F.E.D.'s 5 Canned Craft Beers Worth Drinking

2011-03-22-20110320Dales_18512_255703_copy.jpgThe pop-top has always gotten a bad rap in the beer world. Like screw tops on wine, it just isn't a seductive opening. But now, the can is shedding its hillbilly stigma. We asked three experts to share their recent favorites.

Beer in a can
1 of 9
The can is actually better packaging for beer. It protects it from light, which is one of its major enemies and new canning technology provides a thin, food-grade polymer coated lining, which means the beer never touches metal.

We asked three experts for their craft beer in a can recommendations:

Garrett Oliver (Brooklyn Brewery Brewmaster)

Stephen Jeffcoat (Beer Sommelier at Luke San Antonio)

Fred Dexheimer (Master Sommelier & Beer Afficionado).

Upslope Brewing company out of Boulder is producing killer craft brews in the can! They have an IPA, Pale ale, Brown ale, and a 100% grain lager coming soon. Delicious!!!!!!!!

My favorite beer in a can? Bellhaven Scottish Ale. Pop the top, let the widget provide the draft for about 60 seconds, pour gently into a glass, and watch the head undulate to the top. It's magic.

Cans are more likely to expose beer to temperature related problems than bottles- they transfer heat so much faster.  Assuming that the beer is properly handled, modern cans are as good as bottled beer.  Guinness "draft" can that I had last week had the rich small nitrogen bubble foam that real draft does.

my fave container for cheap beer is the stubby 11 oz'er. i just feel smarter when i got a bottle in hand. Also they are made to be hucked. A mickey's wide mouth will do in a pinch.

Try the "new" Schlitz which has gone back to its "Classic '60s Formula." It's pretty smooth. I also like Carlings Black Label, but hard to find.
