SPECIAL FROM BetterAfter50

I love Bruce Springsteen's music. He was recently in Boston starting off on his big three-month Wrecking Ball Tour and reading about his performance in the Boston Globe got me reminiscing. Listening to his music makes me want to dance, run faster, and pedal harder. His songs have the effect of a youth elixir coursing through my veins. I love going to his concerts -- watching him move on stage --- so sexy in his jeans, boots, and his cool "T's." I also love that he is one of the people in the world defining Better After 50.

My Nana -- who was the ultimate example of BA50 -- was totally hip. She loved "our music" so when I bought her Bruce's album "Greetings From Asbury Park" she was over the moon. Nana grew up in Asbury Park. "Oh I just love that Bruce SPRINGSTEIN," she told me then. (She had made him an honorary member of the Jewish elite -- you know Leonard Bernstein, and now it was Bruce Springstein. I didn't bother to correct her).

My love affair with Bruce continued -- and quite frankly might have been what attracted me to my first boyfriend, Billy. It was fall of my freshman year and we would drive each weekend up the foothills of the Rockies from Boulder to Idaho Springs singing at the top of our lungs along with the 8-track:

"Rosalita jump a little lighter

Senorita come sit by my fire

I just want to be your love, ain't no lie

Rosalita you're my stone desire..."

I knew every word to "Spirit in the Night," and "Blinded by the Light." I woke up to Bruce every morning that Fall. It was 1974.

More than 30 years later, April 20, 2006 -- I fantasized about going to the first rehearsal shows at Asbury Park Convention Hall for Bruce's Pete Seeger Tour.

Magically, my dear friend Liz, who is from Asbury Park, called me that morning and said, "Bruce is playing at 'home': You want to go?"

"YES!" I needed a road trip. It was my husband Alan's birthday -- the first birthday after his death. The only man I knew who wore his jeans and boots with Bruce's same cool sexy style was Alan.

Thank you Liz, for knowing exactly what I needed.

At that concert we rocked out to "We Shall Overcome" and some great gospel mixed with Pete Seeger tunes. As we sat in that old rundown Convention Hall -- a virtual fire trap -- I focused on the ocean lapping outside, and allowed Bruce to transport me, sooth me and soften my pain.

So it felt comforting to read a recent headline in the Boston Globe that proclaimed: "Springsteen Plays From the Heart -- and a Teleprompter."

Oh wow, I thought. He's one of us. A BA50 who needs a little "help" now and then.

I didn't get to see Bruce in concert this time, but there's no question I could use a teleprompter in my own life. In fact, I've been secretly wishing that some smart BA50 inventor would create a memory-jogging device that is both hip and fashionable, like a bejeweled nametag we can all wear around our necks so we can just move seamlessly from one riff to the next.

Hey Bruce: How about a song for that?

I loved this article. As we approach our 50's so much changes within ourselves, but our high school days remain. Great upbeat article. Sorry for your loss, it must have been devastating. Keep on rocking!!

I have seen Bruce about 35 times in my life-there is nothing like a Springsteen concert. I took my son to see him for the first time when he played the Phila.spectrum for the last time ever and it was an awesome night. My son became a believer. No matter what is wrong in life, his show will pick you back up. Gotta meet that guy just one time in my life.

Loved your post! I didn't become a fan until a few years ago; what clinched it for me was his Super Bowl appearance. (I should be ashamed, being a Jersey Girl!)
My sympathy on the loss of your husband. Thank God for good friends who know us well enough to realize what we need!

How is this kind of flimsy mentality spawned? Has the DNA of aliens penetrated the earthlings blood line? What is happening to the people of our early beginnings? The Plymouth Rock people, etc? All this crazy rock and rap crap has turned the brains of our recent generations into mush, or worse. If there is a God, I think it is time for him to start over!!!

The working man's, blue collar, industrail manufacture of rock. His appeal is that he did not look like a rock star; he looks like he would be stamping parts out at the mill or the Ford plant. Thanks for a great story on a great part of American culture.

Thanks for the "YAWN"....

ugh, I always thought he was a disgusting looking man, looks greasy and dirty all the time. Not my idea of a sexy man at all lol, to each her own. Never liked his music either, probably cause I couldnt stand looking at him, lol. Though at one Point I did buy one of his more popular albums, to collect, it has never been opened or played lol.

He has the worse voice and is dirty looking for sure. His music gives me a headache. Never could see what anyone ever saw in him.

Yeah..I always felt the same way about Michael Bolton.
I can listen to about the first 30 seconds of any of his songs.
Then it is like fingernails on a blackboard.
And then there's that hair...........

and he is a socialist.

He had some good songs in the middle 70's. Since then?

Very nice. I'm 54 and was also turned onto Bruce back when you were, though it was "Wild and Innocent" album. Grew up with him in the DC area (thank you WHFS radio!) and saw him in concert with about 1,000 people before "Born to Run" came out. My other favorite artist at the time (high school) was little-known Nils Lofgren. I used to wear buttons of both on my jean jacket. Imagine my delight when Nils joined Bruce and The E-Street Band in 1984 and I saw them on stage together at Giant's stadium. Went to see The Boss last month in Atlanta when he kicked off his tour and thanks to some friends, watched him from the Pit section about 3 people deep. It was like when I saw him for the first time almost 40 years ago because now I'm at that "nostalgic" age. Music is one way to quickly transport us to another time in our lives...and to remind us that we are still young at heart. Thanks for posting. -- Spanish Johnny

I am from DC area as well, remember Damian on HFS? I remember hearing him snickering on air one day for about a full minute because he slipped up and said "Today we have a 30% percent chance of weather". I love your post, you "Get" the point of the article, unlike some here.

Fee and the boys are all still together. I have my tickets to see them in July at the Tupelo Music Hall, Londonderry NH, and Showcase Live, Foxboro MA. Stage show is toned down a bit. Saw them at the same places last fall. This time, after BB King Blues club in NYC, they head to Germany.
Love The Tubes.....

A woman after my own heart! God I love BRUuuucccee!!! My love affair started a little later than yours, but it has been profound. It was 2001 and I had just turned 50. Sure I knew his popular songs but they left me cold in my youth. I guess it took me that long to "get" what he was all about and when I did it took me by surprise and with a vengeance. He helped me heal from 9/11 with The Rising. Then kept me fired up when I experienced him on tour for the album. His rich artistry inspired me to write, to love, to heal, to live, to hope, to dream, and above all to be real, to be true, to be honest.

Like a life changing book, or a real life mentor, I have had a number of musicians settle into a corner of my heart and help me change, grow and heal. What would the world be without music? Thanks for your post. I really enjoyed it!

This story is great if you're a 13 yo girl. The incorporation of the husband's death as the lauch point for a second childhood puppy love is spooky to say the least. As for your entire life being directed by one pop star's songs, try other art forms like painting or sculptures....or perhaps poetry to inspire your thoughts. A single dimension obsession is not the way to expand your thinking or your life. You're a philosopher, right?

Live and let live. You live your life the way you want, let this woman alone.
