Where's the Outrage? National Organization for Marriage Out to Destroy Lives

Posted: 10/31/2012 12:42 pm

The LGBT community and everyone who cares about fairness and equality face four crucial votes next Tuesday in Maryland, Maine, Minnesota and Washington State. All four elections are the doing of the National Organization for Marriage (NOM).

NOM has an unlimited amount of money at its disposal and is hell-bent on hurting millions of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans every conceivable way possible, especially at the ballot box.

In 2009 the Maine State Legislature passed and the Governor signed a historic bill allowing marriage equality in the Pine Tree State. On the first day possible NOM hired professional signature gatherers to qualify a referendum to repeal it. NOM was successful.

This year as soon as Washington and Maryland passed marriage equality, NOM hired professional signature gatherers in both states to place referenda on their November ballots to repeal those newly passed laws.

In Minnesota NOM lobbied heavily and got the State Legislature to place a Constitutional Amendment on its November 6th ballot to enshrine discrimination into that state's Constitution banning gay marriage there.

The fourth state voting next week on the freedom to marry is Maine once again. This time the LGBT community placed Question 1 on the ballot to overturn NOM's last vote and finally allow gay marriage to be the law just as it should have been three years ago.

NOM Costs Us Dearly

So NOM has cost the LGBT community and our friends at least $30 million and counting in these four states this year alone. NOM heads Maggie Gallagher and Brian Brown are determined to fight equality every step of the way no matter what the cost or the consequences. Once again they appear to be getting off scot free in their never ending attempt to demonize and harm the LGBT community whose only desire is to have the same marriage rights as their brothers and sisters, friends and relatives and to be able to marry the person they love.

NOM Under Investigation in Two States for
Election Irregularities

The Maine Ethics Commission has been investigating NOM for over three years on a complaint that I filed against them for money laundering in the election of 2009. In spite of federal and state lawsuits filed by NOM to try and stop that investigation, NOM has lost its battle to break state election laws and not disclose its donor's names. Earlier this month the United States Supreme Court denied NOM's second appeal to skirt the Maine law, yet NOM refuses to obey this ruling and continues to hide the identity of its donors. Just who are they trying to protect?

In 2008 NOM raised $345,000 including $10,000 from Mitt Romney to qualify and pass California's Proposition 8 and did not disclose this money at the time. The California Fair Political Practices Commission has been investigating NOM on those charges I filed as well.

This very shady organization that sprung up out of nowhere just five years ago to do battle against the LGBT community has raised and spent tens of millions of dollars and is at it again. NOM is determined to destroy lives and while doing so do everything in its power to avoid the very election laws of transparency put in place to protect us.

We should be angry and fight back against NOM with all our might.

God is not a conservative

Harvey Milk paved the way by teaching us that changing hearts and minds requires that all of us engage in educating the people around us about the dangers of conservatism. By talking to our parents, grandparents, neighbors... we tell them that with marriage equality everyone wins, including the economy and job creation, by prompting new and innovative ways to make money. We most watch closely the activities of extremist organizations such as NOM, but the focus should continue to be educating those who have drank the conservative Kool-Aid... we can still rescue them.

Their name, in and of itself, is a lie. If you make it past that thinking this group has any legitimacy, you've got serious psychological problems.

It's time for NOM to be prosecuted under the RICO statutes (either criminally or civilly) for their money-laundering operation. I really wonder how much of their money comes directly or indirectly from organized crime. What a convenient way to launder money. Set up an anti-gay consulting firm, give money to NOM to hire said firm and, VOILA!, your money is laundered.

I have heard and read that their money comes directly from the Mormon and Roman Catholic churches......another reason they would want to keep their donors secret at all costs.
12:41 PM on 11/01/2012
They keep them secret in order to protect them from people like, oh that guy who went to a branch of NOM carrying Chik-fil-A sandwiches and shot a security guard. Get it now?

Maggie Gallagher, the founder of NOM, had a child out of wedlock & later married someone else and then separated from him. Frank Schubert, NOM's head organizer, was married for nine years and had two children before he got the Catholic Church to annul that marriage so he could marry someone else. And these people are accusing US of ruining marriage?

How is it even possible that they can get away with everything they do? Isn't there someone in charge of these things?
12:42 PM on 11/01/2012
Everything they do is legal. Even if you don't agree with it. Look up the term: free speech.

If straights were in the minority, the constitutional issues would have been put to rest generations ago. You're asking a hostile majority to uphold - for our benefit - the clauses that would protect the minority (us) from their hostility.

I'm outraged but like Church of Gays I am a little weary. That said these pieces of excremen! don't just hurt the gbltq community but all the straight people who love them.

My ex is gay, his partner and others are some of my dearest, most faithful, loving friends. Our granddaughter is working herself up through the grades and her parents are already preparing to do battle with the school system if they even dare suggest those of gbltq community are of any less value.

And yes, I know, this is all well and fine but no one should have to still be fighting this battle. Everyone should have equal rights, everyone should be allowed to marry the consenting adult that they share love with. Creatures like NOM should kiss my patootie and then use their, apparently, endless energy to do some good for the planet instead of reminding me of the Klan back in the 50's and 60's.

End of rant.....Happy Hallowe'en!

Since NOM has still refused to release their donor's names (by court order), why hasn't Brian Brown been arrested for refusing to comply with the law? He is willfully disobeying a court order. What is the point of these rulings if there are no consequences for his actions? Why haven't the authorities in Maine given NOM thirty-days to comply with their ruling, or face jail time? I'm "outraged" that our political legal system is completely ineffective in dealing with unethical organizations such as NOM.

I've seen the National Organization For Marriage do very little - and that's being generous - in the way of anything FOR marriage. I've seen them do much AGAINST it.

Odd, huh?

"National Organization For Marriage" is a bit of a misnomer. They were going to go with "Maggie Gallagher's Merry Band of Bigots Bent on Denying LGBT Equality by Any Underhanded Means Necessary" but it wouldn't fit on the letterhead and "MGMBOBBODLGBTEBAUMN" didn't flow off the tongue.

Like most RRRW groups, their name is an Orwellian misnomer. You can pretty much guarantee if the organization has the word "marriage", "family" or "values" in its name they fight against those things, not for them.

I'm war weary. We need to study SunTzu's art of war closer. If we keep fighting with ignorant bigots, then that's what we're going to become.

Too late. Once I learned the extent of the LDS's involvement in Prop 8 I decided there was no reason to treat them as anything other than a cult bent on imposing their will on others.

Agreed. Their are times when I get so frustrated with them that even if a news report said a bunker buster was used against the main temple, I would not feel a single iota of grief for the loss of life. Their church has caused so much damage, so much homelessness of LGBT youth, and so much death with their lies and hate campaigns against us, all their lives combined could not even equal the misery, suffering and death they have created in our culture against us LGBT.

It's been a while since I read Sun-Tzu, so please tell me, what passage(s) are you referring to specific to this fight? I'd love to know.

Presumably section 2

"When you engage in actual fighting, if victory is long in coming, then men's weapons will grow dull and their ardor will be damped. If you lay siege to a town, you will exhaust your strength.
Again, if the campaign is protracted, the resources of the State will not be equal to the strain.
Now, when your weapons are dulled, your ardor damped, your strength exhausted and your treasure spent, other chieftains will spring up to take advantage of your extremity. Then no man, however wise, will be able to avert the consequences that must ensue."

I hope everyone, especially in these four key states, reads and gets what's happening in the fight for marriage equality. Especially our friends and family who say they care about their LGBT friends and family - now is your time to step up and understand how this personally impacts loved ones like me. Vote for marriage equality. Shout down NOM. Don't be silent. #NOgrayarea

NOM's legacy won't simply be their place on the wrong side of history, it will be the story of how unethically they were willing to act to score their political wins.

I can't say how much, as an individual, I appreciate your filing suit against NOM. As a man with some money backing you, you may be able to "make a difference". What can I do to help? ...and if I can help than the GLBT community should be able to also. NOM must be stopped!!
