Media May Mock, But Palin A Strong Candidate

Posted: 09/29/08 02:26 AM ET

In West Texas, it is common to meet people with stained teeth. These stains are a medical condition known as dental fluorosis, caused by excessive amounts of fluoride. In the Panhandle cattle town of Hereford, ninety miles from my childhood home, the water supply has long been known to naturally contain unusually high amounts of fluorine.

While few West Texans care about fluoride-stained teeth, the people of Los Angeles or (God forbid) New York City certainly do. Those people do not know, nor do they want to know, about fluorosis. When they behold a West Texas native, sometimes all they see is a goat-roper with rotten teeth.

And there are other issues. Most native West Texans have a distinctive regional accent, which can best be described as a twang. It differs from a Southern accent, which might be called a drawl. In Los Angeles or (God forbid) New York City, some people do not discriminate among accents. All they hear is hick, and they pigeonhole the speaker just as they might sort their recyclables.

To avoid these prejudices, many southerners and westerners have learned to disguise their accents. Such deception is a talent, not within the reach of all. Rumor is that Jimmy Carter worked for years to rid himself of his drawl, with obvious negative results. (For the record, I can hide my twang with aplomb.)

Given the debate this season about experience, where does a voter such as I stand? I will tell you that I put the experience of my father--native Texan, Korean War vet, scholar, man of the people--on par with anyone in this race. That is right: I consider my father competent to preside as president of this nation, especially as compared to this lot.

Believe me: there are plenty of West Texans who feel the same about their own fathers--or mothers. My mother was a math competition champion as a schoolgirl, and was on the vanguard of the two-income family in the 1960's. I was a latchkey kid starting in 1970. Whom do you think knows more about the concerns of working women: Barack Obama, or my mother?

The answer is obvious and not worthy of debate.

And oh boy, does that open a can of worms. Republicans back in the day hated--hated--Hillary Clinton. "Pretty in Pink" talking about the "vast right-wing conspiracy". But then we saw how tough she was during her primary fight against Obama. Many of us gained a newfound respect for the Castoff from Little Rock (that bastard). I can still barely contain my negative emotions about how execrably Hillary was treated by her erstwhile supporters and allies. And may I remind these hypocrites of this itty-bitty tiny eensy-weensy little fact? We have a war to fight.

To finally get to the absence of the Honorable Governor Sarah Palin...

The media mandarins mock her accent. They make sport of her regional characteristics. Take a look at this Palin interview, given just hours before she was announced as the republican vice-presidential pick. Biden schmiden: anyone should fear debating this woman.

If you are going to ignore Palin's obvious political achievements, and instead demand a DNA test to prove the maternity of her own child, please tell me why on Earth should she cooperate with you? Why on Earth should she be complicit with your assassination of her character and her family? Palin advisors to media moguls: go pound sand.

The Honorable Governor Palin has already delivered her natural constituents--the republican base--to John McCain. Anything else she brings is just pure gravy.

Republican pundits used to say of the septuagenarian Reagan, "Just let Reagan be Reagan". They are starting to say the same thing about Palin. The only difference I can discern between the two is this: she ain't a septuagenarian.

As George Will, major conservative, said on This Week last Sunday in response to Governor Palin,- 'represent Joe 6-pack, yes, but let's not replicate Joe 6-pack.' I don't understand this preoccupation with electing someone "just like me". Your mother may understand the pains of working women, but that is not enough to take office and be an effective leader. Let Palin be Palin, yes, but please, keep her out of the White House.

Joe six-pack and proud of it.!

But the Palin-McSame campaign is using rovian doublespeak again:
It actually takes about 48 beers to appreciate the RNC/GOP candidates this year.

All Cletuses and Brandines of America will support Sarah Palin – they can fully relate to her.

I think she is strong on the issue of energy development for Alaska. But what about the other thousand issues that confront the nation today? How do you think she'll do?

MCcain and Palin are a potentially dangerous trio to have as our president/VP. MCcain decends from a family of "Hawks" and has war in his blood. In my opinion his upbringing combined with him being held as a POW for 5 years, has desensitized him about the seriousness of war. He is artificial (no pun intended), closed minded and relies on luck and immoral trickery to accomplish his missions. I feel a touch of sympathy for his running mate Sarah Palin, her naivity towards the corrupt and immoral games the "GOOD OLE BOYS" play in Washington has suckered her into a sitiuation which is clearly over her head. She was used specifically for the purpose to lure Hillary"s women voters. Her desire to be controlling has now caused her to be "controled". "STEP DOWN, GO HOME AND TAKE CARE OF YOUR CHILDREN", they need you more than we do.

The as-yet unrecognized power of Sarah Palin is that she 1) speaks at a very basic level of values and generalities and 2) she repeats these incessantly.

Palin communicates her understanding and her view of national and international issues at a very simple and visceral level, which effectively connects with less educated voters. They also tend to personalize the ridicule she experiences.

Further, studies have shown that you have to repeat things at least six times in order for them to be fully heard. Repetition works, even with lies.

We should be concerned about this when it comes to her debate with Biden. Pit bull stuff.

And both of these techniques would work, if McCain would chose a position and stick to it. He's pivoted so much, I don't see how Palin can affirmatively say anything without contradicting him. This is a huge challenge for someone whose strength is speaking plainly.

bravo ! Perfectly said - i have some of those types in my own family ! Can't even talk to them about anything halfway intelligent - they are already decided because REPUBS believe in life - dems do not (or so their argument stands) Even if they will be so much better off under Obama - no way - they are ready to stand by their man and this unqualified woman.

many of you who complain about those who criticize gov. palin don't seem to understand that there are legitimate concerns. i understand that people such as jon stewart, etc have no real comprehension that average americans like guns for varying reasons -- stewart chided biden for referring to a berretta as a shotgun, because they are handguns. sure, stewart is out of his league -- berretta makes both. however, palin is also out of her league -- the difference is that she's not playing a fake newscaster on a fake comedy newsshow. palin's playing the candidate who may be queen, and that's not funny.

I don't find the sample interview any different than the current interviews we've see with Gibson & Couric. She says the same stupid things in circular, run-on sentences. ".. I also believe that we also have to also drill and also natural gas and also.."

Heck, I wouldn't even have a problem debating this frog, accent or not.

The Republican base--the Jesus vote--does not give a crap about the intellectual demands of that job, or the intellectual qualifications of their candidates, or the complexity of the modern world. Instead of calling the media to task for pointing out the lack of such qualifications in their candidate, it might be more helpful to understand why your west Texans refuse to cultivate a more sophisticated world view. Part of the answer is their leadership wants them to stay ignorant and does all they can to feed it.

The Republicans have done a good job making people think anyone can do that job as long as he pitches horseshoes, chops wood, clears brush, talks tough, and talks Jesus. They've painted anyone who cuts against that image as a wimpy east coast, godless, ivy-league "elite"--ironic as their elites went to the same schools, and G.W's right hand man Rove is an atheist.

A person who thinks humans and dinosaurs co-existed, and that we live on a 6000 year old planet is seriously lacking in the ability to understand how science is done, and we can know what we know. We don't need another global warming denier in the white house. Some essays to your West Texans about why Obama would be better for their long term interests would be helpful than rants against the elites in the media. I don't think those folks read the New York Times, or The Nation et al.

And no one decides someone is stupid because they have a Noo Yawk accent??? Fageddaboudit.

Those who parody Sarah Palin use her accent as a tool to imitate her. It's a tool that's used by every comedian especially Tracy Ullman who seems to do every US dialect so well. Don't get so sensitive about Sarah. She can take care of herself Did you write article when comedians parodied Hillary Clinton. Would you do so if Palin looked like Madelyn Albright or Janet Reno.

Sometimes I think Palin's pretty face speaks louder than her words - no matter what accent is used.

And by the way, fluoride added to water supplies is a very stoopid idea without an accent.

Science shows that fluoride added to water supplies is ineffective, harmful and a waste of money.

A noted Hereford dentist discovered in the 1950's that Hereford's lower tooth decay wasn't a result of high levels of fluoride in their water supply (which did discolor their teeth) but it was from the healthy foods they ate See 1954 letter from dentist George Heard here:: http://www.curetoothdecay.com/Dentistry/Fluoride.htm
