Coffee Power Rankings

Posted: 05/14/2012 8:55 am

It's around that time again, when we freshen up our Coffee Power Rankings. Like a jolt of mid-morning caffeination, we're shaking the old list up this month with a sprinkling of new players. In case you're wondering just what complex algorithm we use to gauge the hottest coffee folks, well, it's no big secret. We drink a hell of a lot of coffee around these parts.

Three ex-baristas -- including one who happens to be a co-founder of the "Etsy for foodies" site, Foodzie -- are the visionaries behind the L.A.-based Tonx. Its goal, in the words of the website, is to deliver "awesome beans every other week" to your doorstep. Tonx works like a no-nonsense mail-order tasting club. Just sign up to get a 12-ounce bag of beans delivered every two weeks. You'll be billed every month for $38, shipping included, and are guaranteed a rotating cast of fresh coffees, roasted to ship.

I am, like the found of Blue Bottle coffee, a self-proclaimed coffee lunatic. Too bad his hipster delta bravo employees don't respect those of us wanting to try different coffee types in his establishment. I went out of my way to make a trip to Blue Bottle a part of my visit to SF and left beyond disappointed.

Congrats to Tom and Sweet Marias. I have been dealing with them for over a year and love the advice on the forums (which include suggestions from some of the manufacturers of various roasting and related coffee equipment). They have also begun streaming informative sessions on an occasional Friday. They have been a huge asset to my coffee roasting hobby.

I love how Huffington always picks up these product placement PR company written pseudo ads. I wonder what the kickback is? Must be substantial, since the whole fake list pseudo ad conceit is replayed constantly.

It's a commercial world, and there's no room left for people.

Royal Blue Organic's Cafe Mam should be on this list. Free trade supporting growing the way it should be done. Amazing roast options and fast to your door. As a displaced Oregonian, they are my tie back home.

Personally I am the most powerful person in my coffee business. I buy what I like and try the new stuff I think might be good.

Kudos to Sweet Maria's and Tom... great customer service and free knowledge. I get the feeling that everyone there really wants all their customers to have the best information, hardware, and coffee experience possible.
