Glamorous '50s Home In Haiti

While scouring Flickr this week, we stumbled across this gem. It's the gorgeous home of Mr. and Mrs. Piere Liautaud's home in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and oddly enough it's archived in the Cornell University Library. The home, which was designed in 1942 by architects Robert Baussaun and Albert Mangones, captures the essence of the '50s down to the shag rug. The intricate geometric ironwork in the windows provides an elegant backdrop to the room.

What do we love most about this space? Well for starters it exudes style and class. From the scrolled coffee table to the floral-printed arm chairs, the home is something you might see in a '50s romance flick: Lovely and dramatic. We picture heated scenes and emotional goodbyes taking place within these walls. Okay, maybe that's a stretch, but this home certainly doesn't disappoint us on the glam scale.

Got A Bare Wall? Check Out This Clever Idea

Let's be honest, a bare wall can be a real challenge to decorate. Framed photos and artwork are typical, but for something different, these slim display shelves will do the trick. And for about $25, it's worth a try. These unique space-fillers can fit any decor style -- just stain in the color of your choice and fill them with your favorite postcards. Ready to take that wall from blank to beautiful? Keep reading for the how-to.

You'll Need:
Four 1''x2'' pieces of pine wood (each 64" long, or whatever length suits your space)
Rotary tool kit (like the Dremel Trio, not needed, but will add texture)
Pack of 2.5" screws
Pack of small drywall anchors
Primer
Semi-gloss white paint (or any paint or stain of your choice)
Power-Drill

First, to create an indentation that the postcards or photos can rest in, use a rotary tool like the Dremel, to cut a straight groove along each of the four pieces of pine, on the 2" side. (You may need a handyman to help with this). After that, sand the wood to smooth it out and paint them with one coat of primer, followed by one coat of semi-gloss paint. Next, measure and mark places for four screws equidistant appart on each piece of wood. Using a drill, drive the screws halfway through the 1" side of the wood. If you don't want to go through the trouble of finding studs in your wall, use drywall anchors as a supplement. Measure out the spots for the drywall anchors to go so they will properly align with your screws and sink them into the wall using the drill. After that, align the wood with the anchors on the wall and screw them in tightly. You may want two people for this portion of the project to ensure the boards are being screwed in straight. Repeat these steps for the last three shelves and you're all set!

Check Out This Hanging...Table?

With summer parties and outdoor entertaining upon us, we cannot help being intrigued by the idea of a whimsical outdoor hanging table that we've seen many versions of on Pinterest. This suspended table would surely be an instant conversation starter. But how do you make it and where can it be hung? Don't worry, we've got you covered. This table can be hung from trees, gazebos, porches, or just about any sturdy point, and as an added bonus, it's not difficult or expensive to replicate! Take a look at the how-to below.

You'll Need:
Hanging materials (rope or wire)
Plywood
Tablecloth or fabric covering
Drill
3/4" plywood round (The one featured is 36" wide)
S hook or carabiner (local hardware store)

First, take your plywood round and drill three holes along the perimeter equidistant apart, so that when you add the rope the table will hang level. Next, cut three pieces of rope or wire, making sure they are all the same length and will allow the table to rest at a proper dining height. Then pull the ropes through the holes in the top of the table, securing them tightly with a knot underneath. After that, tie the loose ends to a carabiner or S-hook and suspend the table from wherever you'd like. If your table isn't hanging evenly, try adjusting the rope. Finally, drape your table with whatever fabric you'd like and enjoy!

A Very Different Way To Store Belts

Use this funky belt hanger to stay organized in style with this Craft Of The Day. Unlike other rack-style belt organizers, you can customize this holder to fit your needs -- and your style. The rack's unique shape will act as an accent piece in your bedroom, plus it's a bonus CUT to finally have somewhere to hold your belt collection. Keep reading for the how-to.

What You'll Need:
Wire coat hanger
Strips of fabric (local craft or fabric store)
Pliers
Hot glue gun

How to Make It:
1. Bend the hanger to mold it into the U-shape seen in the picture.
2. Using Pliers, squeeze the ends of the coat hanger so they are narrow enough that belts will easily fit over them.
3. Add a tiny bit of glue, using a hot glue gun, to one of the tips you just narrowed with pliers. (Do this carefully!)
4. Begin tightly wrapping the fabric strips around the hanger. Re-apply glue every inch and continue this process all the way around the hanger, making sure to secure the ends of the strips with glue. Just let it sit for a bit and enjoy!
