Have the Teachings of Ramadan Fallen on Deaf Ears?

Posted: 08/21/2012 11:48 am

The recent events leading up to the arrest of an 11-year-old girl under Pakistan's blasphemy law are unclear: A young Christian girl thought to be suffering from Down Syndrome was arrested along with her mother for allegedly using old papers found in the garbage to light a fire. These old pieces of paper may have come from the Holy Quran or a religious text used to teach children about the Quran. In either case, what is clear is that when word reached local villagers, angry mob of hundreds surrounded the girl's home, threatening to burn her alive. This mob seems to have been nothing less than violent, some reports say that the girl may have been beaten, causing Pakistani authorities to swiftly arrest the young girl under blasphemy charges along with her mother for "protection" and hold them in the local jail, until a ruling is made.

Setting aside any restraints of logic, this angry mob of Muslims in Pakistan seems to have failed at learning the lessons of Ramadan. The very observance of which teaches one to look inward by reflecting on patience, perseverance, forgiveness, understanding, mercy, compassion and kindness. It is a shame that at the very end of such a holy month, these people have demonstrated their ignorance for their religion and it's teachings in such a vile manner.

While it may be the goal of self-serving community leaders, governments and clerics to promote such false and poor image of Islam; Muslims around the world can no longer ignore such abominable behavior from other Muslims, ignorant or not, in the name of Islam. Unless the Global Muslim community as a whole speaks out and holds these so called Islamic countries accountable for misrepresenting our religion, these terrible things will not seize from happening. If Muslims want to change the Status of Islam around the world we need to begin by looking inward.

God says, "show forgiveness, speak for justice and avoid the ignorant" (7:199).

The Quran teaches us to balance our obligations and prohibitions through good conduct, sincerity, honesty, and integrity so that justice can prevail. According to the Quran, justice is essential for peace and peace is essential for human development: God tells us that only when we are just can we exercise our human rights in any society. Therefore, shouldn't the first order of business for the Pakistani authorities have been to arrest the people who created this chaos and those who beat and attacked the girl, threatening to burn her alive?

In light of the actions from the past and the present alike, it is evident that nations like Pakistan are failing there people; lessons from the Quran and life of Prophet which exemplify forgiveness, patience, justice and dignity are being misconstrued by promoting archaic cultural practices rather than Islamic principles as the Word of God.

What good is accusing others of blasphemy when the accusers themselves are in contempt of it?

The Prophet Muhammad (PBH) said, "He will not enter paradise whose neighbor is not secure from his wrongful conduct" (Muslim, 1992: 15).

Muslims must view these unfortunate situations as opportunities to inspire action and promote change by working together in establishing a moral code that protects the innocent -- Muslims and non-Muslims -- from all wrongful acts that are inaccurately justified in the name of religion. We must do more to end the evil of ignorance and promote education for the sake of humanity.

What is the point of protecting sacred text when we fail to learn from it?

I agree with the writers comments about the 'shocking silence' from muslim leaders about this injustice and it applies also to so many other shocking stories we hear about today. Her Quran quotes are also very poignant. Bravo to Ms. Salam for her honest insightful comments. She should have a larger platform and be given a louder voice in the press. She is a TRUE leader and someone we all need to hear more from.

Bravo for this:

"Muslims around the world can no longer ignore such abominable behavior from other Muslims, ignorant or not, in the name of Islam."

The silence of Muslims thus far has been shocking. I hope your message is heard.

These discussions are all wrong; ISLAM does not permit discussions and EVERYTHING is blasphemy. This is why I escaped when I could. I grew up in a progressive muslim family and outside the house, no one was allowed to discuss anything. So, without freedom of speech, how do you educate muslims to come to this century. Wipe out Saudi Arabia, inch to inch, from the face of this earth and everything will come to place over time.

It is totally wrong to mix national traditions or points of view with the religion. Paskistani's or Indians or Srilankans, Afghans. and Bangaldeshis may have the same or similar root so similar traditions apply like in TURKIC tribes you will find same traditions in KZYL , TUVA and Konya Turkey... BUT it is the fault of the high ranking Islamic leaders....they mixed up because they themselves did not study it...If they were graduated from Islamic & Religious Faculties with proper degrees it would have helped...but a MADRASA is not a shool to open the eyes of peoples....

I am against the blasphemy law in Pakistan, and I'm against the way it is being implemented. However, let's be very clear on this, these are Pakistan's laws and it's an internal problem. Let them sort it out. Blasphemy against the prophet of Islam is a violation of Pakistan's laws. The overwhelming majority of Pakistanis want a law against blasphemy.

But let me add that I find it more than ironic that citizens of a country that bombs Pakistan day in and day out and kill thousands of innocent Pakistanis, have the nerve to lecture them on tolerance and non-violence. The same Americans who will spend many a tear (rightfully so) about the treatment of a poor Pakistani girl will not bat an eyelid and turn the other way when they read *every day* that drones have killed innocent Pakistanis.

What lessons have Americans learnt from Christ? The deaths of 3,000 innocent Americans has been paid back with the death of 100,000+ muslims in Afghanistan, Iraq and Pakistan. Are these the lessons the Bible teaches?
06:10 AM on 09/04/2012
so according to you it is ok for her to be killed because the christians in america have supported their government wars in those countries which have resulted in the deaths of 100,000+ muslims?

Read my comment carefully, thanks.

Honestly this culture of hatred that has plagued South Asia is something that needs to be addressed altogether. For one many Muslim Pakistani would associate Christianity with the drones falling on top of their heads, and so the hatred for Christian minorities in Pakistan is pretty bad. However this region, were being of a certain skin tone (too dark) automatically makes you a slave, or a girl killed because of being just that. This is not a Muslim thing as Christians and Muslims in other parts of the world have been living with each other peacefully as one...even with political turmoil have vowed to protect each other. South Asia has always been a place were moderation is non-existent, in every almost every aspect.

Your better off lecturing Pakistan in particular about how this culture of hatred needs to go.
06:15 AM on 09/04/2012
so according to you muslims and christians in other parts of the worldhave been living with each other peacefully as one, which other parts of the world are you talking about? Egypt? Indonesia? Iraq? where?
07:43 AM on 08/22/2012
There is no such thing as a sacred text.
12:30 AM on 08/22/2012
So the guy who tells her to go back to Pakistan gets a pass, the comment with a perfectly civil suggestion as to standards of evidence and the true lessons of religion gets the ax? I didn't call anyone ignorant, did I? I didn't insult Muslims, I stated a fact. There are no holy books, and that's the only relevant lesson here.
12:13 AM on 08/22/2012
No, the teachings of Ramadan have fallen on dead Muslims.

I am sure we all appreciate your defense of Islamic religious brand,
But there are really two Korans, one relatively tolerant and benevolent, and other obsessively concerned with Kufirs, infidels, apostates and conquest and subjugation of others.
The fact is that both of those parts( the benevolent and belligerent) form the Islamic religious canon.
Then there's no need to pretend to be surprised that violence and peace, charity and intolerance co-exist in Islam and its followers.

Where did you get that idea? there is only one Quran-Kerim.....That is the only book has not been changed by humans.......
06:20 AM on 09/04/2012
where did you get the idea that the Koran has not been changed by humans?

did you not know the history of your own religion?

the was never a Koran at the time of the prophet, it was codified at least two centuries after his death by Uthman who destroyed by burning the other versions, so how did he know his version was the correct one?
11:17 PM on 08/21/2012
Yes, when will we learn the lessons of Ramadan? When will learn to stop "Setting aside any restraints of logic"? When will we learn to trust our senses and to believe only that for which we have evidence? When will we learn that books aren't holy? How about it Ghazala?

Respect to humanity is utter most in any religion. What is Pakistan showing to the world they have no tolerance, if they could support the citizens in the right direction of building the nation and eradicating poverty that would work in their favour. Instead of punishing innocent child who has no clue why she is punished.................................................................................I

It's so easy for Westerners to get all overwhelmed in their self-righteousness. Let me point out to you that while this blasphemy case is heinous and I pray for the poor girl, the actions of western governments are far more corrosive, bloody and violent than anything Pakistan has ever done.
06:23 AM on 09/04/2012
in case you didn't know, the article has nothing to do with western governments being "more corrosive, bloody and violent" but it's about a little girl being incarcerated for allegedly tearing up pages of the Koran
