Campari is one of the more popular apertifs. The ingredients are top secret, but it's believed to contain the infusion of sixty different ingredients, including rhubarb and ginseng. It's has a definite bitterness to it, but Joe Campanale sommelier/ owner of dell'anima, L'Artusi, and Anfora in New York's West Village, softens the flavor with his recipe for Roasted Orange Negroni Sbagliato

A lighter twist on the classic Negroni from Joe Campanale, sommelier/owner of dell'anima, L'Artusi, and Anfora in the West Village in New York City.

"The Sbagliato substitutes sparkling white wine for gin to make it effervescent and lower the alcohol."

Campari and tonic used to be one of my favorite drinks.

The original Negroni Sbagliato is from Bar Basso in Milano. A great place and a clever drink.

this looks delish...i like my ice cubes made with distilled water, they are crystal clear and leave no sediment or after taste, much more appealing.

I had my first Negorni last week. In the last 8 days, it has leapfrogged to the top of my favorite cocktail list.

I agree with the earlier poster about the potential enhanced bitterness from the roasted oranges, but the only way to find out is to try it and see.

All things Negroni are a real pleasing aperitif for me.

I love Negroni's but this sound kinda disgusting. Wouldn't the roasting put too much emphasis on the bitterness and over bower the gin and sweet vermouth.

This cocktail movement has really gone of the deep end.

Perhaps it would be sweetened by the proseccho they are suggesting in lieu of gin? I love an ol fashioned Negroni, but would give this one a try.

Oops, my bad. But, I wouldn't call it a negroni. More like a Mimosa, and yes I know that classically a Mimosa is made with Champaign and not Proseco, but practically it's usually made with sparkling wine, and once you've added roasted oranges who could tell the difference?

i dont like the classics getting messed with, all i have a sips of champagne, but on the right occasion i can have a foo foo drinks. but things like chocolate martini's etc are too far off the path for me.

Love love love Campari. I started drinking Negronis a few years back when the tonic I used to order for G&T became so vile, coming out of bad soda guns rather than from a nice bottle of Schweppes or Seagrams. The Negorni is a good alternative and almost impossible to mess up even by bartenders who have naver made it.

When I want non-alcoholic Campari I roder San-Bitter which is very similar.

Interestingly, your introduction to this lovely libation harkens back to its roots; apparently Count Negroni was staying at a hotel in California and decided to substitute gin for the club soda in his Americano and viola!
I was interested to see this story since I made a brace of Negronis before dinner this very evening.
Cheers.

I recently found San-Bitter and it is quite good.
