Energy Innovations at a Big Apple Icon

01/20/2011 06:22 pm ET | Updated May 25, 2011

Who thought America's most iconic skyscraper could change the way engineers thought about green building? A recently completed plan to replace all of the Empire State Building's windows with energy-efficient upgrades is proving the iconic can also be innovative. Now Planet Forward and Nightly Business Report are teaming up to tour the Big Apple's sustainability landmark.

Tonight, tune in to your local PBS station to watch. After the Nightly Business Report segment, join Planet Forward host Frank Sesno for a live chat on the "Empire State of Energy." Take your chance to ask questions about the building's energy efficiency plan and share stories of similar building innovations near you.

The scale of these environmental upgrades is impressive - each one of the Empire State Building's 6,514 windows got an environmentally sustainable makeover, lowering overall energy consumption by 38%! Planet Forward contributor Devin Greene points out that this is just phase one, with even more energy reduction initiatives around the bend for the 80-year-old structure.
