We asked MAC senior artist Cynthia Rivas how to keep lipstick from...

1....getting all over your teeth:
After applying, form an O with your mouth. "Put an index finger through and pull out to remove excess color from middle of lips," says Rivas.

2...feathering:
Use a lip primer first, going slightly outside your natural lip line. Wait a few seconds to let it set, then apply lip liner and color. "The primer acts like an adhesive, helping lip color stay in place," says Rivas. Try MAC Prep + Prime Lip ($16.50, nordstrom.com).

3...fading:
Lightly dust lips with loose powder before swiping on color. Matte formulas stay put better, but if you're going creamy, Rivas suggests setting color with a powder blush in the same shade.
