"Mexico: Numbers Put Safety Issues In Perspective: Officials". For Mexican tourism officials, the perception that their country is unsafe just doesn’t add up. Twenty-two passengers on Carnival's Splendor, on their way back from the pueblo of El Nogalito, in Mexico, were stopped as their bus was returning to the ship. Gunmen took electronics, jewelry and money, the Los Angeles Times reported Sunday. No one was injured. In a statement, Rodolfo Lopez-Negrete, chief operating officer of the Mexico Tourism Board, called the robbery "a rare and isolated incident," adding, "While 22 people were in involved in this incident, in all of 2011, 22 million (22.7 million to be precise) international tourists visited Mexico, in addition to the many millions who arrived by cruise line. The vast majority of these visitors enjoyed their stay in Mexico without any incident.” In a similar vein, Secretary of Tourism Gloria Guevara said in an interview last week that Mexico's drug-related problems are limited to about 80 municipios, which she likened to counties, out of about 2,500. (The U.S., by comparison, has about 3,140 counties.) The U.S. StateDepartment on February 8 renewed its warning about travel to Mexico, adding four states to the previous roster of 10 that it says have areas that are unsafe. The beginning of the warning said, "Millions of U.S. citizens safely visit Mexico each year for study, tourism, and business, including more than 150,000 who cross the border every day.”

When would you have time for romance between protecting your valuables, dodging bullets, keeping an eye out for kidnappers, and who is carrying a machette. Romance is alive and well in the U.S.A. and you don't have to worry about 8 heads in a duffel bag.

Mexico?! Are you kidding? Oh sure, we're all going to head down to a place where there are headless corpses showing up everyday. And don't tell me people are safe if they stay with in the restricted areas. They're not.

So, ah, on a website that continuously attacks the 1%, why do we have an article on fancy hotels in Mexico here?

Stupid................the pictures shown do not show the hotels in the blurbs, they show flowers, water,
beach. If your going to brag about romantic hotels then damit, show the hotels.

I notice your choosing Punta Mita as a romantic spot didn't mention the corruption, violence, resettlements and bulldozing that took place in order for this lovely hotel to be built.

Why would HP even post this article, especially with the U.S. just posting a heightened advisory warning against travel to Mexico. What does HP gain by encouraging Americans to travel to Mexico at this time?

Having traveled numerous times and lived in Mexico during the past five years, I can tell you that the US Dept of State warnings shouldn't be taken as blanket statements to stay away from the country. The latest warning actually better defined the areas of caution precisely because the earlier warning of a year ago was too broad and confusing to Americans.

Most of the areas featured in the photo essay are safe and haven't had any problems whatsoever. I lived in Colima and traveled in many of the other areas and recommend to many friends that they do the same. All have loved it and come back realizing how safe, lovely and inexpensive travels to Mexico can be. Just do your homework first.

Street crime in Mexico is a serious problem throughout all of the major cities, including in the tourist resort areas. Furthermore, there is danger in traveling to these areas too if you travel by vehicle.

You make valid points, however, clearly there are problems since you state "most of the areas featured are safe". When there are so many romantic destinations that are subject to far fewer problems, why chance the possibility that your homework included a wrong answer.

Cruise ships don't even stop at Acapulco or Ixtapa/Zhuatenejo any more. Anyone going to Mexico should understand that Americans are all thought of as wealthy and will bring a good ransom.

we got robbed at gunpoint in acapulco! Right outside the doors of the princess hotel. They did NOTHING to help us! Stay away from there!!

Yes, please stay out of Mexico-I have a second home here in La Paz, and there are way too many tourists finding our lovely paradise. I would so rather be here than in South Central LA, talk about violence!

maybe you should live there year round.

No problem here. I used to go to Mexico a lot back in the day, but not now. I don't go to South Central LA either.

The most romantic hotel in Mexico is one where you are serenaded by mariachis as your head dangles from a bridge when cartels mistakenly identified you as a competitor.

Why not support our OWN economy ? There's enough money getting sent south of the border on a very regular basis.

Stats showed in 2008 that money sent to Mexico from the USA was their 2nd biggest economy growth factor. Yes, plenty of our money is already going south!
