Find. Eat. Drink.'s 5 Canned Seafood Recommendations

Posted: 05/17/11 07:11 PM ET

In Spain, canning seafood is considered a desirable gourmet treat. Fresh seafood is preserved in its own juices or premium olive oil, with just a touch of sea salt. The cans are something you can keep in your pantry and serve for tapas all year round. But, just because it's in a can, doesn't mean it's cheap.

The delicacy of seafood in a can

Chefs have known for a long time that some of the highest quality seafood comes in a can. How much are you willing to spend for a can of premium goods?

Find. Eat. Drink. asked Barcelona native and the new executive chef of New York's Boqueria Restaurant, chef Marc Vidal, to tell us his 5 favorite canned seafoods and serving suggestions.

All this talk of food made me check out the larder because I now hunger for the taste of every item here. I only have tinned smoked kippers...back to the store for the right bread...enjoy!

I think Trader Joe's brand sardines in oil (purple tinned) are delish. Some brands can be so inconsistant with the fish soft one time, and hard/dry the next. TJ's are the same each time; soft, savory and plump.

I wish I could find the tinned tuna Wild Oats sold before Whole Foods bought the chain. They were tuna steaks in the flavor of ginger, sesame and I think olive oil. They were freak'n wonderful.

Where's StarKist, Chicken of the Sea, and Bumblebee?

If I had 50 bucks to throw away on a can of seafood, I'd be a Republican!
( because only a person without a lick of sense would pay so much for a few ounces of seafood)

Trader Joe's has some good ones, more economical than these. The sardines in olive oil and the smoked trout which is a little bit dry but about half the price of the vacuum packed trout.

I've had the in spain. In one place they were served sizzling hot in ceramic crocks, with wooden forks. They waiter said that they must be eaten this way and the wood was so that you would not burn your tongue. Probably a gimmick, but I love that kind of stuff. Also had them in Tapas Bars, served as you describe.

They very well may be the single most delicious thing I've ever eaten.

There's a place in Brittany that does sardines stored in butter. It's the only place I know that does it.
