It's been more than two decades since Starbucks started serving designer lattes in Seattle, and America's obsession with coffee continues to grow as a new wave of independent, boutique cafés opens across the country. Below, Food & Wine names America's Best Coffee Bars.

Co-owner Jamie McCormick makes some of the city's strongest and finest espresso drinks (whole milk only) while chatting away with regulars at this standing-room-only café. The space only fits a handful of customers at a time, but there's a sidewalk bar outside for lingering over a cortado and a fantastically savory black-olive shortbread cookie baked by partner Elizabeth Quijada.

I'm in Portland and Stumptown may not look as cool as some of the places, but they're this cities top pick!

right!? i had a great one next to my apt in seattle. i think it was called mission? it was good for me because every drink was double shot, and they came with a small donut that was yum. maybe they should get a reporter, or reporters, who know coffee to write an article about...coffee?
