Robert Novak's Final Words on Plame Case? "The Hell With You!"

What's Your Reaction:

Ailing from his fourth battle with cancer last autumn, famed columnist Robert Novak -- who died today at 78 -- was interviewed at length for one of the final times by The Washingtonian's Barbara Matusow. The magazine published on its web site the full Q & A, which concluded with perhaps Novak's final published re-assessment of his role in helping to out CIA operative Valerie Plame Wilson.

It shows that near the end he had reversed his partial feelings of regret and, angered by liberal critics, went back into attack mode. Of course, two years ago, he had predicted that "unfortunately" his Plame connection would probably make the opening sentence of his obituary. This proved true in the case of the Associated Press bulletin on his death, but the Washington Post waited until the third paragraph.

Here are the passages from the Matusow interview on the CIA leak case.

Let's talk about the Valerie Plame affair, which caused you so much grief. If you had it to do over again, would you reveal who she was?

If you read my book, you find a certain ambivalence there. Journalistically, I thought it was an important story because it explained why the CIA would send Joe Wilson--a former Clinton White House aide with no track record in intelligence and no experience in Niger--on a fact-finding mission to Africa. From a personal point of view, I said in the book I probably should have ignored what I'd been told about Mrs. Wilson.

Now I'm much less ambivalent. I'd go full speed ahead because of the hateful and beastly way in which my left-wing critics in the press and Congress tried to make a political affair out of it and tried to ruin me. My response now is this: The hell with you. They didn't ruin me. I have my faith, my family, and a good life. A lot of people love me--or like me. So they failed. I would do the same thing over again because I don't think I hurt Valerie Plame whatsoever.

You saw up close what it's like to be the subject of so many news stories. Has this changed the way you view the journalistic profession?

I thought the journalistic community was terrible to me -- even members of the Gridiron Club, which is supposed to be a band of brothers and sisters. I thought one of the worst columns written on the Plame affair was by William Safire. He wrote a stupid column saying I should reveal the name of my source. He wanted to get his colleague at the New York Times, Judy Miller, off the hook with the prosecutors. He didn't know, as I knew, that my source, Richard Armitage, had long before identified himself to the FBI and the Justice Department. But my attorneys advised me to keep silent about the whole affair.

Having thrown a lot of darts throughout your career and then being on the receiving end, did you ever stop to think how your columns might have made other people feel?

No. [Laughs.] That's not my nature.

The first time I saw him, he struck me as a man embittered that time was passing him by. I saw the same thing in my own father. The facial expressions, especially in his eyes and eyebrows, were very revealing. People find it hard to believe but he was once a Democrat, in his youth, when he still saw the good in mankind.

It is an object lesson for all of us who are getting older, to not fall into that trap and let life pass us by. I hope he finds peace in the next life, the same as I hope for my old man.

Q: ...did you ever stop to think how your columns might have made other people feel?

A: No. [Laughs.] That's not my nature

And that explains why I have absolutely no sad feelings about his passing. At least the world of political "reporting" is slightly more honest today than when he was "reporting". He was a smudged spot in the history of journalism.

"because I don't think I hurt Valerie Plame whatsoever"

Mr. Novak, flights of angels. But giving up the identity of a covert agent was highly dangerous and you know it, no matter how loudly you attacked your "Liberal" attackers. Even President Bush wouldn't pardon Libby who leaked her identity to you. Even the President recognized it was wrong.

This is the Rober Novak I believed should have been prosecuted along with the entire Bush administration:

"Having thrown a lot of darts throughout your career and then being on the receiving end, did you ever stop to think how your columns might have made other people feel?'

"'No. [Laughs.] That's not my nature.'"

Indeed.

Years ago I used to watch Bob Novak on Crossfire, Capital Gang and Evans and Novak. I don't remember feeling elated by his comments or attitude but he added some enlightenment to the discussions. I never really understood why Tim Russert had him on Meet The Press so often, maybe because of Novak's controversial stances of his connections.

Novak was ahead of his time and not necessarily in a good way. He was a blatantly partisan journalist before they became the trend. More importantly, he was unashamed of his bias. Novak was a milder version of Bill O'Reilly before O'Reilly found his niche.

On the whole, I don't think partisan journalism is beneficial because despite the diversity of opinions in the marketplace, most readers, listeners and viewers aren't given or seek opposing views.

Novak laughed about the consequences of his actions. But ask Scooter Libbey, the Plames and others in Novak's journalistic carnage if they are laughing.

"Journalistically I thought ...joe wilson...a W.H. aide with no experience in intelligence..."

journalistically you would have done a little investigating on the subject matter before blurting out what you were told to say by the bush W.H.

too bad you didnt have a lee atwater "come to jesus" meeting before you hopped the down elevator.

I hate it when people people on the left scream "treason" with as much fervor as any rightwing nutbag. This is not treason. The constitution spells out what treason is very clearly: making war on the US or giving direct aid and comfort to its enemies. It's not the press's job to keep the government's secrets--it's the government's. Every government official involved in leaking the name deserved to go to jail, but Novak's activities were absolutely protected by the first amendment.

How is giving up the identity of a covert agent any different than giving up the latitude and longitude of a missle sile?

If you think about it a little, you'll get it.

Yes.. But although I deplore what was done to Valerie Plame.. they went about it in a very tricksy manner and the penalty for outting a NOC is less than 5 years and 10 Grand.. and to get even that you have to prove that it was a malicious act.. and by "Prove" I mean more than "Just Know'..

Novak was a dupe and had no idea he was outting a NOC agent.

"Novak's activities were absolutely protected by the first amendment."
***************************
Not exactly. Under the Intelligence Identities Protection Act of 1982, it is a Federal Crime (ie: a Felony) to "intentionally reveal the identity of an agent whom one knows to be in or recently in certain covert roles with a U.S. intelligence agency".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intelligence_Identities_Protection_Act

There does not seem to be a stated exception for members of the press and/or the first amendment. So, while I can agree that what Robert Novak did may not be "Treason", it seems to me that it certainly appears to have been a Federal Crime.
