Everything You Ever Wanted To Ask An Airline Gate Agent

Posted: 10/27/11 10:00 AM ET

Airfarewatchdog.com asked airline gate agents to tell us about their jobs -- what they love about it, what they hate about it and whether, in fact, you have a better chance of sitting in first class if you're dressed well. We learned a lot and hope you will too.

What are you typing on your computer so ferociously when I ask to change my seat?

Our computer systems are so archaic that everything we do requires a cumbersome series of codes. It isn't just a point and click system. Even a seat change is a long, drawn out process.

Why can't you hold the plane for late connecting passengers?

It's not really up to us. We have to get the flight out on time. If it's more than 15 minutes late, we're held accountable unless there is a weather or mechanical delay.

Our computer system shows us all of the connecting passengers, including those who have a chance to make the flight. As much as we want to, delaying the flight for a few connecting passengers has a trickle-down effect. Your aircraft will connect with or become another flight, and your crew is mandated by the FAA to only work a maximum amount of hours before taking a rest break.

If we delay the flight, they could time out and we would have to cancel. It's like a series of dominoes so we have to be very careful the whole operation stays on time.

What do you hate most about your job?

Cost cutting has reduced the level of staffing at the airport, and I am typically working the gate by myself. This means that I have to meet the inbound aircraft, assist with unaccompanied minors and wheelchairs, work the counter to answer passenger questions for the new flight, board families and wheelchair passengers for the new flight, clear standbys and upgrades and board the plane alone, all within 30-45 minutes sometimes. It is very stressful!

What do you love most about your job?

The airport environment is a very hectic place, and the job is fast-paced and intense. There is literally no time even to take a bathroom break. But, I love the challenge that each flight poses. There are so many variables involved, but at the end of the day, it is an exciting process. I love meeting so many different people. You really learn a lot about humanity!

Do you know who the federal air marshals are?

Yes, we call them FAMs. We typically board them first, and they are almost always sitting in an aisle seat in first class. They are not on every flight though. The flight crew's typically informed who the FAM is, but passengers can easily spot them since they're usually sitting on the plane already when everyone else boards. Kind of defeats the purpose in my opinion, but that is the procedure.

Is it true that you can upgrade people at your own whim? Is it important to dress nicely if we want a free upgrade?

On an oversold flight, we can definitely move someone up to first class, and yes, the better dressed you are, the more likely you are to nab that seat. I am not going to put someone wearing flip flops up front with our best customers. It also pays to be courteous, to smile, and to be patient. I would rather give the better seat to someone who makes my life easier.

If the flight isn't oversold, it's a different matter. In the old days, we had a lot more leeway on who we could upgrade. These days, the process is entirely automated, and the computer dictates who gets upgraded based on elite status, fare paid and if there have been other travel disruptions during your journey. We just assign the seats once we clear upgrades off of the standby list. Even if we did manipulate the system, we are constantly audited so would have to explain why we upgraded someone for no reason.

Do you know how much each person paid for their ticket?

Yes, we can see everything about your ticket. How much you paid for it, where you bought it and when you bought it. It's funny because sometimes travelers will say how expensive their ticket was when they bought it or how they had originally booked first class in an effort to snag an upgrade, but we can see all the details. If we click through enough screens, we can see how many miles you have, when your birthday is and even your address.

Is there something you wished travelers would do better?

Definitely! Please, please, please do not crowd around the gate 30 minutes before boarding. People will just stand there and stare at me waiting to board. It's not like this is the day after Thanksgiving at some incredible sale. Yes, overhead space is at a premium, but you are just slowing down the boarding process for everyone by blocking the pathway. Stand to the side so that people can board when their row number is called. Until then, stay seated or out of the way. Your fellow passengers will appreciate your kindness.

What would you have asked an airline gate agent? Tell us and we'll put it to them in a future installment.

I love how misinformation is written into stories and people actually believe them. Air marshalls are not seated first nor are they in first class. Yes, they do have aisle seats because DUH, they need to get to the aisle as fast as possible. They actually sit in "coach" away from the emergency exits so they can see clearly who's coming and going. The giveaway is what they're wearing, not where they're sitting. and no I won't tell you what the little item is.

As for the gate steward, yes they're often alone there for the reasons mentioned. If you want to get on their good side and have a 99% chance of snagging an upgrade, bring them an ice cold bottled water and some quick bite foods like cut fruit or crackers or, if it's around 2-3pm, trail mix. Tell them it's a small token of thanks for everything they do, then quietly move away. I often do this when I travel and it's landed me plenty of upgrades and freebies.

You sound like you're "in the know" about FAM's. Is that little item they have on a nifty little star badge on with a ring around it and emblazoned with "United States Air Marshall" on it? Just wondering...

Alot of this sounds like bickering about their job in general. PLus does it seem SMART to be giving hints on how to 'spot' an air marshal? Especially considering they are placed there 'as sleepers' in case someone does try to take the plane and if the hijackers KNOW who is a threat dont you think they'd go for THEM first???? Seems like someone needs to stop spilling info they shouldn't like that which could keep people safe........

Am I the only one that thinks telling people how to tell who the Air Marshals are,or if they are on a flight, is a bad idea? Kind of defeats the purpose does'nt it? I know lets see if kepping that info confidential makes a diffrence. smh

When traveling enjoy the experience. Allow yourself plenty of time. Remain calm and face the inevitable delays and tribulations with patience and resignation. Read a book, strike up a conversation or watch the people. Seasoned travelers know that the voyage is the best part, not the arrival.

I used to work for an airline, until I was forced to retire due to accident which left me disable. I know exactly the stress and fast pace life of a ticket/gate agent. The hassles passengers gives when fights delayed due to weather or mechanical. As for upgrading passengers, back when I was working, yes, we did upgrade all the time. I'm sure now a days, some of it is the same, some things changed, and also depends on airline. And yes, by reading a ticket, they know exactly how much you paid. What always got me was people buying cheap tickets from online agents that buys them in bulk, (priceline, travelocity, etc) and passengers wanting to change their flights but we couldn't do anything about it, for there are such high restrictions on tickets, and these online places paid only 15 or 20.00 for each ticket, but the passenger paid 300.00. On the ticket, it listed the bulk price paid, not what the passenger paid. So, asking for a refund, all we could refund was what was on ticket. And the agents have not control over the weather, so don't blame them when flight is delayed.

Doesn't sound like "It kind of defeats the purpose" to me!

The only thing I ever asked an airline gate agent, when I was single, was for their telephone number. One very cute agent in Newark, NJ liked my silk Mickey Mouse tie. On my return trip, I gave it to her. "No ties attached"

I've never known an FMA who carried their gun "there!" Personally I just look for the guy wearing a coat and tie who's sitting among people in flip-flops and luau shirts; who doesn't eat or drink, or lower their seat-back tray.

FMAs don't wear coats & ties. They're dressed to blend in. Quite a few passengers don't lower their trays nor drink or eat on a flight. FMA do often drink, but it's bottled water or coffee. And not all FMAs are men....

Question: "Do you know who the federal air marshals are?" This is the serious problem with the media, assisting terrorists anyway they can. I mean really, what good does this question serve exempt weaken airline security.

Let someone try to mess with a flight or crew nowadays and the uprising passengers will kick their butts! This past week the passengers nabbed a dude trying to mess with an exit door during flight. Remember flight 93...
02:15 AM on 10/29/2011
the 2 passengers you speak of were 2 JERSEY CITY NEW JERSEY POLICE OFFICERS who had takin time off to fly to a brother officers( from the same department ) wedding

the person trying to "MESS" with the door was another passenger who was having a :PANIC ATTACK

they restrained and controled the passenger and turned him over to the FBI in the city they landed in . THE FBI did NOT arrest the man he was let go

Certain air routes are paid for by airlines, that is why they don't hold flights. I once saw a group of women in Toronto at the duty free store, they were milling around then cleared preclearance, in about half an hour they came back and said they missed their flight and now would have to stay over night in Miami. I said I saw you ladies in duty free, their reply, we thought they would hold the flight for us.
