It's Not What Romney Said, It's Where He Said It

Posted: 09/20/2012 8:15 am

Mitt Romney's recent "47 percent" comments that he made at the Boca Raton home of Wharton grad and part-76ers owner Marc Leder has unleashed a media storm of controversy and raised numerous questions.

Did he really intend to alienate 47 percent of the electorate? Does he really feel that almost half of the voting public relies on the government? Who is Marc Leder and what does he think of the Sixers' chances this year? More importantly, with all the opportunities available today for a rich Wharton grad why in the hell would he invest in the Sixers? I'm sure the public, particularly those of us from Philadelphia, will be discussing these issues over Yuenglings and cheesesteaks over the weeks to come.

But from a business perspective, it seems that the media is missing the point. It's not what Governor Romney said. It's where he said it. That's the lesson for us to understand.

Romney said this:

There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it. That that's an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what ... These are people who pay no income tax.

Fact checkers on both sides of the argument are agreeing and disagreeing which means that what he said can at the very least be defended. And while many in the country find this statement to be insulting and still many more believe it could cost him the election, there are just as many who completely agree with what he said and still others who may now vote for him because of these comments. For me, I'm disappointed not so much by what he said, but how the message got out. Romney has positioned himself as a man of business and a strong manager of organizations. But this is not how a good business leader communicates with his people.

If you're a business owner or manager and you have an underlying point of view that affects your company's direction, don't be afraid to say it in public. In fact, make it part of your mission. I have clients who are devout Catholics and others who are intense capitalists. They're not driving their religion or way of life down people's throats and of course they're not allowing their beliefs to discriminate against their employees. But many of them incorporate these beliefs into their company's direction. They're not afraid to say what they believe. They don't hide these beliefs behind closed doors or share them with just a select few. In fact many make these beliefs the centerpiece of their business. "Do unto others as you have them do unto you," said one mission statement at a company run by a Catholic friend. ""Money is better than poverty, if only for financial reasons," a client of mine (and Woody Allen fan) included in his.

When you're the boss, be it the CEO, the president, the VP of Sales... you're always being watched. Or recorded. Or videoed. Always. Smart business people know this. They don't say things to small groups of people unless they're prepared to say them to their entire community. They do the reverse of what Governor Romney did. They announce a big plan or a program ("We're going to expand into the Southwest Region!" "We're changing our health insurance company!" "There's a new selection of coffee in the snackroom!") to the community at large, through a series of emails, memos and presentations. And then they (and their senior managers) disperse to speak about the plan in detail to smaller groups, taking questions and explaining the finer points. Believing that almost half of the country is dependent on the government and will vote for Obama (and that this is a bad thing) is a pretty fundamental part of a candidate's convictions and useful information for the voting public to know. Important messages like this shouldn't be leaked. They should be announced as a guiding principle and then explained.

And that's assuming that this is a fundamental part of your convictions. If it's just an opinion then you keep it to yourself. You don't advertise it. Dan Cathy, the CEO of Chick-fil-A caused a storm when it became known that he was against gay marriage. But this was no secret, and definitely not just an opinion. It is a very serious principle of his. In fact,

Chick-fil-A's charitable division, WinShape Foundation, works with and supports such groups as the National Organization for Marriage, the Ruth Institute, the Pennsylvania Family Institute, Focus on the Family and Exodus International, among others, all fighting to ban marriage for same-sex couples and some advocating to "cure" homosexuality.
Agree with him or not he's always been out of the closet with his convictions.

Which is why Governor Romney was mistaken. Any business leader will tell you that if this is your conviction then say it man! Don't let it leak out at some meeting of billionaires in Boca. Take a stand and make it part of your mission, your campaign, your contribution to the world. Of course you're going to find when you take a stand on an issue you're going to have people that disagree. But that's what being a leader is all about. And great business leaders run their companies not solely on numbers or metrics but on their principles. They truly believe that they are creating value and good for the world in their own unique way. This message is communicated to their people so that everyone knows where their leader stands and what kind of person he or she is.

There's plenty of time until the elections, and this event will ultimately fade into the background like all others. Here in Philadelphia, I doubt the former governor's statements will change the eventual outcome of the vote... this is definitely a Democratic stronghold. But Democrat or Republican, business owners and managers should take away this important lesson: have a few principles and communicate them clearly. And for God's sake, don't hire Marc Leder as your financial planner! Really? The Sixers?

"Which is why Governor Romney was mistaken. Any business leader will tell you that if this is your conviction then say it man! "
===

Romney already said he didn't mean the elderly nor the military when he said that. Then who did he mean? The simplest explanation that makes sense is that "the 47%" has simply become code for the usual Republican targets: blacks, Hispanics, and promiscuous mothers.

Say what you mean? Oh, don't worry. We're getting there. Santorum already called President Obama the n-word in a Janesville speech the media recorded but didn't report on. Gingrich told blacks to their face to trade their food stamps for jobs. The amount of racism in this election has simply been amazing.

I'm sure by next election, we'll be back to the days where Southern politicians ran on explicitly "anti-n*gger" platforms... and got elected. Who will oppose them? After all, as a percentage of the population, blacks have not increased their share very much over time. In 1900, they were 11.6% of the population. Today, they are 12.5% of the population.

By the time you add up all the gaffes from Romney, and the percentages of people he has PO'd, there's not many left to vote for him. From the 47 %, to LGBT folks, and women, etc. etc., I've got to ask the question, who the heck is left to vote for him, the deaf and blind?

There are some people in Orange County, CA that don't watch the news that are going to vote for him. I met them. My head exploded shortly after...

I'm part of that 47%, but still pay payroll taxes, social security taxes, medicare taxes, property taxes, sales taxes, gasoline taxes, sin taxes, etc. etc. etc. And I'll bet I pay a larger percentage of my income in overall taxes than most of you jerks that think we pay nothing. I'll guarantee that I pay a larger percentage of my income in OVERALL taxes than Romney does.
03:24 PM on 09/20/2012
Everyone payes those taxes ( exxcept maybe property taxes ), he said " income taxes ". That is the part where at the end of the year you write a check to the U. S. Treasury over and above all the other taxes you pay.

Everybody pays the taxes you mentioned. In every group there are exceptions and you appear to be one of those. The problem is that the group that doesn't pay income taxes has grown too large. We should separate out those that have a genuine need and then everybody else should pay income taxes. Flat tax, graduated tax, millionare penalty tax,,,, you pick. I like Cain's plan, but congress needs to address the problem.

It pains me to think that I fought in two wars, made a career out of the military, I am decorated and republicans think I am a bumb on the public dole, now that I am retired. How's that for a kick in the teeth. Shameful.

You didnt think being lied Into Iraq and starting 2 wars without enough troops for either and taking TAXCUTS for the first time in human history was enough?

I want to thank you very much for your service. I can't vouch for all republicans, but I and my family all believe that the military is noble and that soldiers and officers are to be respected. such people, obviously, deserve the pay. I don't think you should be included in a list of people who don't work for their money, and therefore don't pay income taxes. I apologize for the horrible comments above. THANK YOU SO MUCH for keeping this country safe!

Romney dared to state the obvious. The bottom 50% pay nothing and elect politicians who tickle their ears and promise them more of OTHER PEOPLES MONEY. How do we get the bottom 50% to pay anything is the real question. With the Marxists relying on their votes to get elected, don't hold your breath. If only we could get the bottom 50% to pay ANYTHING. Can’t these sloths contribute SOMETHING, A TINY BIT, A PENNY OR TWO. We aren’t even allowed to ask them to work for their free lunch. The “rich” are already unfairly taxed and subject to the tyranny of the majority. Why do liberals draw the fairness line at “rich” people. Why don’t the “rich” deserve equal treatment under the law. The fact is, the super rich deserve a tax break. The top 1% pay 40% of taxes and the top 10% pay 71% of the taxes. How is that fairness??? Only in class envyland is stealing from the achievers "fair". Stop attempting unconstitutional and grossly unfair class envy. The “rich” are people too.

So you want to tax active service members in a combat zone how patriotic of you. Sixty one percent of those that pay nothing, pay payroll taxes meaning they work but do not make enough to be taxed. A large part of that was do to changes to the tax code from the Bush Tax cuts. So by your incorrect use of Marxist, that would make Bush and Paul Ryan who voted for those tax cuts the Marxists.

They sponge off the benefits of the income tax payers and who put you in charge of the world to determine they don't make enough to be taxed. What is enough according to you freeloaders and why do you Marxists get to draw the line. When will you seek tax fairness for the wealthy? If you want the benes THEN PAY THE TAX FOR YOUR COLLECTIVE GARBAGE. Since I was in a combat zone for 6 years, by all means exempt the heroes who protect your welfare check, but PAY INTO THE SYSTEM YOU WANT TO EAT FROM OR SHUT UP.

What a narrow, egoistic and completely skewed view. Name one single nation that its governance does what you dream of happening. I'm betting you'd find the more autocratic dictatorships closer to the ideal. And you have the skewed sense of righteous indignation to label folks thinking differently as traitorous "Marxists." Shame on you.

I don't understand what was bad about that? So he said, let's wait until after the election to talk about that. So? He was just recognizing that he didn't have the political capital at the time.

It absolutely and unambiguously is about WHAT Romney said. This fascination with equating business with government is nonsense. One looking to be a leader in governance is not the same as leading a private business, period.

As to the lesser subject (yes, lesser) of where he stated his beliefs, The "retired" CEO running for president was merely preaching to a choir in their church of insulated privilege.

Romney's comments when he was among what he considered his "peeps" show true insight into what most have suspected all along. There is a "People Like Us" mentality...those of us who fly private or first class, vacation at the same handful of high end resorts, belong to the same golf clubs....

He made these comments because he thought he was among his insulated PLUer's....

A comment made on Bloomberg radio this am ..this election is a HISTORICAL one. It truly will be an election in which we choose the direction of the country. Do we move forward and provide support those wounded providing protection for our freedoms, our elderly, our sick, and give our children the opportunities they need to become educated and healthy members of society? We are only as strong as our weakest link.....Palm Beach, the Hamptons, the South of France will always be there for Mitt and his ilk, but I believe Obama embraces "all Americans". Are there some who may abuse the system at the low income levels? Yes. But there is just as much, if not more abuse at the upper echelon. "Creative accounting, loopholes and offshore accounts.....I would call that "entitled behavior".

Yeah, and as a 1%er who pays 47% in taxes in CT/NY who write 6 figure checks to the IRS for over 10 years......it would not occur to me to find a "creative account" or move my money offshore.  Greenwich, CT my hometown is one of the most affluent towns in the world.  This BS about people needing a leg up being lazy or entitled is absolute garbage.  I see guys lined up every day wiling to work for 7 or 8 bucks and hour, only to go back to a boarding house, and get up and do it all over again the next day.    I probably have 20 on my property right now, now of them are slackers...they are simply chasing a dream, the same one I chased 25 years ago when I was able to borrow to go to college and begin a career.

Romney is the classic Monday morning quarterback. Say something, see what sticks and then say it again with something new added. We need a President that is not always walking back from what they said and apologizing. Correction, Mitt never apologizes for anything.

Mr Marks, while I agree with your points made, I don't understand why Mitt Romney is so often given a pass on WHAT he says.
Mitt Romney has not been held responsible for the words he chooses to make his points. He is allowed multiple walk-backs and re-statements in order to clarify the positions he meant to make.
Why is this facilitated?
We have never elected a president based on his ability to eventually get his statement right.
Communicating his case clearly and concisely should be a job requirement. But Mitt Romney is allowed to say whatever sounds good at the moment, and then spend two or three days cleaning up his meaning and reacting to feedback.
It's like nothing I've seen before.

That's because Mr. Marks is as out of touch as Romney. This is the guy who wrote an article for Forbes titled "If I Was a Poor Black Kid."

And what would Mr. Marks do if he was a poor black kid? According to him, he would just somehow know to act like a middle-class white person, and go to school, use the library, study computers, and become a programmer. Sure, at home, his Mom would be turning tricks in the living room between rocks of crack, but oh, he'd be at the library, studying. And at home, his uncle on parole could be drunk all day and beat his Mom and his brothers, but he'd be watching TED clips on YouTube.

Of course, that's because when Mr. Marks was a middle-class white kid, nobody sent him to school and nobody looked over his report cards. Nobody at home guided him or ever set an example for him. Nope. He did it all himself. Just grabbed those little bootstraps and pulled. And it's not even like he's a fantastic success. At least Romney really does have $250 million to his name.
05:10 PM on 09/20/2012
he gets a pass because he will eventually say something different, and we learned from Palin that Republicans don't like you to use their own words, in the order that they said them, against them.
BTW he now says he is running for 100% of the people, so apparently the 47% are going to be let back in.
See!
