10 Ways To Reduce Stress

At one time in our lives, all of us have uttered the words "I am so stressed out." It is not healthy to have an abundance of stress in your life. In fact, constant stress may cause a negative effect on nearly all of the major systems in our bodies, creating a very long laundry list of potential health issues. Stress is a state of tension, anxiety and nervousness that is created when you respond to the demands that come from work, school, family and the additional obligations and issues of everyday life. Learning how to deal properly with these demands and how not to create unnecessary stress may actually lengthen, or possibly even save, your life. Here is a list of 10 ways to reduce stress that I have compiled to help you keep the stress in your life to a minimum.

I completely agree with Frank Sepe that writing in a journal or diary is a great way to manage stress.

Sometimes stress results from regrets, and another great technique for dealing with anxiety from regret is to make a "Wish-I'd-Done-It" list.

How about using the computer less and reading good spiritual books - especially THE GOOD BOOK - and praying?! That always gives me a sense of peace that's unbelievable.

Running has become by far my biggest stress reliever. I started with a 5K, became hooked, and did a marathon this year. But it only has to be 30 minutes of running outside in nature to get me connected with creation and my Creator.

Stress is actually self induced. We become "stressed out" because of what we are telling ourselves about "stressors" (outside events). The way to eliminate or at least "get a grip" on stress is to change our thinking. In other words we need to dispute what it is that we are telling ourselves about these outside events.

Maybe it's just me, but "forcing" muscles into a state of relaxation sounds oxymoronic ...

Oxymoronic it may seem, however, learning to become aware of where you carry stress in your body, and how to release the stress, is useful. Techniques to teach yourself to discriminate between states of tension and relaxation can lead to stress reduction. The ability to know when your body feels stressed, and then have the ability to relax and release the stress is something I have trained people how to do in my 40+ years as a psychologist. think about stressed muscles like a sponge with water inside. when you squeeze the sponge to rid the water, it becomes lighter. same for a muscle. you clench the muscle, then release and the muscles reach a more relaxed state.
