A cover story coming in tomorrow's TIME magazine, on The Real Meaning of Patriotism, is timed to next week's July 4 holiday -- and the current race for the White House. In fact, it includes pieces written by both Barack Obama and John McCain, along with the main story by columnist Peter Beinart.

Obama writes, "The true genius of America [is] a faith in simple dreams, an insistence on small miracles."

Managing editor Richard Stengel sets the scene:

What we need going forward is third-way patriotism, a new patriotism that blends the faith of our fathers with, as Lincoln said, the unfinished work remaining before us ... The candidates may have different views on what makes us proud to be Americans, but both share a belief in a modern American exceptionalism: that America has a greatness of purpose that no other nation does, and that for all our achievement, our greatest tasks remain before us.

Beinart:

When it comes to patriotism, conservatives and liberals need each other, because love of country requires both affirmation and criticism. It's a good thing that Americans fly the flag on July 4. In a country as diverse as ours, patriotic symbols are a powerful balm. And if people stopped flying the flag every time the government did something they didn't like, it would become an emblem not of national unity but of political division. On the other hand, waving a flag, like holding a Bible, is supposed to be a spur to action. ... Patriotism should be proud but not blind, critical yet loving. And liberals and conservatives should agree that if patriotism entails no sacrifice, if it is all faith and no works, then something has gone wrong.

Obama:

The true genius of America [is] a faith in simple dreams, an insistence on small miracles. It's the idea that we can tuck in our children at night and know that they are fed and clothed and safe from harm; that we can say what we think, write what we think, without hearing a sudden knock on the door; that we can have an idea and start our own business without paying a bribe; that we can participate in the political process without fear of retribution, and that our votes will be counted. For me, it is the love and defense of these ideals that constitutes the true meaning of patriotism. They are ideals that do not belong to any particular party or group of people but call each of us to service and sacrifice for the sake of our common good.

McCain:

Patriotism and the citizenship it requires should motivate the conduct of public officials, but it also thrives in the communal spaces where government is absent, anywhere Americans come together to govern their lives and their communities -- in families, churches, synagogues, museums, symphonies, the Little League, the Boy Scouts, the Girl Scouts, the Salvation Army or the VFW. They are the habits and institutions that preserve democracy. They are the ways, small and large, we come together as one country, indivisible, with freedom and justice for all. They are the responsible exercise of freedom and are indispensable to the proper functioning of a democracy. Patriotism is countless acts of love, kindness and courage that have no witness or heraldry and are especially commendable because they are unrecorded.

Humility is the key to success which leads to happiness. The meek shall inherit the earth.

While for the past 65 years Americans have been trumpeting how great a Nation we are; how we are THE BEST country on Earth and like masturbatory platitudes, "the Meek", China. has quietly built itself into the inevitable and inexorable giant economic and military superpower of the 21st. Century.

Dont hear them spouting the same hyperbole that we spout in an effort to hide our failings and weaknesses?

The "Empire" is dying. that is why we do need radical change in America, if we are to stop the downward spiraland retain our hard fought for leadership in many global things.

True patriotism is supporting and defending the Constitution-- not providing legislative cover to the telecoms who illegally spied on American citizens.

Shame on both of these "patriots" for their support of the current FISA bill, but especially on Sen. Obama for his flip-flop on the Fourth Amendment.

Show your true patriotic colors this November and vote for someone besides McCain and Obama.

Doing nothing to correct failed policies while continuing to wear the flag pin, for instance, is false patriotism, like other"isms" running loose in the world, driven by ignorance and fear. Our government's fatal mistake has been its quashing of dissent, quashing of criticism. And the media has been the real traitor in this regard. The genius candidate will be the one that revives America's revolutionary, winning spirit.

Time is the least "patriotic" news magazine. It is nothing but a paper version of Fux news.

Patriotism is nothing more than an emotional response to an accident of birth.

When I hear otherwise intelligent people use the word "patriotism" without snickering or rolling their eyes, I feel queasy. Much like when sentient adults talk about god with straight faces.

The Kinks have a wonderful line in the song "Victoria" : I was born, lucky me, in the land that I love. Weren't we all? So you're proud to be an American. But if you wre born in France or Brazil or China, would you love the country of your birth any less? Ask yourself that question, and you immediately see what a foolish, empty, base emotion patriotism truly is.

Patriotism is the nice name we give to nationalism when that nationalism is our own. Patriotism serves only one purpose : to convince otherwise intelligent, normal young men (and women) to kill or die.

Patriotism necessarily sets up an us-vs-them mentality. It can lead to only one logical conclusion - we are good, and they are bad. But that's a logic built upon a false axiom, and thus worthless.

Richard Stengel writes: "America has a greatness of purpose that no other nation does." Nonsense - we are no better than any other nation, worse than many. Statements like that are evident proof of the folly of patriotism.

And yet there are those like myself, who can no longer wave the flag, not because I'm opposed to what my govt is doing, but because of those who have preempted such an act to blindly follow whatever the current resident of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave says! I don't stand for the National Anthem or the Pledge of Allegiance anymore, I don't recite the Pledge of Allegiance, and I don't place my hand over my heart. If I thought that my house wouldn't be burned down, I would be flying my most prized possession (The American Flag given to me by my former Commanding Officer when we decommissioned my ship) upside down in front of my house!!!

"The notion that a radical is one who hates his country is naïve and usually idiotic. He is, more likely, one who likes his country more than the rest of us, and is thus more disturbed than the rest of us when he sees it debauched. He is not a bad citizen turning to crime; he is a good citizen driven to despair."
--H. L. Mencken

Perhaps this has something to do with what is happening to the Constitution while everyone waves the flag. Even now, "reasonable" Senators debate the fourth amendments protections, and trade safety for liberty.

Dear American Voters, reporters, media. professionals, political parties, and presidential Nominees,

Subject: Presidential Temperament

Please talk about and "Compare And Contrast" the " Presidential Temperament" of our Presidential presumptive nominees. I will also request and plead to the nominees themselves [ Hon. Senator McCain and Obama ].

Our nation has been applying this yard and stick tor the appointments and confirmation process of our Supreme Court Justices nominees.

Our Greatgrand Nation Foundations are as under:
Family, friends, fellows, faith, funds, fun, with fairness & freedom And without fear, favor, and failure.

It will be disgrace and shameful if the nominees and media will not look into this critical and crucial aspect under current challenges circumstances within our country and all around the Globe. America wake up and the " Presidential Temperament is the key.

Yours truly,
