Before he'd served even one year, President Obama lost the support of the easily distracted left and engendered the white hot rage of the hate-filled right. But some of us, from all walks of life and ideological backgrounds -- including this white, straight, 57-year-old, former religious right-wing agitator, now progressive writer and, given my background as I describe in my book Crazy For God, the son of a famous evangelical leader, unlikely Obama supporter -- are sticking with our president. Why? Because he is succeeding. Obama's critics from the left and right are going to be proved dead wrong.

We Obama supporters still trust our initial impression of him as a great, good and uniquely qualified man to lead us.

Obama's steady supporters will be proved right. Obama's lefty critics will be remembered as easily panicked and prematurely discouraged at best and his critics on the right will be remembered as nothing but shriveled hate mongers.

The Context of the Obama Presidency

Not since the days of the rise of fascism in Europe, the Second World War and the Depression has any president faced more adversity. Not since the Civil War has any president led a more bitterly divided country. Not since the introduction of racial integration has any president faced a more consistently short-sighted and willfully ignorant opposition -- from both the right and left.

As the president's poll numbers have fallen over the last two years, so has his support from some on the left that were hailing him as a Messiah not long ago; all those lefty websites and commentators that were falling all over themselves on behalf of our first black president during the 2008 election.

The left's lack of faith has become a self-fulfilling "prophecy" -- snipe at the president and then watch the poll numbers fall and then pretend you didn't have anything to do with it! The left wanted a rock star and got a president smarter than the talking heads. They wanted miracles and got hard work instead, they wanted magic and got the slogging reality of trying to govern.

Here is what Obama faced when he took office -- none of which was his fault:

  • An ideologically divided country to the point that America was really two countries
  • Two wars; one that was mishandled from the start, the other that was unnecessary and immoral
  • The worst economic crisis since the depression
  • America 's standing in the world at the lowest point in history
  • A country that had been misled into accepting the use of torture of prisoners of war
  • A health care system in free fall
  • An educational system in free fall
  • A global environmental crisis of history-altering proportions (about which the Bush administration and the Republicans had done nothing)
  • An impasse between culture warriors from the right and left
  • A huge financial deficit inherited from the terminally irresponsible Bush administration...

And those were only some of the problems sitting on the President's desk...

"Help" from the Right?

What did the Republicans and the religious right, libertarians and half-baked conspiracy theorists -- that is what the Republicans were reduced to by the time Obama took office -- do to "help" our new president (and our country) succeed? They claimed that he wasn't a real American, didn't have an American birth certificate, wasn't born here, was secretly a Muslim, was white-hating "racist", was secretly a communist, was actually the Anti-Christ, (!) and was a reincarnation of Hitler and wanted "death panels" to kill the elderly!

They not-so-subtly called for his assassination through the not-so-subtle use of vile signs held at their rallies and even a bumper sticker quoting Psalm 109:8. They organized "tea parties" to sound off against imagined insults and all government in general and gathered to howl at the moon. They were led by insurance industry lobbyists and deranged (but well financed) "commentators" from Glenn Beck to Rush Limbaugh.

The utterly discredited Roman Catholic bishops teamed up with the utterly discredited evangelical leaders to denounce a president who was trying to actually do something about the poor, the environment, to diminish the number of abortions through compassionate programs to help women and to care for the sick! And in Congress the Republican leadership only knew one word: "No!"

In other words the reactionary white, rube, uneducated, crazy American far right, combined with the educated but obtuse neoconservative warmongers, religious right shills for big business, libertarian Fed Reserve-hating gold bugs, gun-loving crazies, child-molesting acquiescent "bishops" frontier loons and evangelical gay-hating flakes found one thing to briefly unite them: their desire to stop an uppity black man from succeeding at all costs.

"Help" from the Left?

What did the left do to help their newly elected president? Some of them excoriated the president because they disagreed with the bad choices he was being forced to make regarding a war in Afghanistan that he'd inherited from the worst president in modern history!

Others stood up and bravely proclaimed that the President's economic policies had "failed" before the President even instituted them! Others said that since all gay rights battles had not been fully won within virtually minutes of the President taking office, they'd been "betrayed"! (Never mind that Obama's vocal support to the gay community is stronger than any other president's has been. Never mind that he signed a new hate crimes law!)

Those that had stood in transfixed legions weeping with beatific emotion on election night turned into an angry mob saying how "disappointed" they were that they'd not all immediately been translated to heaven the moment Obama stepped into the White House! Where was the "change"? Contrary to their expectations they were still mere mortals!

And the legion of young new supporters was too busy texting to pay attention for longer than a nanosecond. "Governing"?! What the hell does that word, uh, like mean?"

The president's critics left and right all had one thing in common: impatience laced with little-to-no sense of history (let alone reality), thrown in for good measure. Then, of course, there were the white, snide, know-it-all commentators/talking heads who just couldn't imagine that maybe, just maybe they weren't as smart as they thought they were and certainly not as smart as their president. He hadn't consulted them, had he? So he must be wrong!

The Obama critics' ideological ideas defined their reality rather than reality defining their ideas -- say, about what is possible in one year in office after the hand that the president had been dealt by fate, or to be exact, by the American idiot nation that voted Bush into office twice!

Meanwhile back in the reality-based community -- in just 20 short months -- President Obama:

  • Continued to draw down the misbegotten war in Iraq (But that wasn't good enough for his critics)
  • Gave a major precedent-setting speech supporting gay rights (But that wasn't good enough for his critics)
  • Restored America 's image around the globe (But that wasn't good enough for his critics)
  • Banned torture of American prisoners (But that wasn't good enough for his critics)
  • Stopped the free fall of the American economy (But that wasn't good enough for his critics)
  • Put the USA squarely back in the bilateral international community (But that wasn't good enough for his critics)
  • Put the USA squarely into the middle of the international effort to halt global warming (But that wasn't good enough for his critics)
  • Stood up for educational reform (But that wasn't good enough for his critics)
  • Did what had to be done to start the slow, torturous and almost impossible process of health care reform that seven presidents had failed to even begin -- and then got the legislation passed (But that wasn't good enough for his critics)
  • Responded to hatred from the right and left with measured good humor and patience (But that wasn't good enough for his critics)
  • Stopped the free fall of job losses (But that wasn't good enough for his critics)
  • Showed immense personal courage in the face of an armed and dangerous far right opposition that included the sort of disgusting people that show up at public meetings carrying loaded weapons and carrying Timothy McVeigh-inspired signs about the "blood of tyrants" watering the "tree of Liberty." (But that wasn't good enough for his critics)
  • Showed that he could not only make the tough military choices but explain and defend them brilliantly (But that wasn't good enough for his critics)

Other than those "disappointing" accomplishments -- IN BARELY TWO YEARS -- President Obama "failed"! Other than that he didn't "live up to expectations"!

Who actually has failed...

...are the Americans that can't see the beginning of a miracle of national rebirth right under their jaded noses. Who failed are the smart ass ideologues of the left and right who began rooting for this president to fail so that they could be proven right in their dire and morbid predictions. Who failed are the movers and shakers behind our obscenely dumb news cycles that have turned "news" into just more stupid entertainment for an entertainment-besotted infantile country.

Here's the good news: President Obama is succeeding without the help of his lefty "supporters" or hate-filled Republican detractors!

The Future Looks Good

I'm beginning to feel good about November for the first time in a while. Basically, as things get better, the Republicans have nowhere to go, and they're not any more popular themselves than they were before.

When Obama has served two full terms, (and he will), after his wisdom in moving deliberately and cautiously with great subtlety on all fronts -- with a canny and calculating eye to the possible -- succeeds, (it will), after the economy is booming and new industries are burgeoning, (they will be), after the doomsayers are all proved not just wrong but silly: let the record show that not all Americans were panicked into thinking the sky was falling.

Just because we didn't get everything we wanted in the first short and fraught 20 months or so Obama was in office, not all of us gave up. Some of us stayed the course. And we will be proven right. If you lack the energy to fight for this president and to work to keep the Democratic majority in Congress, shame on you.

•Stopped the free fall of job losses (But that wasn't good enough for his critics). No, it isn't. It is the slowest recovery of jobs since the great depression. He let the job losses become permanent.

•Showed immense personal courage in the face of an armed and dangerous far right opposition that included the sort of disgusting people that show up at public meetings carrying loaded weapons and carrying Timothy McVeigh-inspired signs about the "blood of tyrants" watering the "tree of Liberty." (But that wasn't good enough for his critics). I am not inspired by his "showing up".

•Showed that he could not only make the tough military choices but explain and defend them brilliantly (But that wasn't good enough for his critics) . He has yet to explain anything about Afghanistan. Nothing.

•Stopped the free fall of the American economy (But that wasn't good enough for his critics)- I think we'll just give credit to the cycle.

•Put the USA squarely back in the bilateral international community (But that wasn't good enough for his critics). Really. We've got more enemies. Any new friends?

•Put the USA squarely into the middle of the international effort to halt global warming (But that wasn't good enough for his critics). Another speech? Any treaties? Any laws?

•Stood up for educational reform (But that wasn't good enough for his critics) Any laws? Any changes to DOE policies.

•Did what had to be done to start the slow, torturous and almost impossible process of health care reform that seven presidents had failed to even begin -- and then got the legislation passed (But that wasn't good enough for his critics). Watered down and weak. It is basically the same policy supported by the conservative Heritage Foundation in '92 and he was too weak to point this out to the right.

•Responded to hatred from the right and left with measured good humor and patience (But that wasn't good enough for his critics). His big accomplishment is he didn't act like an A-hole?

•Continued to draw down the misbegotten war in Iraq (But that wasn't good enough for his critics) - No it isn't. There are more combined troops in Iraq/Afghanistan than there were under Bush.

•Gave a major precedent-setting speech supporting gay rights (But that wasn't good enough for his critics) - Gave a speech? That makes his Top Accomplishments. Nearly enough said.

•Restored America 's image around the globe (But that wasn't good enough for his critics). And then re-ruined it.

•Banned torture of American prisoners (But that wasn't good enough for his critics) - The promise included closing Gitmo. I don't anyone "credit" for doing something humane. Half the convicted felons would have done the same.

With the increasing push to dismantle health care since the election, we must remember that the US has the highest expenditures per capita for health care, but ranks only 49th in life expectancy and 46th in infant mortality (CIA World Fact book).

I couldn't agree more. Does anyone with a sense of history know how many terms FDR took to accomplish his revolutionary agenda or how much he was resisted by a hostile congress?? Give Obama some breathing room and enough time to get his job done! The ship of state cannot turn on a dime, any more than the USS Constitution.

This is such a profound, and profoundly moving, column. Obama may come to be known in history as Lincolnesque. Moving above the fray, taking punches from all sides with quiet grace and strength, always a step or two ahead in his thinking and taking the long view.
I have bookmarked this column. Kudos, Mr. Schaeffer.

Few presidents keep all campaign promises, but President Obama's record is especially not good. Go to the PoliticFact.com site: http://politifact.com/truth-o-meter/promises/rulings/promise-broken/.

On gay rights, he started with Rick Warren and never seized the "bully pulpit" as promised on behalf of ENDA or against the recent spate of teen bullying and deaths as Hillary did.

But forget all that. Most progressives believed his promises to address the biggest internal issue of our times: the incredibly shrinking American middle class and continuing declines of workers. What actually happened was just more support of Wall Street and huge corporations; examples:

*Bush administration "bail out" of banks not followed up with real teeth on Wall Street to modify mortgages.
*Federal judges not instructed in Chap 13 bankruptcy to modify mortgages, as promised.
*Health care bill does not allow imported drugs, there is no public option available
*No secrecy in matters of public interest--whole Gulf Oil Spill interaction with British Petroleum
*No income tax for seniors with incomes under $50,000
*End no-bid federal contracts over $25,000...not done.

The bottom line is that many if not most middle/working class Americans are today less economically secure than three years ago The upper 2%-meantime continue their decades long march to controlling most American wealth. The Administration has failed to address this central issue squarely by taking on Wall Street. this largely explains the "irrational" Tea Party attraction for the dispossessed former middleclass.

.
01:20 PM on 10/21/2010
You may be correct but...joining the TEA PARTY or voting for the GOP party of 'Take Back America to when we had free reign to destroy the middle class while getting rich'...is going to improve things...how?

You are one of those impatient lefties that don't seem to understand reality. I am still waiting to see my job come back but I also know that in the real world a president can't wave a wand and make it so. Sometimes I wonders if the far left is as ignorant as the far right. If we find ourselves with a crazy right wing congress in Nov. I will certainly hold the extreme on the left responsible.
08:16 PM on 10/20/2010
Hey Frank. I will admit I've been one of those you mentioned. On the left. But I NEVER, NEVER have given up on President Obama. Never will. What you say is all reality based and true. Are the Democrats gonna lose on Nov 2nd? Yeah. But NOT as bad as had been thought. In your piece you neglected to mention some of the 'sticking' points of this Administration. You seem to forgive all his concessions with Republicans. In the vain attempt at bipartisanship. I call it vain because it IS. What did it get them? NOT ONE VOTE. NOT ONE. So we're left with a really smart man as President. Who engaged us so well in 2008. Now he can't even seem to explain himself. He wants my vote, he's GOT it. I wasn't looking for the second coming in the 2008 election. And yes he HAS accomplished a great deal. If so, then why are we the midst of a fund-raising tsunami? Why DID he sit on Citizen's United? Hm? I guess he was too busy. Doing what, I can't figure. It SHOULD have been #1, but wasn't. The alternatives are totally unacceptable. But he's not perfect and he HAS made mistakes. Big ones. Still love him!

Here is a fact for you. My son in law is an engineer and deals mostly with solar and wind projects, and according to him because of the money and policies that this president has put in place we as a nation are starting to move more rapidly on this front than ever before. There are other things this president has done that unfortunately doesn't seem to get a lot news because we tend to see the bad before the good. So I say to progressives sometimes it is important to get the ball moving in the right direction so that eventually you can win the game.

Thanks again for tellin' it like it is, Frank. You are always spot-on!

You know just as well as I know. Obama is experiencing the same hosana/crucify thing that Jesus did, and he isn't even the "Savior" people wanted him to be! I guess it's just human nature to be double-minded, and impatient.

I'm stickin' by my imperfect president, no matter what. I'm with you, here!

Maybe it was due to the inexperience of Obama and his team, but he gave away bargaining points before negotiating anything from Industry (be it Wall Street, Health Care or Energy). It has been painful to watch, and incredibly disappointing. Especially because the WH has seemed deaf to complaints and warnings coming from insiders in the know (Paul Krugman, Public Citizen, HP etc).

Now, 4 - 6 wks. before the mid term election, they are hoping to find their base once again, students, progressives, and blacks, and wonder why they are not getting the enthusiastic response they got 2 yrs. ago. This administration talked about the work "we" needed to do, but the WH stopped communicating with us. 2 years, without explaining their actions, mistakes and disappointments; but especially not taking advantage of the opportunity to request help lobbying for passage of legislation.

Obama has lost 2 years of, support, and commitment he worked so hard to develop while campaigning. It wouldn't have been that difficult to maintain. I really don't think his followers would have been so unforgiving, if he had just kept talking to them. Not rationalizing, not platitudes, not "well some compromises have to be made", but "I made an agreement with the Pharmaceutical companies because I hoped that...". And it would have been nice to hear why he gave away environmental concessions without consulting Lindsay Graham, Joe Lieberman and John Kerry while they were trying to craft environmental legislation.

Mr. Schaeffer is correct. And I stand guilty of having moments of falling for the "instant gratification propaganda" which is why I know our President Obama will be re-elected and that I am optimistic about the future...why? Because who is perfect? Not I and not my President but for every nuanced approach to solving an issue I may disagree with overall our President is doing a great job. And I am going to vote and encourage others to vote in November. The alternative is a nightmare waiting to happen "to take our country back" Well, in my family taking our country back means 1. Not having the guaranteed right to vote 2. powerless black women being raped by all powerful white men 3. attending segregated schools and the list goes on and on. So when I hear "take my country back", I say Hell No!

If the Obama Administration wanted enthusiastic support from the left, maybe they should have thrown progressives a bone or two and not wasted so much time catering to Republicans and Blue Dogs. Our first-past-the-post voting system forces us to vote for the less evil of the two leading corporate sycophants, so Dems will still get my vote in the upcoming elections. But in the future, my money, efforts, and enthusiasm are going to state-level clean-election, conflict-of-interest, and instant-runoff initiative campaigns, not to mainstream Democratic candidates.

But kudos nonetheless for the spirited hatchet job you did on us spoiled, ungrateful, childish, unrealistic progressives. Way to reach out for support. Rahm Emanuel would be proud of you. I suspect Karl Rove would as well.

So if you disagree with someone's policies you are hate-filled? If you are unable to defend the policy without name calling, maybe it was a bad policy. The voter will get to decide in a few weeks thankfully.
