Excerpts from Rev. Jeremiah Wright Interview with Bill Moyers

digg Share this on Facebook Huffpost - stumble reddit del.ico.us RSS

I've been sent by Bill Moyers' people excerpts from his interview with Rev. Jeremiah Wright, which will air tomorrow night on PBS. This is the first major Wright interview since the Obama "controversy" broke last month.

REVEREND WRIGHT:
The persons who have heard the entire sermon understand the
communication perfectly.

When something is taken like a sound bite for a political purpose and
put constantly over and over again, looped in the face of the public,
that's not a failure to communicate. Those who are doing that are
communicating exactly what they want to do, which is to paint me as some
sort of fanatic or as the learned journalist from the New York Times
called me, a "wackadoodle."

It's to paint me as something: "Something's wrong with me. There's
nothing wrong with this country...for its policies. We're perfect. Our
hands are free. Our hands have no blood on them." That's not a failure
to communicate. The message that is being communicated by the sound
bites is exactly what those pushing those sound bites want to
communicate.

BILL MOYERS:
What do you think they wanted to communicate?

REVEREND WRIGHT:
I think they wanted to communicate that I am unpatriotic, that I am
un-American, that I am filled with hate speech, that I have a cult at
Trinity United Church of Christ. And by the way, guess who goes to his
church, hint, hint, hint? That's what they wanted to communicate.

They know nothing about the church. They know nothing about our prison
ministry. They know nothing about our food ministry. They know nothing
about our senior citizens home. They know nothing about all we try to
do as a church and have tried to do, and still continue to do as a
church that believes what Martin Marty said, that the two worlds have to
be together. And that the gospel of Jesus Christ has to speak to those
worlds, not only in terms of the preached message on a Sunday morning
but in terms of the lived-out ministry throughout the week.

BILL MOYERS:
What did you think when you began to see those very brief sound bites
circulating as they did?

REVEREND WRIGHT:
I felt it was unfair. I felt it was unjust. I felt it was untrue. I
felt for those who were doing that, were doing it for some very devious
reasons.

Excerpt 2

BILL MOYERS:
Did you ever imagine that you would come to personify the black anger
that so many whites fear?

REVEREND WRIGHT:
No. I did not. I've been preaching since I was ordained 41 years ago.
I pointed out to some of the persons in Chicago who are in all of this,
new to them that the stance I took in standing against apartheid along
with our denomination back in the '70s, and putting a "Free South
Africa" sign in front of the church put me at odds with the government.
Our denomination's defense of the Wilmington Ten and Ben Chavis put me
at odds with the establishment. So, being at odds with policies is
nothing new to me.

The blowup and the blowing up of sermons preached 15, seven, six years
ago and now becoming a media event, not the full sermon, but the
snippets from the sermon and sound bite having made me the target of
hatred, yes, that is something very new and something very, very
unsettling.

Excerpt 3

BILL MOYERS:
Here is a man who came to see you 20 years ago. Wanted to know about
the neighborhood. Barack Obama was a skeptic when it came to religion.
He sought you out because he knew you knew about the community. You led
him to the faith.

You performed his wedding ceremony. You baptized his two children. You
were, for 20 years, his spiritual counsel. He has said that. And, yet,
he, in that speech at Philadelphia, had to say some hard things about
you. How did those words...how did it go down with you when you heard
Barack Obama say those things?

REVEREND WRIGHT:
It went down very simply. He's a politician, I'm a pastor. We speak to
two different audiences. And he says what he has to say as a
politician. I say what I have to say as a pastor. But they're two
different worlds.

I do what I do. He does what politicians do. So that what happened in
Philadelphia where he had to respond to the sound bytes, he responded as
a politician.

Excerpt 4

BILL MOYERS:
In the 20 years that you've been his pastor, have you ever heard him
repeat any of your controversial statements as his opinion?

REVEREND WRIGHT:
No. No. No. Absolutely not.

I don't talk to him about politics. And so he had a political event, he
goes out as a politician and says what he has to say as a politician. I
continue to be a pastor who speaks to the people of God about the things
of God.

Oh and that whackadoodle, Pat Robertson who also said we deserved 911.

If it weren't Rev Wright, Clinton would be using any other weapon at hand to knock her opponent out of her way. She really is a monster! Would someone please tell me that she and former President Clinton didn't use Rev. Wright for guidance (marital). That would be the height of hypocrocy. I believe she is a hypocrit so I won't be too surprised if the story is true.

Work it out. The Clintons used Wright for political cover. Wright is a radicalized, bigoted, but POLITICALY CORRECT black preacher. He leads the flog to racism and to supporting the democratic party. This is the politically correct racism that the far left has supported and encouraged for years in the black churches.

Obama went to Wright for POLITICAL SUPPORT. Wright and his political influence was a foundation in Obama's rise to power.

This is the ugly side of Politics, Religion, and Racism on the far left side of the democratic party. This is what you support because you are a "progressive liberal". That's why so many on this board will supports Wrights bigotry and say Wright is right. Even though Obama had to say Wright was wrong all while justifying Wrights racism.

Obama believes this stuff. Obama believes the average whiter person is a racist. Obama believes those in red states are bitter ignorant hicks. This is the "elitist" agenda he embraces and views as "enlightened".

It's all a game to pretend Obama doesn't believe in and support what he actually believes in and supports.

You sound as if you don't understand the game and your part in the game. Your part is to spin for Wright and pretend he's not the bigot he is.

Rev. Wright spoke the truth and if you'd listen to the entire Sermon you'd have a much different opinon. Word of advice take it, or don't take it, when it comes to the Minister's of God, learn to keep our mouth off of them. You can disagree, but remember, believe in God, or not, every man, and woman, will be held to account for every word out of his mouth, Ministers and Pastors first, but every word out of all mans mouths, will be accounted for.

Then why doesn't the church release his entire surmons? And by that I mean ALL the surmons that are OUT THERE.....in it's entirety.

Let us see for ourselves whether the 30 second sound bite that we have seen is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING like he's EVER said before.

Release all his surmons, full length, and let us be the judge.

I don't care if Wright was Obama's pastor or not. I only care about what Obama says about Wright. But you've got to admit that Wright's characterization of Obama's response as merely what politicians do is not helpful to Obama. Wright is too smart not to understand this.

Obama needs to lock up his crazy uncle in the attic.

There's nothing wrong with being called a politician unless you are NOT a politician. Obama IS a politican and a politician has to word his statements very carefully, especially a politician like Obama who is attacked for every word that comes out his mouth. Hillary and McCain can spout off the mouth about anything from running under sniper fire to calling your wife a cunt in public, and it soon becomes a non-issue without delving into their horrible psyches. Wright did understand this and defended Obama as honestly and directly as he could without throwing Obama under the bus. Now commentators are already all over the place trying to blow Wright's comments to start another Obama meltdown in viewers' minds.

I don't have a problem with what Wright said in his sermon, and I don't use Wright's words to judge Barack. But it is a political problem for Obama, and I felt at the time that Obama's initial response, and even his subsequent speech, was insufficient to quell the political damage it might cause. It required classic damage control--something that has become standard conventional wisdom ever since the Tylenol incident: Acknowledge the depth of the problem, apologize sincerely (even if it's not your fault, apologize for the harm or pain or suffering), fix the problem and restore confidence.

The most important thing for a politician to do is to prevent an issue from having "legs." Obama's response to this issue has not helped him minimize the impact it's having. And this issue has legs for Obama.

Why would Obama need to lock him up.

Obama is NOT Wright and Wright is NOT Obama and unless I am mistaken, Obama is running for President.

If we are going to elect by association, then how can Hillary or McCain run for Presidency?

Is MC Cain locking up Hegge and other white clerics?

America does NOT want to look into the mirror of itself....it had slavery, Jim Crow, Segregation, Lynching and CONSTANT and CONSISTENT RACISM......oh I forgot it also has AMENSIA about it's greatest FLAW...because even when the Constitition was written , African Americans were NOT even considered to be people.

Today is no different.....

It is amusing to watch the despicable media turn on Obama -- attempt to do what they attempted to do all along -- see that Clinton gets the nomination so that two despicable warmongerers (Hillary and McCain) will run against each other. After declaring her inevitable and pushing that for a year, now they are developing excuses why Obama, who has won, shouldn't get the nomination.

I watch the same pundits who lied us into Iraq and lie about how we can't get out immediately and safely now -- the same ones who counted Hillary out 2 weeks ago -- suddenly trumpet issues that are utterly irrelevant to the vast majority of Americans -- what Wright said, bittergate, etc. -- as if voters in PA rejected Obama because of those things. These pundits -- Matthews, old bat stupid Margaret Carlson and her namesake stuipid middle aged Tucker Carlson, Moron Joe Scarborough, Pat (the Nazi) Buchanan -- have all of a sudden stated, based upon a state that neighbors Hillary's own state and had a machine loyal to Bill (not Hillary) for decades that went for Hillary by a little under 10 points, after she had been ahead by 20 points that Obama has lost his edge and is danger of losing the nomination.

Wright and bittergate mean nothing to anyone but the lying pundits and Obama appears inevitable.

I think you will find in the GENERAL ELECTION those of us Obama looks down upon, average "racist" whites who go to church, or own a gun, or want to have secure boarders believe that "bittergate" is important and will vote accordingly.

Bitter-Gate informed us, just as Wright informs us, who Obama really is. Obama defined himself as change. But his life is telling us something different. It's saying: Rabid, politically correct, far left winger.

As usual, the main stream media and every news reporter is too darn lazy to actually get the meaning of what Obama actually said. He said that because, for decades, politicians have promised economic relief to the middle-class and the poor, and have never delivered, that is why the voters have given up voting to improve their economic lot. Instead, the republicans and now Hillary, are using wedge issues such as guns, religion, gay rights and immigration, to get voters to vote their way. Then, once in power, they don't do anything to help the economic position of those who need it.....they don't even overturn Roe V Wade as the right wing SAYS they want, because they don't really want to do that.....it would take away their emotional votes next time! In other words, Obama was actually totally in complete understanding with the middle-class, not being "elitist" at all. He was saying to stop letting them use the voters with the wedge issues. He was saying he WILL help their economic standing! The press doesn't want that.....what will they have to argue about? The rich don't want that.....no more ripping off the people....so, what do they do? They distort what Obama said and idiots fall for the distortion!

You make the mistake of believing that Obama has actually won it. He's in the homestretch, but he hasn't crossed the finish line. There are so many appropriate sayings here:

As Yogi Bera said, "it aint over 'til it's over."

"Don't count your chickens until they're hatched."

and the most important, "It's always your friends who do you in."

Thanks, Uncle Wright.

No, you weren't listening to what many of us have said. Why do you think so republicans were for Obama? Why do you think the republican monorators did not ask tough questions of Obama but grilled Hillary and made it easy for Obama to hit her in the debates?? They think they can beat him. Some of us fell for it hock, line and sinker. Even in Pa. there were some republican journalists and talk show people that thought that Obama should be the democratic choice. Now election is over and they are once again in McCains court. They picked our candidate for us or at least they almost have. We have several states to vote yet.
Now our paper is endorsing McCain because of his great experience, better than our two candidates. They constantly are talking about what a great war hero he was. My brother in law is thrilled that Obama looks like he might make it. If that happens he the democrats will have their third loss at the white house.

and if you didn't know HIV has been proven to be a virus found within the primate (monkey) family that jumped to the human species over 150 years ago in Africa (much like the Bird Flu, which scientists are very concerned will also 'jump' to the human species). It is a PASTOR's job to speak the truth, no matter how difficult or politically incorrect.

It is the POLITICIAN’s job to consider and weigh issues, concerns, goals, and agendas of their diverse constituencies, and to act in the best interests of the whole, not their own personal preferences or agendas. That's why it's so difficult.

Don’t be afraid of the truth. It may be difficult at first, but it will win in the end.

Who cares about Rev. Wright, give a break, he’s not running! No wonder our country is so messed up, people are focused on the wrong things, look at what “Bush” has done to us, we are broke, at war, and our reputation around the world has been severely damaged. That’s what we should be discussing how George W Bush has ruined our lives, our country and our trust in government .

You are absolutely correct Amanda. I want to put an idea out that nobody has mentioned... Since Rev Wright seems to be friends with the Clintons (he was called to the White House to counsel the Clintons during the Monica Mess" What makes you think that Rev Wright hasn't been paid off or promised something by the Clintons by talking and saying the things he has said in this interview and he could have been the one who leaked his own sermons to the media... NOT SUCH A FAR FETCHED IDEA... The Rev was put in place to pull Obama down. Now I am an older Black woman but the idea just crossed my mind.. ANYBODY ELSE THINK OF THIS?

Nope you're way off. Let it go.

You obviously don't know Rev. Wright, or you'd know that nobody could pay him off. Certainly not the Clintons. He's very proud of Barack and understands the politics of an election. And Obama isn't afraid or ashamed of the truth of Rev. Wright, his ministry or the church. He very proudly mentioned them in his autobiography, Dreams From My Father that he wrote in 1995.

Nope, it's just the usual media spin and voters' lack of access to information that we've been subjected to for so very long.

I think your assessment is on point, Amanda. I've read Rev. Wright's bio and there's no way a man that informed could be that ignorant. Especially if he's supposed to be such a close friend and mentor to Barack Obama. I think someones trying to serve up a very nasty batch of koolaid'.
Something's either very right or wrong about Rev. Wright.

No. Absolutely not. It is extremely far-fetched. IF you knew Dr. Wright you would understand that he is a man of integrity. He would have put Bill and Hillary (or anybody else) on blast for even suggesting such a thing. Besides, why would he intentionally try to harm a member of his flock? I'll be watching the Moyer's interview on PBS tomorrow--I hope you will as well. Maybe a little more information about Dr. Wright will disabuse you of such an inane notion.

No. I am an older Black Man. And don't agree with Wright's rhectoric in making his point but most of his points are valid. He disagrees with some policies of the government. I don't have to agree with the all policies of our government to prove my loyalty. That's why this is America and not China. I am not quite as cyncical as Wright is on the HIV stuff, but I understand the origin of the cynicism. Neither am I as cynical as you as to why Reverend Wright is speaking at this time. While this may not be helpful to Obama because he was trying to turn the page and move on I don't believe the Reverend is out to do Obama harm. I think he feels he remained silent for adequate period of time. He is preacher and preachers preach. He thinks the media has not been fair. I agree. I have taken the time to go to TUCC website and YouTube to view more than snipets of the church and this man and come away concluding that there is more to this man and this church than presented through the media or what stevelalign have said. This country has had policies and practices of supporting countries and dictators which have come back to haunt us, the Shah of Iran, Botha in South Africa, Batista in Cuba, Saddam Hussein in Iraq. The CIA calls it "Blowback". Reverend Wright says "Your Chickens Have Come home To Roast".

I agree. Who cares about Rev. Wright. I agree with some of his opinions, disagree with others. I'm sure he is a good man and has never insighted anyone to do harm to anyone else, and according to the community work of his church, he has advocated a lot of good.

If we judge Obama for everything this man says, than we have to apply the same standard to all the other candidates ... and dig into all their questionable relationships.. and there are questionable relationships for Hilary and John McCain. If we don't apply the same standard to all the other candidates then I am left to believe that this is race baiting, rejecting a candidate of color by appealing to people's bigotry, ignorance and fear. If Hillary and her surrogates dare to participate in this she has disqualified herself as a Democrat.

Based on my knowledge of Bill Moyer I am sure he will do a fine job of giving the Rev. Wright story balance and I will look forward to seeing the interview.

I will be interested in this interview with Bill Moyers. I like Bill Moyers, I like Obama.
And I never understood what the fuss was all about. As a white male, who can remember where I was when Kennedy died in Dallas, I have no problem with what he said in church. I guess I am just an angry white male....and I am angry with our politicians who got us into this mess and sold us out to the Chinese....What the reverand said to his congregation is nothing to what BushCheney have done to our nation. This reverand Wright thing was just more swiftboating, by a democrat, for crying out loud!

Rev Wright does not concern me at least he served his country as a Marine. Clinton and her remarks on the use of a Nuke concerns me deeply. McCain flip flopping on the race issue and the economy concerns me deeply.

You can bet Sean Hannity will be playing this over and over and over and over and over and over and over again. Moyers doesn't have much cred with people. Billo did make a good point today when I tuned to his show (I do that from time to time) that talking and replaying the same ole Wright comments gets us nowhere. I do have to say despite having played it the first week of the controversy, Billo hasn't played them over and over and over again like Hannity has. I agree with Wright that there is an agenda. There is always an agenda in politics. The problem with this whole debacle is it opens up the public to begin questioning Black churches and challenge what they say. It allows many to smear Obama due to his association. Yet Falwell and Robertson can smear all day long on the right and no one seems to have a problem with it. They apply a higher standard to Obama because of his race, that is what this is really about. If Obama was white, trust me, there would be no controversy. I can guarantee that.

Tell that to John McCain, John Kerry, and Al Gore.

Have you ever listened to Hannity and ever given his comments any weight? Why are we so invested in what Hannity has to say? He isn't talking to Democratic voters. He's a clown who spews intolerance at every opportunity. If you don't think like him, you are unpatriotic. If you don't have the same religion, you are a heathen. At some point he pisses everyone off. If he has such a following, he'd have run for some office. He is an entertainer. That's all.
