A lapsed Philosophy major with an MFA in theatrical lighting design and 16 years experience in web design, UX consulting and creative management, Eve is either a quirky dinner party guest or a source of random knowledge. Or both.

As Creative Director at Beaconfire, a web design & development firm working solely with nonprofits, Eve brings pixel-driven leadership and an unyieldingly conceptual eye to every project. Along with her team of web superheroes, she has developed award-winning online experiences for organizations including Ad Council, The American Lung Association, Feeding America, Wildlife Conservation Society, AFL-CIO, and the American Museum of Natural History.

When not helping make the world a better place (one website at a time), Eve rocks South by Southwest Interactive as the creative muscle behind The Beacon Lounge and is a frequent speaker about design communication for nonprofits.

She also happens to wear an inordinate amount of black, completely without irony.

"Well, it's fare-thee-well, my dear, I'm bound to leave you."

Ethically, I must warn you that this post contains spoilers from "Oh Shendandoah", the 24th episode of HBO's series, The Newsroom.

Morally, I hope this post spoils much more than that.

After watching this episode...

Web designers and adrenaline junkies have a lot in common: we all live for the next big challenge. As designers, the stickier the creative problem, the more satisfaction we get from crafting a brilliant solution for it. Like a storm chaser, it's in our DNA to embrace chaos in order...

On Being Present: A Reflection for the New Year

I'm not religious, one of the "faithful" or even a little bit traditional. Yet at this time of year, I find myself looking for deeper meaning in life largely because the religion I was born into commands it.

I can't tell you how much that sort of Pavlovian spirituality usually...

We Have Found the Enemy

I swore I would never write about politics. It's like one of those creepy wormholes with a toothy venus-flytrappy monster waiting at the end to rip you to shreds. Scares the shit out of me. And pisses me off.

But people out there really suck these days, and I...

In Defense of Smart

(22) Comments | Posted June 26, 2012 | 2:17 PM

After watching the pilot of Aaron Sorkin's new HBO drama The Newsroom, I'm not at all surprised that people have been beating on it like some alien weed they're hell bent on destroying.

The show is just too smart. Smart as a pejorative*. And that scares the shit out...

Art Imitating Life Imitating Nothing

I really really REALLY wanted to like Smash.

How could I not? My creative start was as a theatrical lighting designer, so anything that suggests "backstage" makes me as goofy as a 4-year-old with a brand new Tickle Me Elmo. I even giggle sometimes. It's pretty embarrassing.

So let...

Be a Creative Superhero. Save the World.

I have a confession to make. I'm a total pain in the ass. Like, professionally. As a creative director, being opinionated, tenacious, demanding, eccentric & snarky comes with the job.

Or could it be a cover for my super secret identity?

Yes, it's true. Beneath this black turtleneck beats the...
