True/False Film Festival 2012

Posted: 03/29/2012 10:03 pm

Although the True/False Film Festival, dedicated to documentary in the most creative and contentious sense of the word, is now in its ninth year and enjoying its highest attendance ever, to the first-time visitor it feels like a wonderful just-discovered secret. Below are 10 of my most exciting discoveries at and around the 2012 True/False Film Festival and its lovely little host town of Columbia Mo., intended as an enticement to readers to attend next year.

The festival’s focus on providing programming for local documentary lovers rather than courting industry liberates it from the complicated national jockeying for premiere status. They’re happy to show films that have already premiered right alongside films that are about to premiere elsewhere. Other, larger festivals allow True/False to screen films they’re set to premiere, provided there are no announcements or publicity (including in this article, unfortunately), giving T/F audiences delicious sneak peeks of films without ruining spoiling a larger premiere at a fest that cares about that sort of thing.
