Film award season is upon us and as in seasons past, most awards are going to smaller films and not the wildly successful blockbusters. While these smaller, real life, actor-driven dramas have great merit, it's worthwhile to remember that it is the blockbusters that keep the industry afloat by generating nearly all industry profits. As a point of comparison, last year's top honors for both the Oscar and the Golden Globe Awards went to 12 Years A Slave, a film that grossed about $188 million worldwide, while Frozen grossed nearly $1.3 billion. The big winner at the Golden Globes this year was Boyhood, a film that has barely broken $43 million worldwide to date, whereas mega blockbusters bolted past $600 million. In fact, none of the top 10 mega blockbusters were even nominated for a Best Picture Oscar this year. Instead, they were relegated to the visual effects category. Clearly, what industry professionals think of as artistry is far different than what the public appreciates as artistry.
So now you can vote. This award is unique by giving general moviegoers (not just industry professionals) the opportunity to vote for the best blockbuster film (among the top 10 box office movies), based upon each blockbuster's artistic quality (not simply your favorite). The Oscars and Golden Globe awards do not have a best blockbuster category and their voters are industry insiders. The Hollywood Film Awards recently added a blockbuster category (could they have read my recommendation in the Huffington Post a year ago?), but the voters are still industry people. And while the general public votes for the People's Choice Awards, its top award is titled "favorite movie" which can be far different than voting on the quality of a film's artistry.
As of December 31st, 2014, the following 10 films had the highest worldwide box office receipts with each achieving over $600 million. They are the blockbusters of blockbusters! Use the link at the bottom to vote for the one that in your opinion has the finest overall artistic quality when taking into account each film's story, characters/acting, production and visual effects.
