Piero Fornasetti (1913 - 1988) was a genius. The prolific Italian artist was a sculptor, an interior decorator and designer of dreams. I first fell in love with his products while working at Barneys New York.
Fornasetti's most famous production line "Tema e Variazioni" (Theme and Variations) was a collection of plates featuring the face of Italian opera diva Lina Cavalieri considered by many to be the "world's most beautiful woman" of her day.
Fornasetti designed a set of four plates using her iconic image. Today, there are 350 plates in the series with various manipulations of the same image. The bold black and white plates are both functional and decorative. While they make a fabulous table setting, Fornasetti aficionados would rather see them on display. The plates hung in a grouping turn any small niche into a fabulous focal point. The doe-eyed lady can enliven a kitchen or romance a bedroom.
