Last week, my neighbor was gushing about how her mouth was watering for peaches now that they are in season. I suggested that she satisfy her peach craving by making the Peach Tart recipe I recently posted on my website. She exclaimed, "Peach tart! Making a tart crust sounds very overwhelming and too time consuming for me." She loves to cook and is quite good at it, so I was a bit surprised by her adamant reaction. I instantly viewed her misconception as a challenge. I was determined to prove to her that every accomplishment starts with the decision to try. Cooking is no exception to this rule. If you believe you cannot make a tart, you are creating an obstacle that really does not exist. You alone are preventing yourself from succeeding. With a pep talk about how easily and quickly she could have a delicious result, I was able to convince her to give it a try.
While some may be intimidated when a recipe calls for puff pastry dough, most grocery stores sell a ready-made version in their frozen food section. Yes, the purists at heart might cringe, but in cooking -- like in anything else in life -- we have to overcome our fears in steps. So replace that cringe with a happy grin, and watch a person become transformed.
Now for the juicy part of this peachy story: About a week later, I crossed paths with my neighbor. She was so happy that I encouraged her to make the peach tart. She was grateful to have experienced delicious success with the store-bought puff pastry dough. Her family's reaction to her peach tart -- made with love -- was just as it should be: warm and fuzzy.
