America's Best Regional Desserts

You can get molten chocolate cake anywhere in the U.S., from Washington state to Maine, but good luck finding a fried peach pie in New York or kuchen in Key West. Despite the widespread availability of many foods across America, some dessert traditions remain hyper-regional. Here, Food & Wine names America's Best Regional Desserts.

Whether prepackaged at a bodega or freshly baked, the cakey, oversize cookie--covered with white fondant on one half and chocolate on the other--is sold throughout NYC. The origins have been linked to glazed Amerikaner cookies in Germany and Halfmoon cookies topped with chocolate frosting and vanilla buttercream at Hemstrought's Bakery in Utica, NY (available only by phone order). In New York City, a great stop for black-and-whites is William Greenberg Desserts, which has been baking the cookies on the Upper East Side since 1946.

I have a bone to pick with F&W. Kuchen is the state dessert of SOUTH Dakota and not North Dakota.

NYC- Black and White cookies? Every NYC bakery seems to have them, but they never appear to be a best seller -- and after tasting a few, I know why -- just not much taste to them; more eye appeal than flavor. Now, NY cheesecake..mmm.

Entenmann's (the national brand) makes a wonderful black and white - very moist tender cake.

Black and White cookies? Any excuse to list NYC I see. Persimmon Pudding in the Midwest is not only better tasting it's something people might actually cook.

coca cola cake and 7 up cakes are very popular all over the south....... I've never seen a coca cola cake quite as light in color as that.... they are usually chocolate and flavored with cocoa

Being a yankee I've never seen a coco cola cake but it sounds interesting. I haven't had a decent Boston Cream pie in years. This article is inspiring me to spend a little time in the kitchen this weekend.

I'm sure if a reporter wanted to do a bit more research, he/she could find some pretty great regional desserts in many other states/cities....

My mother used to make a Coca-Cola cake, except she baked it as a sheet cake. It was considerably darker than the one pictured, and the frosting featured both mini-marshmallows and chopped pecans. It was delicious!

I've never seen a coca cola cake that light, or baked as a layer cake either. The coca cola cake I'm used to is a sheet cake with mini marshmallows baked into it, usually with dark chocolate frosting. I suspect the cake pictured in the article lacks cocoa powder and is flavored just with the cola.

Where are the best regional examples found for : Pecan pie, peach pie, sweet potato pie, shoo-fly pie and the ever popular key lime pie? You may have noticed that I like pie.
