Smartphones Are Becoming Danger Devices

Posted: 06/11/2012 12:05 pm

Smartphones are an integral part of our society. Gone are the days when a phone was simply a device used to make calls. Nowadays, the lively smartphone can connect to the Internet, send and receive text messages, download and run custom apps, and even play and record videos.
But with this increased power and benefit, the smartphone has brought about new downsides and dangers to modern life.

There is a sharp increase in smartphone-related accidents and deaths, due to people using the powerful technology at the wrong place and at the wrong time.

Look around you the next time you're in traffic. How many drivers are gazing down at a phone while driving? How many people are holding their phones up to their ears? How many others are typing away on their phones while texting? How about people who are looking up driving directions while going 60 miles per hour?

In my own daily commute along Northern California's Highway 101, I pass by at least five accidents each day, all rear-enders, all most certainly caused by someone being on their phone.

In a recent court case, an 18-year-old Massachusetts man will spend a year in prison for killing a father of three in a car accident that occurred because he was texting behind the wheel, a judge said. Though some might consider this sentence harsh, many would argue that it's about time someone was punished. All too often, we see people using their smartphones when they should be concentrating on more important things.

Looking beyond drivers, we should look further out into public transportation. Bus drivers, train engineers, ferry operators, and even airline pilots -- people who hold tens and hundreds of lives in their hands, texting or talking away on their smartphones. How many of these stories have we seen on TV? We see the issue, we shake our heads, and we do the same exact thing.

Everyone understands the amazing technology that is the modern smartphone. A device that fits into a pocket or purse, with the power of a desktop computer.

I invite you to share this blog with family and friends. The time has come for use to recognize and acknowledge the dangers inherent with smartphone use. You could end up saving a life.

We can imagine the possibilities that smartphones bring us, yet nowadays we must also fear the dangerous possibilities.

Keep this in mind the next time you consider reaching down for that buzzing device on the seat or console next to you...

It can wait...
