Twas the weeks before the New Year
And all through the mind
Not a moment of silence
Was easy to find.
Deadlines, commitments and holiday food
Weight on your body and mind, crushing your mood
Expectations, travel and family galore
You wish for a cave, for just you to explore.
And then it hits you
Like a ball full of cheer
It's time for your New-Year resolutions
Everything will get better from here!
Eat better, exercise more
Eight hours of sleep until you snore
The elusive life balance of years past
Finally in your grasp, at last!
Year after year this scenario happens to us all. We succumb to end of year business and stress knowing that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. The new year -- a fresh start, another chance, rebirth! We set the commitment to ourselves to finally be all that we want to be next year. We set goals, get excited, buy new workout gear and join a gym. Holiday foods are quickly replaced with greens and quinoa, we vow to ourselves that just one glass of wine will be enough, and we debate the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids.
With complete confidence in our abilities to stick to our guns, we decide that we will attend more of our children's after school events, not work on weekends, and hit the sack an hour earlier every night. Ah yes. As the visions of health and life balance dance in our heads, we feel strong, confident and anxious to start the new year.
Then it happens. At the beginning of February, as we once again derail from our resolutions, we realize that the light at the end of our tunnel was really a train.
This year I'd like to ask you to take a different approach to your New Year's resolution/planning/commitments. Instead of trying to boil the ocean, start by simply dipping your foot in the water. Doing something consistently for an extended period of time forms habits. If you commit to doing too much, inevitably, you will not be able to keep up the pace.
Try the Five-Minute Resolution approach to 2014. Simply identify one new healthy habit that you will commit to doing five minutes every day. Maybe you will spend five minutes every day planning your meals so that you eat healthier. Or how about moving from not having an exercise routine to doing jumping jacks every day for five minutes? Five extra minutes of sleep; five minutes of deep breathing in complete stillness; five minutes talking to your partner; five minutes reading to your kids before bed. The point is to take five minutes away from working and apply them to something that will make you healthier, happier and more balanced.
Five minutes! Who doesn't have five minutes? If you can't take five minutes away from working to do something for yourself, well then, I hate to be the one to tell you, but you have an extremely bad case of out-of-whack priorities.
If you are successful in keeping up your five-minute habit and want to increase it to 10, please do! Even try 15, 20 or 30! But, the minute you begin to see yourself not keeping your daily habit, go back to your five minutes. Five minutes is better than zero.
