wade. How come the obvious struggle of abortion rights for women was over looked in "wlogariwpa's" rant? Where in that is Palin living the dream of women? If Roe V. Wade is overturned, then women should have full healthcare coverage and workpay throughout their pregnancies, especially if they are raped, as Mrs. Palin believes that raped women are not allowed to have an abortion. Also, America is not the be-all end-all and "only" country on this Earth. Obama sitting down and talking to Muslim leaders is important in maintaining relations with other countries. Especially because we are at war. Spoiled Americans make comments like this, who take their rights for granted. You think we are a country who doesn't have to maintain relationships with others? So, so selfish and an extremist if you believe that Obama is going to set women's right back 200 years and some sort of conspiracy theorist.. Have you read the Quran? Or the bible? Perhaps if you had, then maybe you'd stop generalizing your opinions and realize that Christianity, Judaism and Islam have the same origins. It's the evil of man that decides the evil he or she wants to do with any sort of religion to make it bad. Generalizing an entire nation of people is wrong and very un-American.
What don't you "conservatives" (who don't want to conserve anything except backwards views towards social issues) get? What's more important, wealth or planet? Will you be able to spend money, drive a car, whatever if you have no planet to do it on? No, you won't.
By far one of the most ill informed posts I've read. The Quran does not advocate killing in any way. Do you homework. Stop perverting a religion you don't understand. Wlogariwpa is exactly the subject the fear mongering Republican Party is trying to reach. People who swallow their piles of bs whole and never check their facts. Fighting for women's rights and being a successful woman are not mutually exclusive. Sarah Palin will set the feminist movement back 50 years with her abstinence only (that lesson worked wonders in her family), pro life, rape and pillage the earth's resources so I can drive my SUV and shoot things that can't shoot back mentality. The real disappointment is that Wlogariwpa can't even acknowledge their own willful ignorance. Your precious Bush spents trillions of dollars in a foreign country while watching our own flush down the toilet, and you're upset because Obama wants to spend $50 billion feeding other members of the human race? Come on!
I am so sick of Republicans erroneously repeating this notion that democrats will be worse for your pocketbook. The Republican regime you clearly support has just asked for $700 BILLION to companies that hand 50 million dollar bonuses to their CEOs while we go under. This regime has spent 600 BILLION dollars on Iraq. Where do you think that money is coming from? This regime has already reached into your CHILDREN's tax dollars. Look at statistics. More jobs have been created under EVERY democratic president than ANY of the republican presidents. Look at facts, not rhetoric, and then decide who is better for you pocketbook.
I am just asking you to look at the facts, and what has historically proven to work for this country. If you are concerned about the impoverished in this nation, as you state, then the democrats are a far better bet. McCain joined a filibuster to PREVENT a minimum wage hike last year. As you well know, minimum wage in this country is below the poverty line. McCain and the republicans also don't support social programs that help the poor. So between making it impossible for hardworking minimum wage earners to get out of poverty, and then cutting off any assistance to them, the facts show that they do not care about the poor. And if you vote for McCain, then the facts will show that neither do you, despite any of your rhetoric.
Wow, make sure you know for a fact who is and who isn't voting the Bailout Legislation in and what extensions had to be added to get Republican Senators on board. Get informed before you open your trap.
While I acknowledge that Ms. Ensler has done an incredible amount to help women throughout the world achieve the rights they deserve, her article here is out of line. Anyone who has been the victim of a rape would cringe to hear that she thinks of rape every time the word "drill" is uttered. Such a comment is thoughtless and compares a deep, personal tragedy with an issue of environmental health.
Sorry, but this a poorly written article. Why don't you just say Sarah is a man as well, I mean since facts aren't important to you.
In response, when I read your work i think...medication, medication.
Hey Marcie1234, maybe what the president needs is an informed, intelligent public. Wake up girl!
Eve Ensler wrote what was, in my opinion, a brilliant and impassioned article about Sarah Palin and her potential effects on women’s rights, the animal world, and the environment, [ “Drill, Drill,Drill”; http://www.huffingtonpost.com/eve-ensler/drill-drill-drill_b_124829 ]. As a man, I may not have experienced first-hand, the travails and indignities that women have gone through, but I think I can understand them a bit. One of the tragedies is that when women's participation in society is suppressed by the good ol' boys, we all lose. It is bullying and arrogance on a national scale. And, as Ms. Ensler implies, there is a connection between cruelty to women and cruelty to animals (or to the handicapped, or to ethnic minorities, for that matter ).
Anyone who would deny to women the Right to Choose in the face of rape & incest must not grasp the barbarity of such crimes , and is willing to inflict pain and suffering .Palin’s reasoning includes the sanctity of life, but she has no objections to blowing off the head of a moose, or shooting wolves with the lopsided aids of modern technology (helicopters and high-powered rifles) for no other reason than blood lust and sport—while on the other hand choosing to vitiate Women’s Right to Choose by claiming that life begins with fertilization.
What is coming out now is that Palin espouses a nepotistic, secretive, vindictive approach to governance. Great—another lesson learned from the Good Ol’ Boys!
Beautifully spoken, Parrotdoc. I see that your eloquent reply has brought out the reich-wing "monitors" (comments on article, above). We need more men like you who can explain to others how social justice for all benefits everyone (men included) as you have so eloquently done here. Sarah Palin is as anti-woman as any human being can be! Charging rape survivors for their rape kits at a very hefty price ($300-$1000, I understand)?!!!!! This then forced the state of Alaska to make it a state law that rape survivors could not be charged. And Wasilla was the ONLY town in Alaska doing that?!!! GEEZE, I'm sure that Sarah believes in the exploitation of women. She erroneously believes (as the fundamentalist churches teach) that putting women "in their place" equals putting them on a pedestal. I know. I was brought up that way too. Thankfully, I've read and studied myself out of that craziness.
As a supporter of SP, this allegation made me go on a hunt for evidence. I simply COULD NOT support a candidate that has such low regard for rape victims. (some people really are open-minded). This is what I found on this very site:
(The headline) "New Evidence: Palin Had Direct Role In Charging Rape Victims For Exams"
And then in his very OWN article he states (and i quote) "But clear evidence suggesting Palin knew Wasilla was charging the victims of sexual assault has been hard to find."
HUH? In other words, there is none to find but we'll just tell "our people" there is and they will run with it. Which is it? Is there 'evidence' that she had a 'direct role' or not? My God people! Making a claim like this just because you 'want it to be so' is vile and slanderous! Not to mention pathetic. Statements in this article are contradicting and I'm not amused.
Joe Biden is a great man. I'm sure Barack Obama is too. I might not agree with their policies, but I would NEVER stoop to being a part of such a disgusting smear tactic, simply because there is a (D) behind their names.
Keep digging for trash ... maybe you will find out about a tree in her yard she didn't water last week and you can all get together to give it a little hug. Another headliner for you, I'm sure.
What say you Mr. Jacob Alperin-Sheriff ???
Amen, and Amen, and Amen. What is amazing is how those who are against a woman's right to choose want to make that the sole issue in regards to the Governor.
I have a particular thing for babies. Maybe I am captivated by their innocence, or the thought of the great joy they were meant to bring to those who decided their life has worth. Maybe it’s that incredible scent or the beautiful, flawless softness of their skin. Perhaps it’s the tender movements of their fingers or the way they fit perfectly inside a mother’s arms. Maybe it’s the way they look into their mother’s eyes and say without a word … you are my everything. Whatever it is, I need children.
The last 6 words of this blog are the most telling of all. “This precious thing we call life”. Don’t get me wrong, I think that every creature is beautiful and I watch many of them with the same awe and amazement as many of you. But as a woman, and more importantly, as a human being, I am saddened that such credence is given to the survival of bears and whales and wolves and even trees, yet you are so ready to disregard and you are hesitant to fight for the sanctity and beauty of the innocent human life. If there is anyone to be scared of, it should be yourselves.
If this is an accurate paradigm of the “feminist” movement, no thank you, I will respectfully remain just a woman.
Beautifully put, AA.
Wolves, polar bears and caribou don't practice abortion, either, but care for and fiercely protect their offspring.
But seriously, these raging women who call themselves "feminists" ought to find another name for their warped views. How about "Irritants" or "Irrational-ists" "Sour Grapes" "Whacks" "Nasties"...anything but Feminists. Real Women of the world need to reclaim and reinstate this movement as it was meant: social, political, economic equality of the sexes. Men can't have abortions, therefore, this is not a subject for the feminist movement. It needs come from a place far, far from the political arena where rests a woman's conscience and soul...where she can wrestle with her religious/spiritual affiliations. GOVT. STAY AWAY...why do we make this such a huge political topic when we have energy crises and foreign policies and fiduciary nightmares to solve? What I plainly see is that if we want to promote socialism: vote Obama. If we want to reclaim our republic: vote McCain. Democracy is not the issue here: A Republic vs. A Socialist government.
I agree. Very beautifully put. Human lives are precious. Let us thank the republican administration for getting this country into a war about oil so we could meaninglessly lose more precious life. I have a great idea: let's all vote republican again and elect a man who's first instinct is to use military force when it comes to foreign relations. How many more lives will be lost? Lives of people already making a difference in this world. On the other hand, maybe we have too many people in this world and could use a good war. Drill, baby, drill...
I agree with most of your article especially from an opinion standpoint. I do wish, though, that you had better researched your facts. Although its an opinion article, there is a difference between just stating your opinion (say whatever you want about your personal thoughts) and referencing incorrect "facts" to support your opinion. What she has said/done is bad enough that stretching the truth is unnecessary - and although you may not have known what was true and what wasn't, it should your responsibility to research that.
It's the same mistake that Michael Moore made when he did his movie on Bush - there were enough bad things that Bush did, on public record, that all the truth stretching/manipulating he did was completely unnecessary, and even further, discredited those items that were true.
The people that believe unconditionally in McCain/Palin will not change their minds, so trying is pointless. Your target audience should be the undecided voters - and when you state inaccurate "facts" in the middle of actual facts, your entire message gets lost and you actually push the undecided voters the other way.
To BonnieMiller - you say it will not be possible to explain to the "creator" that a woman had an abortion because of inconvinience?
I say that woman should ask the creaotr why then she was raped. I think that woman should as the creator why her father got her pregnant, or why she is pregnant at 13.
You think he will have a good answer for her?
As a race, we are given "free will" to conduct ourselves in a manner which we choose. Because of this, some people do bad things. I can't answer for Him ... but I have my own ideas as to what He might say .... it might go something like this ....
You were the innocent victim of someone that inflicted brutal pain upon you, yet you did nothing to deserve it at all. You bled and hurt at the hands of someone that had only one purpose, and that was to fulfill their evil, selfish desires and lusts, with no regard to the affect it would have on you at all, because this is what they wanted to do.
You could have easily rid yourself of the constant reminder that would come as a result of this terrible event, but then you realized ... how different would this child be, than me?
Come On In ....
Yes, "free will"...something Palin would like to take away from women. Who is she to overrule God?
Polar bears vs. babies: Would like to suggest that every excuse, reason, "right's issue", sexism issue, etc will be stopped cold when we face our Creator in Heaven. There is absolutely NO WAY that we are going to be able to convince the Creator of the universe and everything in it, that a baby is a choice that we humans have a right to destroy because it is inconvenient. We aren't going to be able to argue that it isn't fair that women are the child bearers and that if men were the child bearers that they would be OK with abortions. We aren't going to be able to argue that because sin was perpetrated on us (rape, incest) that we have the right to commit further sin. When we face our Heavenly Father, we will be filled with absolute grief and regret at the choices that we all have made and then have rationalized, justified, or legalized. Therefore, anyone who believes that abortion is literally killing a life (and by the way, the viability argument is totally ridiculous......NO baby, either full term, 1 month old or six months old has the ability to sustain itself without human intervention. Whether that human intervention is occurring inside the womb or outside after a full term birth is irrelevant)....those people feel as if they have no choice than to defend that life or they too will have to face God with why they allowed those things to happen.
So if you believe so strongly that your creator will judge the actions of people, get the hell out of the way and let that God judge the person making the choice. It is not your choice. Let the creator do the judging and you just go an live your own life and leave people alone.
You cannot know God's words or intentions because you are a mere mortal.
How dare you assume that you are carrying out God's will. That is blasphemous. You have no idea what God's will is. The only thing God supposedly wrote were the tablets he gave to Moses. On those tablets was written "thou shalt not kill" -- god did not specify whom, it was a blanket statement. Don't kill. So if you believe in the tablets, then you must be against war -- all war. Turn the other cheek, love your enemy (as community-organizer Jesus once said). No death penalty -- only God should kill.
If you say you are God-fearing and/or a Christian, then you cannot be in favor of war -- not even a defensive war. You are supposed to not kill, to love your enemy, and turn the other cheek. You may be killed, but then God will judge the one who killed you. Or do you just pick and choose the parts of the bible that are most convenient to the way you want to live your life?
I suppose the same folks that believe its okay to murder babies are against the death penalty. When is murder not okay? And, when do you consider that "Free Will" is against the law (even Man's Law) and should be punished?
3. Thinking: Sarah Palin does not much believe in thinking. Typical liberal speak. Those who do not agree with them must be castigated as unthinking morons.
4. Feminism: The advocacy of women's rights on the grounds of political, social and economic equality to men. Feminism defined by Eve Ensler: Feminism which for me is part of one story -- connected to saving the earth, ending racism, empowering women, giving young girls options, opening our minds, deepening tolerance, and ending violence and war.
5. The Ozone Layer: The Russians are laughing all the way to the bank at our ignorance and stupid no drill energy policies. How does our drilling for oil erode our trust with other nations? Should we just continue to buy our oil from other nations, some of which are hostile to the interests of the United States? Holes in the sea floor ... is she kidding? They get filled with earth as soon as we pull the drill bit out. Holes in this precious thing we call life ... this emotional outburst does not even need addressing.
There is no evidence that burning oil causes holes in the ozone layer of the atmosphere. How does ozone depletion occur? Most scientific studies conclude...It is caused by the release of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), hydrofluorocarbons (HCFCs), and other ozone-depleting substances (ODS), which were used widely as refrigerants, insulating foams, and solvents.
What Eve Ensler refuses to understand is multi-fold. Where do I start?
1. Abortion: Pro-lifers view the life of the child, even if that child is conceived through rape or incest, as a being with rights - primarily the right to life. The fact that an alleged forceable "rape" occurred (less than 1% of all abortion cases), is irrelevant. Most abortions in America are performed as a means of birth control.
2. Global Warming and the Polar Bears: We do not have dilithium crystals (Star-Trek), and it will be decades if not longer before we will have viable alternative energy sources to be weaned off using gas and oil to power our cars. Global warming alarmists are so obsessed with their cause that they cannot admit the obvious truth: Far more people die each year from global cold, than they do from global heat.
If global warming is man-made, the results are likely temporary, as is air pollution. The earth atmosphere cleans itself through weather. If all the smoke caused by fires, nuclear explosions, bombs, gas and oil burning, cigarette/cigar smoking stayed in our atmosphere permanently, we all wouldn't be able to breath the air and we would be choking on it by now. Since the writer believes in change and evolution, my simple response to her hysteria is that she should calm down; that we humans and the polar bears will evolve and survive in the "uninhabitable" world in which we are creating.
So why are your knickers all tied in a not about 1% of abortion cases?
Dilithium crystals: how much oil do you think is in U.S. territory? how soon can it become gasoline? how long will it last? no one knows, but estimates are that there is very little oil available, that it will take up to 10 years to get in production, and that it may be exhausted within 50 years. So by chanting "drill, drill, drill" think about what you are really saying:
"Let's exhaust the entire oil supply of the U.S. and be done with it in 50 years. Let's leave no back-up plan for our children and grandchildren. Let's add more carbon to the earth's atmosphere at an accelerated rate. Damn the consequences, full speed ahead."
This country has had two rapid research/development/production programs in the last century: the Manhattan Project (nuclear bomb) and the Apollo Project (man on the moon). At their inceptions, they were risky, unknown, pie-in-the-sky. We need another Apollo project RIGHT NOW for alternative energy. And think of those consequences: immediate high-quality jobs in the U.S., and world leadership in a new era. If you are not for that, then you hate America and you hate the world (taking a page from the right-wing playbook).
I have a few things to say...
A) The author doesn't like "raging at women?" I thought the fact that Palin was a woman didn't matter? Aren't femenists smart enough to vote for someone based on things other than their gender? You shouldn't decide whether or not to "rage at" someone because of their gender. Is she saying that she doesn't rage at women because they can't handle it? Doesn't that go directly against the concept of equality?
B) Sarah Palin doesn't want to empower women? She wants to hold women down by becoming the second most powerful person in the Executive Branch of the US Government?
C) Are you saying that she also wants to perpetuate racism?
D) I love it. Sarah Palin wants to drill in Alaska. Therefore, Sarah Palin doesn't care about the environment? I love how these people think that drilling in Alaska will kill off every plant and animal in existence, and bring on the apocalypse.
E) The fall-out is going to be so vast and the destruction so great if McCain/Palin are elected? Can this author point to one specific example?
F) I would like to see the author's list of which Presidents are "clownish" and which were good Presidents. Let me guess; everyone with an (R) next to their name is inept. Everyone with a (D) by their name is a change-agent, and a savior.
Thank you for an incredibly eloquent post about all that is wrong about the Republican ticket, and, by clear and appropriate inference, all that is wrong in this country.
I do disagree on one point. I doubt that Ms. Palin's now pregnant daughter was practicing abstinence, as she has most likely not received any education about how to prevent pregnancy at all. Maybe she thought that you can't have a baby unless you're married ....
My best friend in high school (in 1984) begged me to take real thorough notes in Sex Ed class because all that her mother had said regarding sex and pregnancy was "If you wear a low-backed black dress, you will get pregnant" then her older sister not having a clue how she got pregnant because she never wore a low-backed black dress in her life! So, I took copious notes for her, already having learned about sex ed from my mother and her wisdom in providing a book "A Woman's Body - An Owners Manual"
My son received a copy of "A Man's Body - An Owner's Manual" for his 13th birthday, in case he felt that he couldn't come to me or his step-father with questions. So far, he's come to us for those questions, and we have answered honestly. At 17 now, he's only had one girlfriend and they have chosen to remain abstinent, because he knows the heavy life-changing responsibility that it would bring. Knowledge is power. Palin attempted to remove knowledge from the bookshelves of her hometown library in Alaska. What would she do to the nation's libraries if she were VP? You can't see how close to the edge of the cliff with blinders on. Removing access to knowledge, access to all potential choices and their repercussions is like wearing blinders.
Eve Ensler believes in saving wolves, bears and polar bears and not human lives?????? Something to think about...........My question?? Who do we want to save???? Then that's who you should vote for. Sarah Palin has the ***** to stand up for what she believes in. Go Sarah!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes I think of pain as well. Hmmmm... Palin minus the "L" is pain. She and McCain stand for destruction of all that we ought to hold dear in this country. They can't tolerate diversity of viewpoints because that takes intelligence. And diversity is one of the hallmarks of our country. These two want to force their black-and-white ideas on all of us when we who have tolerance know the world is always shades of gray. A leader has to be able to keep an open mind, be ready to consider alternative viewpoints, delve into complex situations not with dogma, impulsivity or stagnant ideology but with real solutions for real people who have real needs. If we choose the Palin/McCain ticket we are choosing intolerance and what kind of message does that send the world? What kind of legacy is that for our children? It takes a pretty bloodthirsty person to do some of the things she has done in Alaska... and do we honestly want more of that in the White House after these 8 years? Violence aside, McCain and Palin are and will be cultish, and if you don't think like they do you are out of luck. We know this going in, so if you vote McCain/Palin and they win, don't act surprised when they target a group that you belong to. You asked for it,
myself and 25 of my friends are NOT with you
Doesn't matter what thinkaboutitfirst thinks. My friends and I are with you,and we number more than 25! Well said megananne!
