Indiana man Donald W. Talbott, 23, was arrested Sunday after allegedly biting off part of another man's ear during a heated argument over which one was the better gambler, WLKY-TV reports.

Police in Greendale, Ind., were called to a Quality Inn early Sunday morning after receiving reports that a crowd had gathered in a second-floor hallway.

Officers entered the motel and discovered a gruesome scene: a man lying on a couch, screaming and bleeding from a gaping wound in his ear and a piece human flesh on the floor nearby, according to the Associated Press.

According to a court affidavit, the man in the motel room, Jacob Kerola, told deputies that Donald Talbott tried to punch him and then bit his ear during an intense argument about their respective gambling merits, Eagle Country radio reported.

But Talbott refuted that story, telling police it was Kerola who tried to punch him first. When asked by police why Kerola was missing part of his ear, Talbott said he had no idea, according to WLKY-TV.

Talbott's sister Melissa told the station both men were at the hotel as part of a large group of friends who had gathered for a party. She told authorities she heard the two men arguing from across the hall and rushed into the room to find Kerola on top of her brother.

But she corroborated Kerola's account of the incident, telling police she believed her brother had indeed bitten his ear.

Talbott is being held in the Dearborn County Law Enforcement Center without bond on charges of battery resulting in serious bodily injury and disorderly conduct.

If heights aren't your thing, than this epic freefall YouTube video is probably not for you.

Devin Graham has created what he calls the world's largest rope swing, which boasts a whopping 130 foot drop, the Sun reports.

Shot over two days in Bootlegger Canyon, Moab Utah, the video features Graham's friends flying through the air, secured only by rock climbing ropes. Some of them don't even wear a helmet.

After investing a couple of hours in the set up of the ropes, the swingers swoop under the Corona Arch, to which the swing is connected by five different anchors.

Since the video hit the web last Wednesday, more than 5 million people have watched it.

In addition, Graham produced a behind the scenes video.

Of course, Graham doesn't just take frightfully amazing shots from dangerous heights.

According to CBS, other videos of his include Christmas Puppies and Smashing Pumpkins.

An NC-17 rating is often the kiss of death for a movie, but one South Carolina theater is seeing boffo business for "Shame" after fliers that condemn the film started popping up around town. The fliers dub the Nickelodeon theater a "den of shame" and caution people not to see the movie, which features ample sex scenes and full-frontal nudity from lead Michael Fassbender. The 75-seat art-house theater (no relation to the kid-friendly network) has seen business go up since the flier controversy.

Two locals interviewed by WLTX Channel 19 admitted the negative ad, which warns that the film will "offend your sensibilities," only made them want to see the movie more. Since the flier lists the exact address and dates the film is playing and is posted right outside the "den of sin" in question, could it be the Nickelodeon itself is behind the campaign? See the video above and decide for yourself.

A lot of things can be "totes amazeballs" (translation: totally amazing): a spontaneous trip to Tuscany, a really special dinner or maybe even an especially good episode of Downton Abbey. Something else to now add to the "totes amazeballs" list is, well, Totes Amazeballs cereal.

This bizarre cereal came into existence after Tim Burgess of British band The Charlatans tweeted his Totes Amazeballs cereal idea to Kellogg's. Soon after, the company responded and created a cereal just for Burgess (as in, there is only one box).

Burgess explains:

I was thinking it'd be cool to come up with a breakfast cereal -- I heard someone use the expression Totes Amazeballs and it sounded like something from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory -- I sent a cheeky tweet saying I'd invented a new cereal.

Totes Amazeballs cereal is a mix of Rocky Road cake, Coco Pops Rocks, marshmallows, shortbread pieces and raisins.

Although this was a one-time only creation, Kellogg's is now getting "inundated" with Twitter requests for the cereal, according to the Manchester Evening News.

Are the Academy Awards rigged?

Film buffs, conspiracy theorists and bloggers have raised the question for years, but have been unable to back up its claims that classics like "Saving Private Ryan" and "Traffic" were snubbed for Best Picture by some undetermined "higher-ups."

Of course, the Academy maintains that the voters vote and the winner is whoever gets the highest total, but that hasn't ended the suspicions.

Say what you will about Yvon Gingras, he's not a man who does anything half-way.

The St. Ubalde, Quebec, resident was sentenced on Tuesday to six years in prison for his 24th drunk driving conviction, in what is believed to be an all-time Canadian record.

But Gingras' numerical achievements don't end there. According to La Presse, the 67-year-old man has drunk driving convictions going back 47 years, as well as six convictions for driving while under a ban, four convictions for refusing to submit to a breathalyzer, and 30 convictions for theft and assault.

In all, he has racked up 58 charges in 47 separate cases.

Gingras had been under a driving ban until 2021 when he got behind the wheel of a car last June. A member of a vigilante committee set up to monitor Gingras' behaviour contacted police, and Gingras was found with eight open bottles in the car.

Gingras pleaded guilty to the latest charges in October.

"No sentence could dissuade [Gingras] from re-offending and he has learned nothing from his convictions," Judge Alain Morand said, adding Gingras' behaviour "represents a serious risk to public safety. In fact, he has no respect for the safety of citizens, nor laws, nor the courts."

Gingras has 64 months to go on his sentence, having received credit for serving eight months in pre-trial custody.

In the dark abyss of the world's deepest known cave lurks a newfound species of primitive eyeless insect, one that researchers are calling the deepest land animal ever found.

The creature, now known as Plutomurus ortobalaganensis, is one of four newly discovered species of wingless insects called springtails, which commonly live in total darkness in caves, where they feed on fungi and decomposing organic matter.

The insects were collected during the Ibero-Russian CaveX team expedition to the world's deepest known cave during the summer of 2010. The cave, Krubera-Voronja, is located in Abkhazia, a remote area near the Black Sea in the mountains of Western Caucasus, and reaches a depth of 7,188 feet (2,191 meters) below the surface.

"The CaveX team has been exploring this cave for more than 10 years, hard and dangerous work in a remote area inside the mountains," said researcher Sofia Reboleira, a cave biologist at the University of Aveiro in Portugal, adding that temperatures inside the cave range from 32.9 to 41 degrees Fahrenheit (0.5 to 5 degrees Celsius).

"Everything needs to be carried to the mountains and then through all the cave," including more than 1.24 miles (2 kilometers) of rope and 800 cave anchors, Reboleira told LiveScience. "There are no machines, only human work. At the base camp we have no freshwater, only melted snow, and the food has to be rationed to feed almost 30 persons during 30 days. Searching for cave-dwelling animals is a task that requires several hours of active search — extremely difficult in the cold conditions of the cave, because of the risk of hypothermia."

Until now, the deepest known terrestrial creatures were a scorpion and an insect known as a silverfish, found about 3,020 feet (920 meters) below Earth's surface in a cave in Mexico. P. ortobalaganensis was discovered at a depth of about 6,500 feet (1,980 m) below the surface, and trapped using cheese as a lure.

"P. ortobalaganensis has no eyes and long antennae," said researcher Enrique Baquero, a taxonomist at the University of Navarre in Spain. These features are typical of troglobionts, or cave dwellers. "Nevertheless, it has pigment, usually absent in animals that are strict troblobionts." (The creature has a grayish body covered with darker spots.)

Baquero speculated that P. ortobalaganensis only reached such low depths recently. This would explain its lack of extreme adaptations to that depth. For instance, the organism has not yet lost its pigment as many cave creatures have. Coloration helps protect against the sun, show off to mates and camouflage against predators and prey on the surface, but is pointless in lightless caves.

The discovery of such organisms in the total absence of light and with little food available changes our views of the life deep underground on Earth. "It seems to be richer than we thought," Reboleira said.

The scientists detailed their findings Feb. 22 in the journal Terrestrial Arthropod Reviews.

A veteran substitute teacher in west suburban Chicago has been fired after she allegedly ordered a 10-year-old student to duct tape his wrists together -- and watched as he did so last week.

The Feb. 16 incident at Naperville's Graham Elementary School, part of the Indian Prairie School District 204, came to light when the fourth grader went home and told his babysitter what had happened. The babysitter then contacted area police, according to TribLocal

Police launched an investigation into the matter and confirmed the boy's report.

The teacher will not be charged criminally in the incident as the parents of the boy have decided not to press charges, the Daily Herald reports.

Nevertheless, Janet Buglio, a district spokesperson told the Naperville Sun that the substitute, who worked for the district since 2000 without prior incident, will be barred from working in any of its schools going forward.

The teacher has not been publicly identified and it is not clear why the boy was instructed to duct tape his wrists together, TribLocal reports.

WASHINGTON -- What kind of food did people eat during the Civil War? Period food and dining don't deserve the bad rap they often get, according to George Wunderlich, executive director of the National Museum of Civil War Medicine in Frederick, Md.

In an effort to better understand life during the Civil War, the museum has over the last few years extensively researched the foods eaten by soldiers and folks on the homefront. Diet, Wunderlich explained, is not only a colorful way to understand history, but it's also an important indicator of the population's health and general knowledge of nutrition.

In an interview with The Huffington Post, Wunderlich dished on the museum's research projects and gave us a peek into the culinary world around the time of the Civil War.

The Huffington Post: When you say you're looking at what people ate during the Civil War, which people are you talking about?

George Wunderlich: When we think of the Civil War, we think of the men who were in uniform. But there were millions of Americans who weren't in uniform, so [we want to know] what was their health like and what was their diet like.

HuffPost: Absolutely. So, what sorts of things did people eat back home?

Wunderlich: This idea that everybody in the Civil War was eating this disgustingly plain food just doesn't play. Bread puddings of all sorts, game pies ... with pheasant and turkey and duck and venison. This was not an uncommon diet. ... Stuffed crabs, oyster dishes of all sorts were part of a common diet in the major cities throughout the United States. Actually, they were shipping canned oysters and lobster to the western frontier as early as the 1850s, because we have the original cans that show up in steamboat registers.

HuffPost: That's pretty fancy. Doesn't sound like battlefield food, though. What was dining like on the front line?

Wunderlich: We tend to think of soldiers eating salt pork and hard tack ... The other thing we tend to think of is that Civil War people ate this very simple food, not terribly nutritious food, and certainly among the soldiers, that was not an uncommon occurrence. But that doesn't mean that people didn't understand that health and nutrition went in hand in hand.

HuffPost: Did that translate to paying attention to soldiers' nutrition?

Wunderlich: Civil War doctors were notorious for lobbying the armies to send what were called anti-scorbutics, or those foods that would help fight scurvy. Things with vitamin C in them. Potatoes, believe or not, and especially in the peels; onions; obviously citrus fruit when it could be attained. So there was an understanding that a good healthy balanced diet, would, in fact, make a good healthy balanced person.

HuffPost: So health was something people had an awareness of?

Wunderlich: These people had a much more balanced diet than I think we like to give them credit for ... The farm in the 19th century was much more a ecologically sound institution, because they grew various crops in a field rotation. They grew their own fruit, they grew their own vegetables. Basically, you were not only providing for a cash crop, but you were providing for the family for a year. Believe it or not, their diets were pretty balanced.

HuffPost: Off the field, what were the wackier things that people might eat? Have you tried them?

Wunderlich: We've done everything from roasted rat, which was something [eaten in] the prison camps, to more delicate foods. We find people are really fascinated by what people ate and what the recipe looked like. While I don't recommend everyone eats squirrel -- I've eaten it -- it's not bad. It doesn't taste anything like chicken, by the way.

HuffPost: No? What does squirrel taste like?

Wunderlich: It's kind of gamey. It's a little bit like venison that's been in a freezer too long. It's kind of a stronger taste. It's not like possum. Possum is just, ewww. Did that once, too. I'm not going to that again.

HuffPost: Note to self: Don't eat possum. What sorts of people ate squirrel? And why?

Wunderlich: You've got to understand one thing. Squirrel was probably most commonly eaten on the frontier, and it makes perfect sense that that would be the case ... It's an easy food source, and if you're on the frontier, an easy food source is a good thing. Squirrels are pretty much ubiquitous, they're everywhere, they were everywhere back then. It is certainly something that people would eat and did.

HuffPost: How did people cook it?

Wunderlich: Boiling was not uncommon, but it seems like frying was more common. Browning in primarily bacon drippings or lard, which was commonly kept in the house. You've got to make sure that it doesn't cook too fast. That's the bad thing with squirrel, from what we can obtain from our research ... There's not a whole lot of squirrel to a squirrel. The pieces are fairly thin, and if you cook them through too quickly, you wind up with something incredibly tough. So, you've got to cook it a little bit on the slow side with a lower heat.

HuffPost: The museum has recently been posting recipes to its Facebook page, including one for fried squirrel. People have been eating it up (pun intended). Why do you think there's such an interest?

Wunderlich: When we seek to understand what our ancestors went through, some people go out and they reenact history, they put on the uniforms, they go out and eat food of the Civil War encampments, or they go to a local historic site and they do things. But I think we miss just how connected we become with the past when we can taste it ... and it gives me an insight into something that my fourth great-grandfather may have tasted. I can still taste and I can smell it and I can make it. This is a great way to get a deeper appreciation for who we are and what we are.

When we make a loan, it's usually the same day,"

The pawnshop for the prosperous lends to hedge-fund managers, bankers, lawyers, doctors and even Oscar winners.

"Most people have a vision of pawn shops as sad sites. But that's not the case here," Tabach-Bank said. "I have a lot of people who come in who have a business opportunity and they need an infusion of cash for business purposes."

USGoldBuyers.com, an online pawnbroker with an office in New York, will also accept fine wines, said spokesman Jose Caba, adding that the rich do not always have liquid assets to keep up with their expensive toys.

"That's where we come in," he said. "We don't really want to sell the wine, or any asset that we take in whether it be gold or fine art."

He estimates that about 90 percent of the loans made have been repaid.

But interest rates and length of the loans vary widely.

British-based pawnbroker, borro.com, recently lent $120,000 in exchange for 128 bottles of Chateau d'Yquem, which had an estimated worth of $250,000.

Within the last three weeks, borro.com had taken a case of 1989 Chateau Petrus, valued at about $38,000, for a loan of $24,000, said its Chief Executive Paul Aitken.

Loans were also secured on various vintages of the five First Growths Bordeaux: Chateau Haut-Brion, Chateau Lafite-Rothschild, Chateau Haut-Brion, Chateau Margaux and Chateau Mouton Rothschild -- top wines regularly sold at auctions where cases fetch tens of thousands of dollars.

Aitken's clientele, whose net worth ranges from $1 million to $10 million, are mostly small business owners with cash flow problems. Financial advisers and wealth managers recommend many of their clients to him.

Britain's Prime Asset Loans, based in Durham, has a specific list of wines it will loan against including the First Growth Bordeaux, Burgundy's Domaine de la Romanee-Conti and, depending on the vintage, Australia's renowned Penfolds Grange.

"We lend up to 70 percent of the value of the wines and the term is usually seven months," said Richard Mews, a partner at Prime Asset Loans. "Investors are using this type of loan more as it is quick, easy and there are no fees."

Credit Municipal de Paris, which has been offering loans against fine wines, champagnes and aged spirits since 2008, can keep more than 90,000 bottles in its 18th century wine cellar.

"Just deposit your bottles against a loan that is immediately awarded," said spokeswoman Florence Marambat, adding that Bordeaux were the wines most frequently offered as collateral.

(Reporting By Leslie Gevirtz; Additional reporting by Dominique Vidalon in Paris; Editing by Richard Chang and Patricia Reaney)

Imagine enduring months of training for a half-marathon and crossing the finish line only to learn you might have not completed the entire race.

That was the case for about 40 runners participating in the Village Bakery Half Marathon in North Wales who were pointed in the wrong direction by misplaced signs, the BBC reports.

Pranksters reportedly moved at least two signs meant to mark the race route for runners.

As a result, only three of the first fifteen runners to cross the finish line actually ran the full distance, according to Yahoo! Sports. The others came up about two miles too short, according to the BBC.

Officials from the Wrexham Athletics Club, which organized the event, noticed the error during the race and later released a statement on the club's website empathizing with the frustrated athletes:

Wrexham AC appreciate that all of you, like us, are very annoyed and frustrated by these actions as we know how hard you all train and how important an accurate time is to you. Some of you have travelled [sic] many miles to be with us and this we really appreciate and we can understand that you will be particularly frustrated.

Still, the motive behind the practical joke remains unclear to chairman David Alun Williams.

“I have no idea why anyone should want to do this. The half marathon has been taking place for years without any trouble at all,” Williams told the Leader.

Nearly 500 runners ran the 13.1-mile race on Feb. 19 and the Wrexham Athletics Club has advised runners who may have finished with unexpectedly short times to note they may have fallen victim to the altered route.

Could Mormons posthumously benefit from being converted into gay people? At least one website seems to think so.

The website All Dead Mormons Are Gay offers visitors the chance to "convert" any deceased Mormon they choose into a gay person.

The site explains:

Sadly, many Mormons throughout history have died without having known the joys of homosexuality. With your help, these poor souls can be saved.

Simply enter the name of your favorite dead Mormon* in the form below and click Convert! Presto, they're gay for eternity. There is no undo.

Don't know any dead Mormons? Click the "Choose-a-Mormon" button and we'll find one for you. You're welcome!

Considering the note at the bottom of the site that reads, "Holocaust victims are not eligible for conversion," the site is likely a reaction to news that Holocaust survivor and Jewish rights advocate Simon Wiesenthal's parents were posthumously baptized.

The Mormon church apologized for the baptism, which it said was due to the actions of an individual member of the church who has been disciplined.

Hat tip: Fark

Life is just a little bit sweeter today for Andy Wrobel.

After previous failed attempts, Wrobel finally can taste victory as the man who owns the world record for pancake stacking.

Wrobel battered his way into the Guinness World Records on Shrove Tuesday by stacking a whopping 60 pancakes on top of each other for a stack that ultimately measured 76 cm (2.49 feet), according to Metro.co.uk.

The world record stack eventually collapsed, but, luckily, not before adjudicators could confirm that it broke the previous record of 74 cm (2.42 feet) set in Croatia in 2008.

The victory was especially sweet for Wrobel, who whips up hundreds of pancakes a day at a Melbourne restaurant called the Pancake Parlour. This marks his second attempt at the record, according to ABC.net.au.

GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS GALLERY (Story continues below)

<HH--236SLIDEPOLLAJAX--22002--HH>

"We tried last year and we got to 61 centimetres and did pretty well," he said."We thought we'd give it another go, and this year we actually did it."

But achieving greatness, whether it's on an athletic field or a stovetop takes serious, concentrated effort.

"We had a lot of practices, spent about 50 hours, probably used another quarter of a ton of buckwheat mix, and we finally got to the point where we needed to go," he said.

In many parts of the world, pancakes are commonly eaten on "Shrove" or "Fat" Tuesday, which is when many Catholics eat up all their rich foods before the beginning of Lent. As a result, the day is known as "Pancake Day" in British Commonwealth countries like Scotland, England, Canada and Australia.

Lil' Wayne and Snoop Dogg combined couldn't put together a rap sheet longer than this perp's.

Florida man Stephen Brewster, 32, was collared Tuesday on a car burglary charge -- his 40th arrest in Sarasota County, according to a police press release.

His rap sheet includes charges of fraud, criminal mischief, grand theft, petty larceny, robbery, loitering, stealing credit cards, and plenty more, WTSP reported.

"He's been through the judicial system [so much], he probably knows it better than I do," Sarasota Sheriff Tom Knight told the station.

Check out the many mugshots of Stephen Brewster below.

It's yet unclear how long Brewster's 40th stay in jail will be -- he was denied bail at the county jail due to nine counts of probation violation, according to the Herald-Tribune.

It's a frustrating problem for the sheriff, who regularly has to process Brewster -- and spend county money.

"If anybody out there has the answers, we would love to have it," Knight told WTSP. "Because we're frustrated too, with arresting the same people over and over and over again."

The Florida State Attorney's Office told WTSP that it will seek prison time due to the probation violations.

Meanwhile, The Gainesville Sun reports that another Floridian, Lisa Riley, was picked up for her 41st arrest on Sunday -- though not all of them were in the same county. She's served four state prison terms since 1988.

The backlash surrounding Chris Brown's appearance at the Grammys and subsequent remarks on Twitter just won't stop.

The lastest contestant to throw his hat into the "hatin' on Chris Brown" ring is WWE wrestler CM Punk, who is now in a "Twitter feud" with the singer.

On Monday, the professional wrestler, whose real name is Phillip Jack Brooks, tweeted, "I would like @chrisbrown fight somebody that can defend themselves. Me curb stomping that turd would be a #wrestlemania moment."

Never one to let things slide, Brown decided to engage with the WWE star. In true Chris Brown fashion he tweeted and later deleted: "@CMpunk needs more followers. He's such a leader! Not to mention the roids hes on has made it utterly impossible for him to pleasure a women."

The wrestler responded with a video directed at Brown:

"I never meant to include Chris Brown's name in one of my tweets for publicity. Now that he's accusing me of using steroids please allow me to retort," he said in the video. "I am a life-long, proud, drug-free straight-edge individual. So Chris and I come from two completely different worlds."

CM Punk continued, explaining that he doesn't have a manager, bodyguard, assistant, or PR team to tell him when to tweet or when to delete tweets.

"And I don't hit women. Period," he said, referring to Brown's brutal assault on then-girlfriend Rihanna in 2009. "In my world women are meant to be revered and respected, and I firmly believe that in this life there are consequences and repercussions for people's actions and I think Chris Brown hasn't paid for what he's done. Picking up trash on the side of a highway does not make amends for repeatedly striking a woman to her face and sending her to a hospital."

The 33-year-old wrestler finished his statement by inviting Brown to duke things out in the ring: "So, Chris want to throw stones my way and I say that's fine, but I say put some gloves on in the ring and I will choke you out and make you feel as weak and powerless and scared and alone as any woman has had the misfortune of knowing any sad, cowardly little boy as yourself. And all proceeds can go to a women's charity of my choosing."

Brown (who doesn't seem to understand that his tweets will be written about even if he deletes them) responded to the video with a rant about missing "real" wrestlers, and wrote, "@cmpunk the video u posted was cute! It's so funny how defensive you are."

Ironically, Punk is not the only one who wants to inflict some pain on Brown. Violence never solves anything, but that didn't stop a writer named Kevin Seccia, from offering a $1,000 prize to the first person who beats up Chris Brown.

In a blog post, Seccia wrote that Brown "is a horrible human being," and argues that he doesn't even pretend to be sorry for "brutally assaulting and threatening to kill a woman," and shows no awareness of what he's done. For those reasons he's offering the cash prize to the first person to deliver documented proof that they hit Brown with "at least two solid punches." For legal reasons, Seccia writes that his offer is partially a joke, but he seems serious about wanting some karma to come Brown's way.

Another high-profile hater is country singer Miranda Lambert. She was one of the first to express her disgust at Brown's performance at the Grammys and got caught in a Twitter feud of her own with the 22-year-old R&B singer. Brown responded directly to Lambert with a sarcastic tweet: "Using my name to get publicity? I love it! Perform your heart out! Go buy Miranda Lambert album! So motivational and 'PERFECT'!"

Lambert doesn't seem to want to drop the issue anytime soon. At a concert on Thursday in Amherst, Mass., she spoke out against domestic violence. "I just have to speak my mind, because where I come from, beating up on a woman is never okay. So that's why my daddy taught me early on in life how to use a shotgun."

CM Punk's video message to Chris Brown:
