So much has been said and written about the outing of former CIA operative Valerie Plame -- and the cast of characters that swirled around it, from Judith Miller to Karl Rove -- that today, on the fifth anniversary of how it all began, it seems proper to quote the first lines of the fateful Joseph C. Wilson IV op-ed in the July 6, 2003 edition of The New York Times:

"Did the Bush administration manipulate intelligence about Saddam Hussein's weapons programs to justify an invasion of Iraq? Based on my experience with the administration in the months leading up to the war, I have little choice but to conclude that some of the intelligence related to Iraq's nuclear weapons program was twisted to exaggerate the Iraqi threat."

Remember its title? "What I Didn't Find in Africa." People in high places paid attention: As we now know, Vice President Cheney marked up a copy of the op-ed from the paper, wondering if the trip to Africa was "ordinarily" done or "did his wife send him on a junket?"

An article about Wilson's Niger trip and views on the WMD threat appeared the same day in The Washington Post, since Wilson was going fully public with an appearance on "Meet the Press."

Things then happened fast. The following day the Bush administration admitted [that accusations included in the president's 2003 State of the Union address had turned out to be inaccurate. At a press conference in Africa, Secretary of State Colin Powell concluded: "There was sufficient evidence floating around at that time that such a statement was not totally outrageous or not to be believed or not to be appropriately used. It's that once we used the statement, and after further analysis, and looking at other estimates we had, and other information that was coming in, it turned out that the basis upon which that statement was made didn't hold up..."

Within another day, Powell's assistant Richard Armitage had provided the first -- but by no means last -- leak to columnist Robert Novak about Wilson's wife Valerie Plame and the CIA.

On July 14, 2003, Novak identified "Wilson's wife" publicly as "an agency operative on weapons of mass destruction" named "Valerie Plame" in his syndicated column. This effectively ended her CIA career.

Plame later testified before Congress: "I found out very early in the morning when my husband came in and dropped the newspaper on the bed and said, 'He did it'.... We had indications in the week prior that Mr. Novak knew my identity and my true employer. And I of course alerted my superiors at the agency, and I was told, don't worry; we'll take care of it. And it was much to our surprise that we read about this July 14th."

Two days after that, David Corn at The Nation suggested that the leak was a crime. Wilson said: "Naming her this way would have compromised every operation, every relationship, every network with which she had been associated in her entire career. This is the stuff of Kim Philby and Aldrich Ames."

Of course, as we learned much later, Cheney's aide, I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby had learned about the Wilson/Plame connection the previous month and would blab about it with numerous officials and journalists such as Judy Miller and Matt Cooper.

He talked to Miller about Plame as early as June 23, 2003. He mentioned her to White House spokesman Ari Fleischer on July 7, 2003. (Libby would claim that he first heard about her from Tim Russert three days after that.) Then Libby chatted about Plame with Karl Rove on July 11, 2003.

Pardon me?

Joe Wilson gets sent by his wife on a cocktail circuit assignment where he asks a few low level Nigerian bureaucrats "Are you SURE there was no yellowcake dealing going on with Iraq?" and he's now the hero of the left. It all begins and ends with cocktail parties when you're a lib. LOL

Plame worked with a CIA front company (Brewster Jennings), a Middle East WMD anti-proliferation group. Their work product neutralized the Neo Con engineered hype just as the 2003 NIE did.

You either knew this or are very uninformed. Which is it?

Cheney, the Cons, the WHIG and others committed treason. Where did you stand again?

It's the LAST paragraph that gets more and more haunting with every year:

"The act of war is the last option of a democracy, taken when there is a grave threat to our national security. More than 200 American soldiers have lost their lives in Iraq already. We have a duty to ensure that their sacrifice came for the right reasons."

The 6th paragraph says it all. Richard Armitage was the leaker. And he is no friend of the Bush administration. Why continue the witch hunt?

And by the way, are there good leaks and bad leaks? What's the difference between whistle-blower and a leak? Oh, that's right; it's however the media wants to frame it.

Just stop it.

Brewster Jennings was the target as much as the N.I.E. was. You really need to either look globally or back down. This was treason, not simply a leak by an alleged dufus. Peddle your jury pool taint elsewhere.

Realization of the P.N.A.C. was the motive behind the outing. Far from witch hunt material. Move on.

No justice, no peace. Conspiracy, treason, murder, theft, and subversion will not be tolerated.

Indict in '09. If Justice falls, so does the country.

Not gonna' happen.

Even if Obama wins the election, the dems will let bush & co just walk away from their crimes in the name of "bipartisanship", just like the Clinton administration did for daddy bush in '93. And the republithugs will do the same to Obama they did to Clinton.

You can already see it with Obama's FISA stand, courting Bill Gates and Colin Powell, "faith based initiatives" and all the other pepublithug light positions Obama's adopting for the general election run.

Some people never learn ... especially if they're elected Democrats.

I agree that Obama is unlikely to investigate in any real way.

The ugly truth is that there is no way the thugs would cooperate in any way with O's legislative agenda if he were to vigorously prosecute BushCo.

Obama has an either/or choice. Legislation or Investigation.

And it honks me off.

I do agree there is politics afoot and much pandering for voting blocks. Please know I do allow for that contingency, but will never close the vigilant eye. My default setting: Country and Constitution.

Never, will I allow obfuscation or neutralization of horrendous crimes against the Constitution to stand. Believe me when I say it is in my blood, both genetically and philosophically.

"Don't Tread On Me" is not a topical, or stylish, or a passing statement lost in time. It is today's most important declaration.

I support Obama because he knows such patriotism is indelible, and because he is our last best hope to resurrect the functional magnificence of stuff worth dying for.

He also has to know, I and many others, are watching carefully.

Then crimes were commited for political gain (and to damage political opponents), one criminal took the heat for the gang of exectutive branch criminal conspirators and was convicted. His sentence was then commuted by the criminal leader in order to cover up the crimes and silence lower level operatives once and for all.

The crimes were successful. The criminals remain at large.

And there was irony this week as well.

From the AP:
******

"The last major remnant of Saddam Hussein's nuclear program _ a huge stockpile of concentrated natural uranium _ reached a Canadian port Saturday to complete a secret U.S. operation that included a two-week airlift from Baghdad and a ship voyage crossing two oceans.

The removal of 550 metric tons of "yellowcake" _ the seed material for higher-grade nuclear enrichment _ was a significant step toward closing the books on Saddam's nuclear legacy. "

All of which was in his inventory prior to the first war and was monitored by the UN at the time of the BushCo fraud that lead to this horrific war.

BushCo was lying thru its teeth with the 16 words. They committed a criminal fraud on the American people and then committed treason in an attempt to cover it up.

Yeah, the stuff he already had and couldn't do anything with before the 1991 war.

Yes, there's plenty of 'irony' here:
,
"And, in a symbolic way, the mission linked the current attempts to stabilize Iraq with some of the high-profile claims about Saddam's weapons capabilities in the buildup to the 2003 invasion."

"Tuwaitha and an adjacent research facility were well known for decades as the centerpiece of Saddam's nuclear efforts.

Israeli warplanes bombed a reactor project at the site in 1981. Later, U.N. inspectors documented and safeguarded the yellowcake, which had been stored in aging drums and containers since before the 1991 Gulf War. There was no evidence of any yellowcake dating from after 1991, the official said."

Ironic, yes. That people still defend this Administration despite its total lack of credibility.
