Is Republican senator Jon Kyl a moron or just a complete liar?
Appearing on Face The Nation this Sunday, Kyl defended tax cuts for the ultra rich saying they did not cause the recession.
Instead, he said, the recession was the result of the housing bubble which was triggered by Fanny Mae and Freddy Mac. Kyl was not challenged by either his Democratic opponent Dick Durbin of Illinois or the host Bob Schieffer, and his comments were total blather that ignore mountains of hard evidence.
Is Kyl a moron? Hardly. He's an astute politician and like other Republicans he knows that a simple lie repeated often enough will be accepted by the public as truth.
Democratic leaders with the exception of Nancy Pelosi have let Republican lies and distortions go unchallenged for two years. It's time to go on the offensive and to do so in simple, direct language. Not in wonky policy statements.
The Republican leadership is lying to the public. Their policies are wrecking the American dream for the working class.
The Democrats need to find the guts to say this. And to say it simply and often.
