French Women Don't Wear Shorts

What's Your Reaction:

For many Parisians who saw pictures of Michelle Obama stepping off Air Force One last week in a pair of green cotton shorts, the first thought that came to mind was: Carla Bruni would never wear that.

Even on a burning August day, the French First Lady wouldn't be caught dead in something as "unchic as shorts. She wouldn't want to waste a moment of her life being frumpy," says Elisabeth Fourmont, a Paris-based fashion writer.

Adds Coline Choay, a representative for the French designer Altuzarra, "it would be a big non-non."

French women are obsessed with looking sexy and feminine -- it's inscribed in their DNA and probably also somewhere in the Napoleonic Code -- and shorts, especially the boxy, mid-thigh kind Mrs. Obama sported for a visit to the Grand Canyon, don't have much allure.

For the French, perhaps the biggest problem with "les shorts" is their American origin. Short pants, worn by young boys throughout Europe in the nineteenth century, were adopted by American sportswear designers in the 1940s and became a popular warm weather look for U.S. women and men.

That's reason enough for the French to disdain them. Our Gaulic frenemies believe they are superior to us Americans in all things sartorial (not to mention all things culinary, oenophilic and diplomatic), and they've got a point.

In France, clothes are never just clothes. They're a social force. Behind Paris fashion is a way of life, bolstered by a tradition of literature and art. In the paintings of David and Renoir, Degas and Vuillard, in the novels of Balzac and Proust, clothes are clues to character and social currents. In a deep way fashion is part of the civilization of France.

No wonder that for the past 300 years the French have been so reluctant to concede even a soupçon of style authority to America. Still, the French remain fascinated by us and are unable to resist the most potent elements of U.S. pop culture.

Blue jeans, which started on our side of the Atlantic, have become a staple of the chic Parisian's casual wardrobe. This summer, one of the biggest fashion trends among Parisian girls has been blue jean short shorts. "It's very Versailles," meaning it's the height of chic, notes Alexandra Schmitt, a fashion and beauty marketing executive in Paris. Les desmoiselles, though, have made the style their own -- pairing their shorts with sexy fitted jackets and little suede booties with kitten heels, and, on cooler days, tights.

Similarly, a popular look among the younger attendees at last winter's Paris Fashion Week was leather short shorts and thigh high boots. Like this summer's blue jean shorts, it was a very pulled together look -- "the new mini," as Choay notes.

These styles are not meant to be comfortable, which to Americans is the whole point of shorts. "I hear the comfort excuse all the time from American" women sagging in their shapeless Bermudas, says Fourmont. "And I don't buy it. Not a lot of thought has gone into it. You can be just as comfortable in a sundress."

Part of the problem, Fourmont believes, is that American women are too influenced by what their daughters wear. "They like to go shopping with their kids. But just because the moms can fit into a pair of Abercrombie shorts, doesn't mean that it's appropriate for them."

What is appropriate, of course, is at the heart of the uproar last week over Michelle Obama's shorts. The First Lady has been bending and breaking the rules over what is correct attire for her position since the day her husband took office.

From the baring of her well-toned arms at official functions and her favoring of young, immigrant designers over the big guns of U.S. fashion, to her sporting a cardigan to meet Britain's Queen Elizabeth, Mrs. Obama has shown a forceful fashion independence.

She also seems acutely aware of the image she projects with her clothes. For example, when she donned a humble J. Crew outfit at the start of the G20 Summit in Europe last spring, it signaled her sympathy with the world's economic woes.

So, what was she saying by dressing like her daughters in shorts and sneakers as she disembarked from Air Force One? That she's an unpretentious mom? That she's got more important things to think about than clothes?

It was 104 degrees at the Grand Canyon, and maybe she just wanted to be comfortable. Perhaps she forgot for a while that a posse of photographers would be lying in wait, as they always are wherever she goes, to capture her shorts on film. Perhaps for one plane ride, she had a rare moment of peace.

Hmm...interesting that Michelle Obama is INDEED not Carla Bruni with all that implies. [As far as we know MO has never had an affair with a married rock star, recorded pop songs, said that she is "bored with monogamy" and is about to star in Woody Allen's next film.] But alas c'est la vie. Michelle Obama is many things to many people but she is a wife, mother, daughter and is, most importantly, her own person. With that she and can wear whatever the heck she wishes.

to each his/her own.

i have to say this though. american tourists stand out anywhere they go, with their stonewashed jeans, fanny pack and white trainers and i must say generally overweight appearance.

the french otoh are still chic even in their effort to be comfortable. there was a time when they'd wear floral pencil cut skirts with colored trainers. comfy and chic.

the italians are the best though. the french are chic but the italians are avante garde. cutting edge even when touring.

This article isn't quoting regular French women. It's quoting fashion designers who have a financial interest in MO wearing exactly what they tell her to. It's like a sugar plantation telling everyone we should all eat more sugar. It needs to be taken with a grain of salt. I personally hope this article succeeds in making more women show up at the grand canyon in sundresses. Then I can book a ticket and watch everyone looking ridiculous while trying to hold their dresses down in whipping wind, or better yet riding a donkeys! What a laugh!

oops, riding doneys :)

America has a whole lot more regular Moms and ordinary everyday American women than we have New York fashion templates. Most of us know exactly why Michelle was wearing shorts while visiting the Grand Canyon with her children in 104 degree heat. She looked as American as Apple Pie and hot dogs----------which French fashion models also wouldn't eat. We love our Michelle. She's a great wife and mother and she's regular folks. She never puts on airs. Even when she's fancy for public events she still treats people with the same lovely friendliness that she shares wherever she goes. Michelle always knows who she is and that person is never phony. We love our Michelle and all the rest of her family too; including Bo!

Rich French women older do not wear shorts....There was some mention of the younger French women wearing short shorts....Now tell me, does that include on vacation? Or do the French not have pictures taken of them when they are on vacation?

Can you believe last year that Bush gave Sarkozy a HOT DOG? No wonder the French look down on us....a hot dog? Do you know that the FRENCH DO NOT HAVE GULF War Syndrome, because they did not give their soldiers immunizations with SQALENE in them? That is an adjunct and it may be in the SWINE FLU shots this time around....

Ok, France, we get it. We as American's ain't as sophisticated as you French. Well, the truth be told, Carla Bruni is a model, our First "LADY" is a lawyer with other more important things on her mind than her clothes and the names printed on them. Our Michelle Obama also has children which Ms. Bruni does not. So go at it, Ms. Bruni spend all your time and money on pretentious clothing while we Americans have much better things to do and other things to spend our money on (SUCH AS HEALTHCARE)....

French have already the best healthcare. I though the US spend their money on wars

the BEST healthcare AND 6 SIX weeks of vacation so they can spend time with their families and relax and eat VERY VERY WELL...

My word, aren't we touchy.
Carla Bruni does have one child, for the record.
11:33 AM on 09/01/2009
I was about to add that, before I read your post. She does have a child, and she's also a successful singer-songwriter, not "just" a model. Why does it have to be a competition? Both are young, beautiful, successful, fashionable women. One is French (well Italian and French), and dresses in a French style, and one is American and dresses in an American style. So what?

Hmmm. Grand Canyon sight seeing = hot, stumbly, and critters. Think I'll wear a skirt so that should I trip and fall I'll be nicely exposed. Or, should a flying or crawling critter pass the boundry of my skirt's hemline I can inelegantly flail away as it stings me in places I do not want to be stung.

Hmmm. On second thought, I'll wear a pair of shorts.

Maybe they don't wear shorts because they don't shave?

Just a thought!

They don't wear shorts because light dresses are way more feminine. Shorts are for children unless you are participating in sports.
06:24 PM on 08/30/2009
Shorts are for people with nice legs. Perhaps thats why French women don't wear them. They have can kl es.

Truly when I lived in France, I never saw a French woman- whether in Paris or in the country wearing shorts- not even working in the garden- but what I DID see was a LOT of women without bathing suit tops who would have done well to have had some support for those boobs!

I personally was so uncomfortable in jeans out in province - especially Marseilles that I brought a skirt- French men ogle something terrible!

Vive la difference!

To reduce the miracle that is Michelle Obama, with all that she is and has to offer, to a discussion of whether she should wear shorts in hot weather on her own vacation is beyond shallow. It makes pointlessness look like an achievement.

If you insist on defining a woman by her clothes instead of her being, you're probably just as likely to define her by her husband, too. Michelle is married to Barack Obama. Carla Bruni is married to Sarkozy.

Any questions?

Yeah, just one question:

If I pick Bruni, can I still live in the US?

Oh, another questions, if you please:

Is this the Style section, or the digital-clubhouse for the Sisterhood of the Angry Pantsuits?
12:59 PM on 08/30/2009
Ha! Well said.

Carla Bruni can serve soup (as publicised in Vanity Fair) to her husband in couture whilst discussing the threat of burquinis to their culture, race riots in the streets of Paris, the latest shots of her in underwear that have resurfaced and her latest "gig". How can Michelle Obama compete with that? LOL.

Obama doesn't have to compete with anyone. They compete with her. Why must people always pit women against one another anyway? When in France look feminine, when in the U.S. where shorts when it hot. I was at the Grand Canyon the same day as the Obama's, it was hot, muggy and windy, shorts were comfortable and wearing a skirt would have risked exposure. Trust when at the Grand Canyon you want to hold onto the rail not your skirt.

Like I commented in a pervious post. There was nothing wrong with the shorts. If people want to nitpick over something why not talk about the size too small shirt she put with them or the fact that the shorts were all cruppled up and not pressed. But the shorts themselves were fine.
