10 Ways To Combat Holiday Stress

Posted: 12/23/2011 10:29 pm

What's new or different in combating holiday stress? Holiday stresses are well-known to all. The problems are many. We have high expectations for a holiday time where everyone is together, happy and getting along. But that is often countered by battling crowds while gift shopping, preparing or indulging in rich meals, the weight gain and dealing with the likes of Aunt Ethel -- who complains about everything.

How to you rise above this and keep your stress in check? Here are some tips you can employ:

Some of the problem can be attributed to Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), not simply stress. It's the time of year when we may leave for work when it's dark and come home after the sun goes down. Bright, full-spectrum light for 30 minutes in the morning may help. (As pretty as they are, nighttime Christmas lights don't count!) Walking outside is great not only for the sunlight but also for the exercise. Even if it's chilly, bundle up and get outside during the day -- build a snowman, head down the road to visit a friend in the neighborhood or walk to the store rather than drive.

Instead of drinking water, it is much better to drink green tea. First the green tea is over 98% water so you get plenty of water. Now you may be concerned about the caffeine making it harder for you to relax. Caffeine raises blood pressure. Green tea contains caffeine. Studies show that tea lowers high blood pressure. You can drink it unsweetened or with a healthy sweetener like stevia.

Tea contains a unique amino acid not found elsewhere called theanine. It has a relaxing effect that counteracts the effect of the caffeine. The theanine in green tea is a natural relaxant that diminshes stress. [J Herb Pharmacother. 2006;6(2):21-30.] Studies show that it enhances the brain's ability to concentrate, learn and remember. http://bit.ly/afK0hM The Chinese did not grow all that tea since it tastes great. They did it since tea is a super healthy herb. They have joined eating and healing so food can be your medicine.

Again the tea has all the benefits of water since it is over 98% water and it helps your body to get rid of salt faster than water. It is called a diuretic since it helps your body get rid of salt faster. With less sodium in your body, then you need to retain less water.

The best thing to do is mostly ignore the holidays.

Great advice. All those ideas will help. But I can't help but notice that a most of these ideas are some form of "get out of the stressful situation and get into a more pleasant one." While that will help you cool down, you might still need to get back into a stressful situation, e.g. with stressful family members, that you still haven't handled.

I recently held 2 teleclasses on this very subject - how to deal with stressful family issues during the holidays. The classes are done, but they are available on MP3 to listen to.

If you're facing difficult times with your family this upcoming weekend and week, do yourself a favor and check out these couple hours of specific advice.
