Wild Goose Heaven Our Answer to Hate

Posted: 06/25/2012 2:08 pm

The second Wild Goose Festival has just ended. I left a piece of my heart in the hills of North Carolina. Ahead is the third WG fest at the end of August in Portland OR. And then there will be next year and the next... The White House sent Rev. Derrick Harkins (faith outreach director for the Democratic National Committee) to observe and talk with some of us this year. So I guess WG got noticed.

Last year's WG was the first and there were about 1,300 of us there. This year we were closing in on 2000-plus. And now WG is West Coast bound too. The names of the speakers Jim Wallis and all the rest (I spoke 3 times) added up to a "draw" along with the big name musical performers. But the heart of the festival wasn't in the events but in the conversations.

For me the highlight of the festival was the fact that there was no wall of separation between us speakers and performers and everyone there. I spent 4 days talking with lots of people from all over America and other places too, about ideas but also about very personal subjects. I met Ramona who was the cook at the Indian food stand and found she is ill and has no health insurance and I was able to connect her with a friend who knew a friend at the WG fest locally to help her get the full checkup she needs. I could do that because the festival was full of the sort of people who help, love and care so for once there was someone to call.

And I watched the sneak preview of the movie "Hellbound" that will be released this fall. It happens that I'm one of the people interviewed in the movie but that's not why I say it is one of the best films I've ever seen. We watched it at 11 PM and talked until 2 AM. People were just stunned.

"Hellbound" is my answer to the question I get so often, "But how can we change minds?" It's asked by people who hear me talk about my journey from religious right leader to progressive Christian that the New York Times described as perceived by members of the religious right as treasonous. People know that you're either a "Fox News" watcher or an "MSNBC" watcher and the twain shall never meet. "Hellbound" confronts the great national ideological divide over religion (and thus politics too) as never before. And I'm betting that 5 years from now you'll meet former evangelicals and other former fundamentalist religious folks who trace their departure from the religious right to seeing this movie. I've never seen the argument made better against the angry retributive aspects of far right "religion."

I made a new friend, fellow HuffPost blogger Chris Stedman from the Humanist Community Project and heard him talk about his new book and his reasons for being an atheist and how he is networking to do interfaith projects with atheists and religious people. I shared a coffee with Jim Wallis (my fellow HuffPost blogger) and heard the wonderful news about how he has bridged the gap between left and right... at least in one area as he has been working with some major evangelical right wing leaders who have -- at last -- decided to back real immigration reform.

Then there were the families, and the children throwing balls to topple me into the dunk tank. We were raising money for the festival and all the speakers -- Jim Wallis, Brian McLaren and me included -- took one hour turns sitting on a slippery wet plank over a tank filled with murky water so that kids could get their parents to make donations then pitch baseballs at a target that then dumped us into the tank. I went in 22 times mostly due to a little blond 7 year old with a winning smile and killer arm.

I'm writing this on the morning I'll leave town and fly home. The last concert by Gungor was wonderful. Wow! Genie and I sat holding hands while the happy throng of thousands danced. We'd just celebrated our 42nd wedding anniversary with paper cups full of beer in the "beer and hymns" tent. I still had face paint on from the parade to the main stage we all marched in that afternoon. I'd marched next to children and we waved flags and sang and pounded on drums and belted out "When the Saints go Marching In." I'm so sad it's all over (for now) and I usually dislike festivals, crowds and fairs-- but not this one. Heaven is a place called Wild Goose.

Frank you spoke at Liberty U. in 1982. Just wondering if you could help me remember correctly something that you said? It was something to the effect that (it is just as much the gospel to change your child's diapers as to....???) I am not asking if you still agree with this but only if you remember what you said.

Last year I heard you speak, and we had the opportunity to talk briefly under the shade of the beer tent. This year I listened to you speak, and I found myself weeping on several occasions. While I wanted to talk with you, others on this journey of life seemed to need your attention. I was simply honored to hear you and recognized that you are in a bit of a different place than a year ago.

If heaven is the Wild Goose, then many of us will have the opportunity to hear your gift with words for eternity. If our God is as loving as you believe, we're in for quite a treat for the rest of forever.

Until next year!
Grace & Peace.

Really appreciate your honesty, integrity, courage and authenticity. Keep writing. Hoping I can make one of the WG gatherings one of these days. A "double belonger" in the spirit of Dr. Paul Knitter.

It is not right to wrap the cross in the flag and make political conservatism a requirement for being a Christian - nor is is right to make political liberalism a requirement. Christ informs our politics, but he does not endorse a party or a platform.

While it is true that there are conservative Christians who are loud and angry, it is also true that there are conservative Christians who quietly go about their lives of love, respect, and compassion, still holding onto the historic doctrines of Christianity. These almost certainly outnumber the others, although it is hard to tell because they do not seek attention. I read nearly everything Francis Schaeffer wrote and profited greatly from it, and it is sad to me to see his son denying a great deal of his father's work.

If you have not read Frank's books, you need to do so. While Frank is generous towards his father, Francis wasn't entirely the man who everyone believed him to be.

It would ONLY be fair to read his one of his most recent books before you make the statement about denying his father's work.

While some conservative Christians forget the teachings of Jesus about compassion, the need to know one's own faults and sins, and the need to be gracious to all, there are many "progressive Christians" who forget that Jesus taught that he came "not to bring peace, but a sword," noting in Matthew 10:34-39 that even families will be divided over whether or not he is Lord of all. A long and thorough look at Jesus shows that he claims to be the dividing line of humanity - one either acknowledges him as Lord or not, one either gives up the right to his own life or seeks to have Christ as the means to another end if Christ is even mentioned at all. Jesus Christ is neither a bold patriot nor a tree-hugging guru among gurus. Both conservative and progressive Christians need to look at the whole of the Bible's teaching on the teaching and work of Jesus Christ.

Schaeffer says "I'm betting that 5 years from now you'll meet former evangelicals and other former fundamentalist religious folks who trace their departure from the religious right to seeing this movie. I've never seen the argument made better against the angry retributive aspects of far right 'religion.'" For sheer depth of bitterness and rage, I have never met anyone who could beat a "progressive Christian."

Thanks, Frank, for all your writings, and for trying to keep in the spotlight the fact that not all Christians are right-wing fundamentalists.

People sometimes say, "If not all Christians are like that, why don't we hear about the others?" My personal opinion is that love and tolerance don't make nearly as good copy as the outrageous or flagrantly unchristian statements that do get trumpeted. But we're out here, working quietly in the world.

Hello Franky, I grew up on Schaefferism via BP, RPCES, PCA (I even have a picture of your father with my family from '57 still on my wall!) As a former "5-point Calvinist" I have come to believe Scripture teaches the restoration of all people. I have helped create a website especially for those of a Reformed background to see that evangelicals (Reformed and Arminian) are intuitively walking together into the paradigm of "Christian universalism." The kicker is that we will actually have to listen to each other and acknowledge our need for the entire Body...in other words, love one another. Then the world will know (John 17). Grace and peace...

My apologies Frank, I was directed back to this article and then saw how I addressed you...I guess I was caught in a time-warp!

Sorry to miss this year, car broke down in Virginia along the way! Glad to hear that this year seemed even better than last. Thanks as always for being a great conversation partner, Frank. Hopefully catch you in NYC in the future!

Frank: I just read Arina your article, and she said that she'll be looking for you next year. She'll be practicing with her already "killer arm" all year, she says, to get it to "super hero" level. :-)

Hi Nicole, you have a wonderful little girl! I was lucky to meet her after her best effort to keep me under water for over an hour! I congratulated her and let her know how much i liked her and respected her cheerful ability. What a lovely child! Best, Frank

Thanks so much, Frank. We adopted Arina from an orphanage in Karaganda, Kazakhstan when she was 2 years and chronicled the journey at www.sfisk.com.

Best decision ever, I'd say. :-)

Thanks for your kind words, and lovely article. All best, Nicole

Thanks Otay Hi well you know if you read my book Sex, Mom and God that I'm fighting for my LGBT brothers and sisters and part of my fight is to be glad for the incremental steps others take. One day at a time. We'll all get there soon. Love F

The last book I read by any of the Shaefers was "How Should We Then Live"...and like you, I ultimately figured out "Not Like That, For Sure".
But I'm glad you're on the right side of the LGBT fight, for sure.
As for Wallis, he needs to be confronted, not once, but over and over again, until he either stops pretending to be some sort of prophetic voice of justice, or publicly disavows his bible based homophobia.
There's no such thing as a big tent that can include those that would embrace full human rights along with those that would deny them, Wild Goose notwithstanding.

Doesn't Christianity officially teach that hell (gehenna) is eternal?
01:02 AM on 06/26/2012
Zen Sufi,
not per se, many demoninations of Christianity, do, but there is no offical 'teaching' on hell.
Some believers, consintrate on heaven alone, others, believe that the soul 'stops' existing' at death, and only the one's their God chooses will come back to existance at hte end of the world.
I will say many Christians seem to take pleasure in saying certain folks will go there...

Hi Zen, NO! And you need to watch Hellbound to find that out. You mean American fundamentalist teaching "Christianity" is another thing altogether with many branches and many teachings. No one branch of theology owns the word.
03:25 PM on 06/25/2012
I just looked at the website for "Hellbound?" and checked out the cast list ... Whoa.
Thanks for the plug, Frank - I definitely have to see this. Any film that manages to include you, Ray Comfort and Glen Benton on the same screen is gonna be a wild ride indeed! ;)

That sounds like a wonderful time....I live near Charlotte. Wish I had known about this Festival. I too am a Progressive Christian and pray that one day the Christian Right political party finds its way back to Christ's real message.
