In the hardscrabble world of American politics, there are still some issues too hot to touch, too sensitive for discussion. You know, like the "R" word. People like to throw race around like, well, Donavan McNabb throws the football (he being an "affirmative action" quarterback, according to Rush Limbaugh), but usually this offense only moves in one direction.
Well, I've got news for you, baby, and it isn't pretty: Some of my well-placed sources at Fox News have confirmed for me what I had suspected all along -- conservative media pundits Limbaugh, George Will and Pat Buchanan are voting for John McCain...because he's white.
That's right. The "R" word is out of the bag now and it's time we all took a good hard look.
Limbaugh says his endorsement is not about race... OK, fine. I am now researching his past endorsements to see if I can find all the moderate black Republican candidates he's endorsed after berating them for months and calling them phonies. I'll let you know what I come up with.
I guess Limbaugh's endorsement of McCain reflects his regret for all his attacks on moderates over the years. Yes, let's hear it for transformational figures.
As for Pat Buchanan, we gotta ask a question: would he be endorsing John McCain if he were a black moderate Republican?
I don't think so. Looks to me like Pat is playing the race card when it comes to his support of McCain, a figure whom he has railed against repeatedly since the 1990s. If McCain or Palin weren't white, do you think good ol' Pat would be voting for them?
Pat's the same guy who wrote that "any man or any woman, of any color or creed, can be a good American. We know that from our history. But when it comes to the ability to assimilate into a nation like the United States, all nationalities, creeds, and cultures are not equal." So how the hell can we have a black president? Pat says he likes his country 90 percent white. "If you go to the end of the century, the white and European population is down to about three percent. This is what I call the death of the West. I see the nations dying when the populations die. I see the civilization dying. It is under attack in our own countries, from our own people."
Of course he's voting for John McCain because he's white.
Come on now. And what about Pat's act of dressing up in drag and calling himself "Bay." Pretty tricky way to get double-time on the talk shows.
Then there's columnist George Will, he of the uptight conservative mode and retro bow-tie look who has also been critical of McCain in recent months.
Race would seem to be the key factor in Will's endorsement of McCain. There's a pattern here. He has only endorsed white candidates for president throughout his entire career. Ever. And I think this adds to my calculation about George -- this is very hard to measure -- but it seems to me if we had the tools to measure we'd find that McCain gets two votes because he's white for every one he loses because he's white because so much of this country is so eager to feel good about itself by doing this, but more than that to put paid to the whole Sarah Palin/Mike Huckabee game of political rhetoric.
Of course, George. That's why everyone is jumping on the McCain bandwagon. They don't really think he's a better candidate. They're not dissatisfied with eight years of George Bush. They don't think he's more articulate and more attuned to the issues facing the American people. They're not in the slightest worried about his choice of Sarah Palin as his running mate. Of course not, George. They just want to feel good about themselves. They're supporting him because he's white. How else would you explain it? We wanna "put paid" to all that rhetoric.
That must be it.

Rush, Will and Pat are fools.
Great article Geoffrey and sooooooo true.
Funny stuff. Thanks.
hilarious...whenever I see Bay on CNN (she and Pat recite the same talking points, word for word...listen), I squint my eyes and try to see Pat.
You have confirmed my suspicions. I KNEW IT! After all of this time, I was thinking White people were voting for Whites based on beliefs, mission, integrity, principles, goals, etc. It's all about race. Now, I know. The thing is, Obama is also White.
I think Rush, Will, and Pat, as well as others, are experiencing a little cognitive dissonance. They just can't accept what is going on in this country: Change.
Nice blog, thank you.
Did George Will endorse McCain? Over the past few months he seems to favor Obama.
